View Full Version : Creative Assembly WTF?
I'm playing as the Germans on Hard. Early in the game I took Flanders and Champagne from the French then on the next turned asked for a ceasfire from them and they accepted. (Imagine that, the French surrendering quickly then making peace with the guys that just took their provinces. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif ) Well about a hundred years later the French decide to try to retake Flanders. Well I wiped them out easily (what a shock). The next turn the English attack across the channel into flanders and I beat them also. Well now I'm at war with the French and English so I decide to get rid of the French once and for all(Someone should have done this long ago. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif ). I attack a few French provinces and get warned by the Pope. Well now my choices are either lift the sieges or be excomminicated. I end up being excommunicated a few turns later and now am at war with EVERYONE.
Why is it that I am the one that gets excommunicated when the French and English both started the wars with me?

The Pope keeps track of how much aggression each Catholic faction has shown towards other Catholic factions, and issues warnings and excommunications accordingly. He isn't that interested in who started it, only in who's done the most attacking. Which in this instance sounds like it was you, since you attacked a few provinces as opposed to the one they attacked, and it sounds like you didn't raise your sieges.
Technically (although not actually considered by the game :) you were also the original aggressor in taking French-owned Flanders.
Fortunately, there are several ways of responding to excommunication... which are mentioned elsewhere on this forum :)

And, as in real life, the Pope sometimes just likes other people more than you. A bit of randomness makes the game more enjoyable.

Excommunication also seems to be relative to the amount of land you control.
In the game I'm playing at the moment (I'm English) the Germans (who held much more land than me attacked Flanders and another couple of provinces I held in Europe... I beat them back and then countered - I took about four or five provinces before the pope even gave me a warning.

I somehow don't belive this. I've had games where I'm the HRE, the French attack and take Burgundy, I retake it and I get the warning from the pope. Then when two years are up I get excommunitcated for retaking my province.
And set things straight I'd not had a single battle up to that point yet. I had been concentrating on trade and had thought that my alliances meant something.
Guess they don't.
