View Full Version : The Making of Mitt Romney

Seeing as my favorite presidential candidate in my lifetime up to this point pulled second place in last nights election, I have become concerned that most people only know what they hear about him on TV.
The Boston Globe wrote an interesting, minimally biased biography about him last year. (http://www.boston.com/news/politics/2008/specials/romney/)
To let you know why I love the guy so much:
-My politics are clearly aligned with his: Smaller Federal government, lower taxes, proud and able military. Also, he is a relative traditionalist with positive progressive tendencies; overturning of the Roe v Wade debacle, Health care plans that don't annihilate the current system and still allow for personal responsibility,
-He is a teetotaler, just like my father - No drinking, smoking or cursing (well 95% of the time)
-He really seems to be proud of his family and his families' history. He doesn't have the flippant tendencies that I see in so many other people around me and candidates for that matter regarding their distancing themselves from the core beliefs of their fore bearers for pure political gain.
-He is an established business man that doesn't show the tell-tale signs of greed and corruption. His salary and severance pay from the winter Olympics were donated to charity - He never accepted a salary as governor of MA.
-He is the turnaround King of this election.
-He is incredibly quick witted and knowledgeable about what ales us as a country.
-He is the only candidate that gets the G.O.P. balance right. (except for the southern drawl it seems).
-He reminds me in nearly all ways of my father - who I admire more than anyone that I have ever met.
Combine the strengths of all of the other candidates and you get one Mitt Romney. Except for the perception of authenticity among some. Just remember - the rest of the candidates are career politicians too.
Just to let you know why I love this guy. I know some of you will barf from all the attention I've been giving Romney, but I honestly believe in him.
I think that he is more genuine than is politically advantageous. It seems that most voters have become such cynics that they need a candidate who has major personal problems; candidates who cheat, swear, drink and "understand" modern life. There is an alternative. My family doesn't cheat, swear, drink or smoke either. We've often been called corny, traditional, nerdy, "7th heaven". But I challenge you to find a more politically apt, tight-knit large family, who has been as financially successful, with a better grasp of global issues.
Look no further.
I welcome everyone to start a thread about their favorite candidates.
Brrrr he is the kind of guy that has an entire catholic boy-choir in his porn-dungeon. You guys have a president factory somewhere dear god what a Ken. Don't know anything about his politics but he has a mouth for a rubber ball.

That is what I'm talking about. Goodness is only a mask. Under ever good person is a deep dark secret Nazi pedophile.
That is a loss of hope.

Sounds like he fits your view of the world and your family situation, and I can understand why you would want to vote for him. But can you understand that he simply does not represent the feelings of many Americans, who go for other candidates with whom they can identify?

Not saying that but too much of everything is suspect but that boy's butt is just too cheeky.

Of course I can. There is, however, the element that doubts the idea that people can seem like and actually BE good people.
The family thing for me is a big selling point. To others, they might realize that his policies themselves are spot on for us. Either way - this guy is a big deal in the G.O.P., whether people see it at this point in the campaign or not. I'm nto discouraged. Mitt, so far in the 3 first states, carries the most widespread appeal to Republicans. In Wyoming, McCain and Huckabee barely registered, even after Iowa. In Iowa, Huckabee did very well and McCain barely registered. In NH, McCain did pretty well and Huckabee barely registered.
Who has registered consistently so far?
2nd in Iowa, 1st in Wyoming, 2nd in NH
I just hope that he can pull the Reagan coalition closer together and appeal to southerners like Reagan and Bush Senior did.

Most of the more substantial doubts I've seen about Romney haven't been about his squeaky-clean style, but about a worrying tendency to change his public views quite frequently as the public opinion changes. That, coupled with his presentation, make some wonder about his sincerity.

I think that it is clear that he is a Republican who has shared their ideas on limited government for a long time and so had his father.
I am a strong pro-lifer as many may have noticed. All a candidate needs to do is recognize the absurdity of Roe v. Wade for me to back them at this stage. They can even believe in abortion, as long as they want to come to a democratic conclusion about it at either the state or Federal level. This isn't a tall order - it is reasonable and responsible. Even the pro-abortion uber-attorney Alan Dershowitz (http://www.affbrainwash.com/archives/020500.php) (who I absolutely respect) believes that the verdict was a sham. Romney goes one beyond this and says that he would eventually like to see the practice end because he believes it is a destruction of life. He is a smart guy. If he recognizes anything it is that you can change, but only change once. if you change, then change back, that is a Flip (change) Flop (change back).
I am confident in both his personal resolve on the issue. If that fails, I am confident in his political sense on the matter.

Oh common to back up medical marrijuna is simply not possible, medical industry needs to test and test and test to avoid claims what if he even thinks about allowing it and something happens instant death. Wheelchair yeah terrible must suck but sucks even more to exploit how much it sucks.

Wheelchair yeah terrible must suck but sucks even more to exploit how much it sucks. That's a classic political ambush. I actually give him credit for sticking to his guns when faced with the "kid in wheelchair" attack. Of course, his answer would've been better had he added, "No, I won't arrest you." to his answer. Afterall, whatever his position, the president doesn't personally go out and arrest anyone. Personally, I don't see anything "scumbag" about his response.

I was discussing our current crop of duds who want to be president with a friend today, who asked me if, in light of how uninspiring the current contenders are, would I consider voting Bush again if I was able to.... I actually had to think about it... you have no idea how depressing a thought that is. :sweatdrop:

Exactly.
Yeah that doesn't really forward conversation, but he never comes across as a guy you can trust in debates and that's a far better indicator of character in my opinion than how "perfect" his family life may appear.

I can call elections pretty well, but I'm usually wrong with U.S. politics.
It is like we have no sense whatsoever.
In Spain, I called Zapatero over Aznar. In Germany, I called Merkel over Schroeder. In Italy, I called Prodi over Burlusconi. In France, I called Sarkozy over Royal. In the U.K., despite the strong history of new Labour, I think it's a toss up in the next election between the Tories and Brown (Brown is a turd). Hell, in Taiwan I even called Chen Shui Bien over Lien Chan. I didn't care enough about Poland to call Tusk over Kaczynski.
In 2004, I called Kerry. I was so surprised that Bush won the popular vote. When his father lost, I didn't see that coming either. On the brightside, I did see Dole losing though.
Americans are TV junkie fools in general. They pick loser and fossils candidates. No intelligent group is happy after most elections. Just the fools who don't actually know what they care about.
I would have supported this moreman...
