Only in deployment phase and you can't plant them everywhere. There will be an icon at the special ability section that looks like stakes and you can plant them.
Once you did, best not to move your longbows or you have to re-set them.

Most notably you cannot put the stakes on roads or streets (dirt or brick)

You cam plant stakes on dirt roads but not on paved roads. And you can plant them in cities and castles.

If you've not used stakes before make sure that you don't put your own horses through them, or be prepared to use very bad words when they all die.

Incidentally - do stakes work on Camels? I'd like to see a screencap of that.

Yes interestingly you can. Outside of cities you cannot deploy them on roads, but within cities you can. :inquisitive: The most obvious use of it to block the gate, very useful vs mongols.

AFAIK they do not work vs eles.

Stakes do work on camels, stakes do not work on elephants.

1) You can plant stakes in cities mainly, as i have tried, in front of the gate very usefully when fighting factions with much use of cavalry
2) The only units i've seen with this ability are Longbowmen(all types), Lithuanian Archers(Polish can recruit this guys), and Janisary archers(long shot guess Turkey :laugh4: :laugh4: )

This comes to ->
3) Poles fight Russians lots and lots of cavalery both missile and melee
Turks fight Mongols and Timurids if you are the lucky one that has too:))
English I guess all the cavalery in France plus those hundreds of years of archery tradition.

The stakes are like so imba that having to units of janisary archers when mongols invade (mongols like to find a good city for there new homeland, they went for Antioch in my game and attacked it in force with 3 full stacks with generals and that sort) is like having a combine for harvesting....they rush the gate, crack it open with a ram, then rush into the stakes ending up dead...the stakes have crazy 90% kill rate...from a full stack of cavalery only 4 or at best 6 units survive but not for long....Janisary Heavy Infantry(JHI) will make short work of them.

Stakes are indeed cheese against the broken AI. Against a human player, they are near useless since you can easily circumvent the stakes (unless they are smart and manage to deploy a circular/chokepoint setup)

I've played a battle with a friend we both know the tricks of the game so he choose France and me Turkey...we deployed and i deliberately left a flank subguarded with only missile troops at best...the terrain was grassy so between the flowers he didn't spot the stakes, needless to say he charged head on into the stacks with 4 units of lancers and before they hit he was all cocky saying "Ce te crap mah fraiere!!!" synonym phrase "I'M OPENING A FRESH CAN OF WHUPASS ON YOU" and when he got all massacred he was like WTF :furious3: :furious3: ??? :wall: :skull: .

Plus more units of archers => a circle of spikes :2thumbsup:
