I recently tried out a few basic tactics.
Me with 1 SA and 1 YS enemy with 1YS and 1 YC
I kept beating the enemy when based on a hill, and now reversed, me with 1 YS, 1 YC enemy my former set-up He was based on small hill and I used my YC to lure away his YS so my YS could charge his archers. Now, I had lost about 5 men on the rush up to encounter, but his SA managed not only to hold ground but also rout my YS!
The heigt advantage couldn't be that high could it?
Why???

The height bonus applies but the other aspect to consider is the morale reduction you suffer from having arrows raining on you, attacking uphill which incurs a penalty in addition to his bonus and the small fact that your troops are slightly more knackered than his.

Try taking a bit more time on it, so your troops are fresher when they charge, and attacking his SA flank so that you are at least a bit further up the hill when you attack, therefore incurring less of an uphill penalty.

The hieght advantage is always a very important factor my friend!...A good high Position Gives YoU a bonus in ThE moral of your MeN, This Bonus is ThE difference between your MeN AnD your Enemy... BuT u CaN UsE it against your enemy ToO...many think that they ArE safe in a High HILL, well in the books of Sunt Tzu its named the FLOW, its says that u dont have to mantain a Formation but that u have to move your troops accord to the Terrain. Like a river goes with the way!... so if one enemy is on a hill u must try to go higher as him!... use the flanks ... if ur troops atack from Down use a FALSE FRONT...send units in a line... to contain the atack of the defenders... then send to the flanks the res of army but try to get higher as him!...
I hope it can help you... may be i ll post a new reply later with graphics so u can look it!...
have nice day...

I think your YS routed because you peeled your YC from the formation (the YC was your Teisho, right?). That's a big morale hit.

I attack up hill all the time, and I think you could win by simply marching your YS in loose formation with the YC following to one side (the side that his YS are not on). Group them and click on a point behind the enemy lines. What you are looking for is a match up between your YC and his SA. Your YS should look to attack his YS.

You have to stay flexible. Most likely the SA will skirmish up the hill as you approach, and his YS will charge through them towards your YC. Simply use the speed of your YC to avoid his YS, while your YS run full-speed into the flank of his YS. Now you can move your YC into an attack position against his SA. It will be bloody, but you will win.

You can use a difrent tactic-
send the YS at his YS and flank with the YC.
the hieght is very important,i killed a Samurai army that had more man and more honor, with a smaller YA army.
it was very hard and i almost lost, but the large hill that i defended from, won the battel.

Celtibero, I would suggest using correct capitalization instead of your confusing hashes. :P

Smisker... Keep in mind that Archers are samurai, too. As you may recall from the tutorial, given the height advantage they can usually take on Yari and win, all else being equal. They are suitable for stopping enemy charges and deal handily with ashigaru, too.

With their multiple uses they are one of the most versatile units.
