I'm probably missing something, but I've just had a battle where I was defending on a flat battlefields.

I had two catapult deployed which did some sterling work before the enemy arrived, but once the melee began, they kept firing at enemy units, but ended up killing whole ranks of my troops in the process.

I tried telling them to fire at a different unit and turned off the fire at will option, but they still wouldn't bloody stop!

Is there something I've missed?

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, for he today that sheds his blood with me, shall be my brother be he ne're so vile, this day shall gentle his condition. And Gentlemen in England, now a bed,
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here and hold their Manhoods cheap, whilst any speaks that fought with us upon Saint Crispines day.

Had the same problem, usually when ive set the cats on auto fire. Its all fun and games until you start gettin friendly fire and then the psychos wont stop firing even when i take em of auto!

If you desided on which enemy unit they should shoot at and disabled autofire and then you dont want them to shoot anymore. Click on halt.

You shouldnt use them while your forces are in melee anyways

What is it that makes a complete stranger dive into an icy river to save a solid gold baby? Maybe we'll never know.

I have had the same problem, and the halt key does not work after taking the engine off fire at will since sometimes it is not lit up, either on the overhead or pop up panel.

The solution has been to redirect their fire at a specific target that is not close to friendlies, or withdraw/route them if the battle is basically won. I haven't noticed if the halt key lights up after redirecting their fire at a specific target, but that might also be a work around.

Artillery adds dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl.

take off fire-at-will

then hit backspace to stop them from firing... works for me all the time

on defensive I also make my siege units rout after theyve done thier part in the battle.. after the enemy creeps up into melee .. I rout my siege weapons.. and bring in cavalry to run down the enemy after theyve routed
