yes, he appeared in my game : he is a rebel general in Wessex, 4 star commander, 2 acumen. I'm trying to buy is loyalty, but after two unsuccessful attempts he got the 'loyal + 100% to price" virtue. Still, I'll throw all the money I have but I'll get him.

Any other unexpected celebrities in your games?

Robin Hood? Not Robin of Locksley?

Yeah, he would be nice to have, just so you could brag with it. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

no, Robin Hood, I'm sure... Since it was very late when I stopped playing last night, I wouldn't even have figured out who this Locksley chap was... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I know, but I wouldn't have remembered yesterday night (being so tired) hence to answer your original question I'm sure they did not use the 'historically correct' name to this slightly unhistorical character

Each faction has a variety of famous people who might crop up when you train or create particular unit types on or after certain dates.

For example, if you're the English and you're training assassins sometime after 1190, you might get Guy of Gisbourne, who is a particularly deadly assassin (to quote the bizarre Dr Who story title).

very nice touch,
these details definitively spice up replays

who, right now at work, would possibly know I'm fantasysing like crazy on having Robin lead my Bizantine armies to glory across medieval Europe?

I'm playing as Italy, but I know next to nothing of their history...I could get (or already have) legendary figures and not even know about it... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

Yeah I got him quite early I think... I was almost jumping around when I saw he had 5(?) stars... So at once I sent him to kill a rank 3 general, a nice target, and he was caught... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
I could have hit myself over the head for that! I lost my best assasin.

At the moment I have king Richard I, and he is indeed a killer on the battlefield. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Also I have noticed that certain families are specialized in certain areas, I have been giving the same family titles because they all seem to have 4-5 in Acumen... Just can't remember their name.

There are twenty famous Italian heroes and villains in the game, including, to name three of the most famous, Dante, Francesco d'Assisi, and Marco Polo. Hopefully eagle-eyed Italian players will be pleased as they notice the other seventeen.

I have assasinated/burned Machiavelli about ten times now. He has not had time to write his book on warfare... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

And it seems that British family are really good at Acumen, all of them have had at least 4.

It's hard to tell which Byzantine leaders might be famous, obscure heroes and which just have the same names which had been used for four hundred years ... I guess if Digenes Akritas shows up, I'll know I got one. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Jan Ziska did, in fact, show up as a five star HRE general, late in the game.

He did not, however, appear to have one eye, and as far as his eventual blindness is concerned, there does not appear to be a "eyes poked out" V&V. To be really medieval, "tongue torn out" "hand cut off"-- they really should be in there. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Is there a Stephen McConnell in the game?

Beelzebub

I assume then, that when you train a normal unit, and he appears with 3 or more stars that he is one of these historical hero types?

Or is that sometimes just random.

In at least one game i played (i didn't look always) the initial rebel general in Portugal is king Alfonso, which is about right as Afonso Henriques was Portugal's first king. I have to check if this is consistent.

& trust me, Kraxis, the English royal family can have abysmal Acumen. I'm on my fourth king with 1 or none.

Gabriel, I did not mean the royal family, we can affect them (kill off the weak and the strong shall get strong heirs), I meant one certain line of people. Whenever I see one of them I notice they have great Acumen and fair Piety.

Mu, I think I have seen a Stephen McConnell, I can't remember how good he was though. Who is he?

I think Machiavelli might actually be the Family name for the Italian Royal family - I've got loads of Royal Knights who are Machiacellis - obviously you only get a surname when they go from heirs to generals of Royal blood

With France I had: Lord of Boulogne (history: first king of Jerusalem), Lord of Bouillon (one of the leaders of the first crusade) and d'Ypres (legendary flemish mercenary general) as generals. Haven't really paid attention to assissins. Still waiting whether van Artevelde (famous flemish rebellion leader,I found his name in the files) will pop up.

Oh yeah I've seen that one ,but thought it was just a good medieval sounding name you used because, well how many good medieval sounding names are there?

Wasn't Guy of Gisourne from the first Robin Hode(Note the use of Hode, instead of Hood because I'm a clever dick.)story.
I think he was a knight down on his luck and was forced to borrow money from Robin.

The English family I was talking about earlier was Swynford. The family Holland is not so bad either.

Have anybody else experienced a general getting a nickname such as 'the Elder'. My best general got that.

OOOH!OOOH!OOOH!

I think I might have some historic characters, but I have no idea who they are or what they did...maybe you nice kind history buffs could enlighten me...?

At the start of the game, my best general was Don Bohemond de Tankerville - superb tactician, weak principles

In the 1170s I got Don Boniface of Monferrat - 9 loyalty, 2 piety, 4 dread, 4 command, 4 acumen, skilled assaulter.

I reckon they're heroes cos as well as being outstanding off the bat, they've both got very different names to the rest of my Italian generals. But can someone help me out as to what they did ...?

Bohemond de Tankerville: Italo-Norman Crusader, Prince of Antioch

Boniface of Montferrat: commander, 4th Crusade, King of Thessalonika, died 1207

... from the comments in the source file specifying Italian heroes. Well spotted.

Lord Tagment should be your champion for taking on at least one of those three http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif .

Ran into Machiavelli in Italy also - thought he was from later on - 1500's, 1600's though: Borgia's, ect. RTW, not MTW.

Maybe just a common name.

My HRE prince Ludwig was "cracked brained" - also from later on.
