View Full Version : Changing horse midgame?
Hello fellow MTW-players
I have a couple of questions for you who are experienced with modding this beatiful game:
- Is it possible to change nations by modding the savefile? Let's say I start the game as England and have fun conquering France and the Holy Lands. After 100 turns it gets a bit boring as it gets too easy. You all know what I am talking about. All of a sudden, the Aragonese reappear in Navarre with a host of crossbowmen and feudal sergeants. In order to create a real challenge for ourselves, is it possible to edit the savefile to play as the Aragonese?
- I am currently playing Poland in a XL High campaign. I see the English, French and Danes are buildsing crusades, but I can't built a chapter house. It is now roughly 1250. How can I mod it so that my little Poland can build chapter houses?

Hello Norkus,
What you want for the first thing is, I believe, the -ian fix. You add -ian to the end of your MTW exe. This allows you to switch between factions at any time during a campaign, by pressing the appropriate key on your keyboard. You'll want to do a search for -ian (also known as debug mode, I think?) for the details, as it's been awhile since I've done that. Or maybe someone will come by who knows better than me.
Adding a chapter house is fairly easy, but it's best if you have Gnome Editor. Fire up Gnome, load up Crusaders Build_Prod.txt and find the Chapter House entry, then add Poland to the list of factions that can build it. You may need to do some additional editing, perhaps in the Unit_Prod.txt (?) to add Poland to the list of factions that can actually train a Crusade as well -- no point in having a Chapter House if you can't build a Crusade!
Though these things are fairly easy to do, make sure you make copies and back up your MTW before fiddling around, as a single typo can make your game unplayable!

I used to do this quite a lot but not much now. I'd start by building up a weak faction that usually gets wiped out then at the start of the early period I'd switched to an underdog. Once I remember building a very strong Seljuk empire then left it to the AI and went to play as the Danes. When I next checked what they were doing they had well over two thirds of the map, then bang, their whole empire fell to pieces.
Excellent replies gentlemen. I will take a look at the Gnome Editor and see if I can find more on the -ian files.

-ian is added as a command line argument when running the game. Just edit the target of your desktop link e.g.
"C:\Where you installed MTW\Medieival_TW.exe" -ian
where can i get the Gnome editor?
cheers
Go to the org and look through the download files. I can't tell you the exact link because I'm at work and the .org is blocked by my company's content control software. (yes believe it or not I can still get to the forum but not the site!)

out of curiosity, does something similar exist for RTW and M2TW. I can't belive I played MTW without knowing about this :beam:

The best game for that is Europa Universalis though. Save, resign, switch factions, continue. :charge:

I do love EU3, but I meant does a similar program exist for Medieval 2? If yes, which is what I gather from your responses, where would I find such a thing

In Medieval and Rome you use a cheat to switch factions (forgot what cheats though). In MiNO I don't know.
