View Full Version : Bribing an Army too Easy?
Playing as the English on Hard. My King is 71 and the heir is 8. I was hoping I would make it, but alas the King dies and Civil War erupts. The rebels lead by Richard Plantagenate (sp?) has about 8000 troops, while the loyalist forces have 13,000 troops. Well I had to take Richard as my new King. I basically end up with 4 of my 30 provinces and a bunch of disputes. I have a war chest of 80,000 florins. In the first year battles I defeat 7 field armies and am besieging the remnants in the castles. I start sending out my emissaries to bribe the rebel forces. Over the course of two years I bribe the entire rebel force to join my cause with the exception of 4 provinces. It costs me 50,000 florins - but the largest price I pay is 3500 for a full stack army with quality troops. It just seemed too easy and once bribed the generals were maxed out on loyalty. About half ended up with the "Weak Principles" vice. The Civil War which seemed a major obstacle was only a speed bump. I did lose a couple of province to my enemies - Crete had a loyalist revolt for the Byzantines, Tripoli was overrun by a Jihad, Aragon re-emerged, and Naples is still in rebellion. But overall things are well in hand and I have a strong King and things should be pretty much back to status quo in a couple of years.

I do feel that bribing in MTW is much easier than it was in STW. Since I started playing MTW I have never had a bribed turned down! It makes the game quite a lot easier but I'm not complaining too much http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

I have had numerous bribes turned down or renegotiated. But overall it is a pretty effective way (but pricey) to deal with enemies. In this particular situation I basically ended a civil war with little bloodshed. Maybe I should not have gotten the full war chest?

Mabye there was more corruption in medieval time?. Im no history buff, but im sure corruption and greed were almost as widespread then as now... probably far more so in fact. Anyway just my thought...

My only problem with it is that the AI doesn't seem to use the function.
One particular rebel general turned me down three times (i really wanted those horse archers!), in the end had to take the province by force as it was getting to be an embarrassment!

Today i one of my emmi's was actually murdered by a rebel general who was shocked with my proposal, or soemthing. Ver annoying, been trying to get that province for like 10 years in a peacefull way without harassing anyone.

the success and cost of the bribe is at least in part based on the loyalty of who you are bribing. rebel armies tend to be fairly easy because they really dont have much loyalty to anything but being rebel. enemy faction generals can be quite expensive and will often turn you down completly, not just try to horse trade the bribe up. and if your offer is too low under the suggested retail price of the bribe, yes, your emissary can be murdered. it's actually a pretty good system, all things considered.
