What about all those backrooms? I can see they are there but I can't get in. Therefore:
1. What's going on in there!?
2. What sinister rites do I have to submit myself to to be initiated and gain access? Does it require secret handshakes or secret mouse pointer movements respectively?

Seriously, I think you just have to ask Tosa or a moderator for access.

Actually you just need to join the backroom group using your UserCP

Go to your User CP, in the left column, go to miscelleanous and click on "Group memberships".

You'll get to this screen (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/profile.php?do=editusergroups)

Choose to join the Backroom group.

If this doesn't work out, contact TosaInu or Ser Clegane.
