I can’t make any sense of how diplomacy works in this game. As example:
I’m late in the game as the Spanish on expert in GA mode. I own Spain, France, North Africa, The Holy Lands and a few outposts. Everybody hates me, even though I’m reducing my forces, giving up territories to create neutral buffers and sending out my diplomats.
I start to get bored of trying to inbreed my royal family and decide to rampage against the Mongols who have been at war with me since they first appeared. I conquer all their northern territories leaving them only with Syria and Arabia. One turn later, I move my forces into Antioch for the final push, but as I look at my diplomacy screen, they have reverted to neutral.
Didn’t I just mercilessly pummel them a year ago?
Then my king dies and new king ascends to the throne. A Danish Princess proposes. No other faction, with whom I have a little contact, want to be my ally. But the Danes, whose royal family was decimated by my forces in Sweden, 50 years prior, want an alliance. Two turns later he dies and I’m suddenly in charge of Denmark. I don’t know if I inherited it or the rebels joined me, but I have never occupied it before.
I then take a little time off to destroy the Italians for trying to rebuild their navy. During my stroll through the Italy, I suddenly notice I own Scotland, Crete and Rhodes (which I occupied for a single turn). How the hell did that happen? I don’t even want these provinces.
When I want to live in peace and reduce my territory, so I can maximze income and trade, everyone hates me. As soon as I start beating up on them and expanding they love me. It doesn’t make sense to me.
I wish there were a more details available on how diplomacy works in this game.
