View Full Version : Compass?!?
Cant seem to upgrade my dockyard to shipbuilders guild the year is 1250+ compass has been discovered and I have a fortress. Playing the english seems like a bug no other factions seem to have advanced ships either kinda like the compass needs re-inventing or something. Anyone seen this or can help me please?
I've heard many people asking about compass. What is it? I don't recall that I see the event of the invention of compass somewhere during the game. Or I might have missed the announcement. Or it could be for a specific faction only (Byzantine, Italy). Or it could happen only if you start the campaign at later period (after the invention of compass/gun powder and the game still waiting for the even to be triggered (bug?).
Anyway, I start building ships like this:
Port -> Keep -> Shipwright (Barque, Dhow, Dromon, Galley, Longboat)
-> Castle -> Dockyard (Baggala, Caravel, Firegalley)
-> Gun powder event in 1260/or may require compass event for Byzantine and Italy
-> Citadel -> Shipbuilders Guild (War Galley)
-> Cannon Foundry (Boom, Cog)
-> Fortress -> Master Shipbuilder (Gun Galley)
-> Master Foundry (Carrack).
I only play as Danish and Spanish so I don't know the requirement for other factions.

I got the compass event as the Egyptians around 1175 AD (not sure but I know it was before 1200). I remember reading in the concept art book (you get this if you buy MTW from Best Buy) that the Europeans were exposed to Arabic learning through the crusades, so maybe you need to crusade to get this as a European faction?
It might just be a bug i got because im using a mod to play a minor faction, but playing as the sicilians, I discovered the compass around 1150ish, but its now the 1190s and i still cant build the level 3 shipyard, the one that the compass is meant to unlock, & allow the northern med nations to get wargalleys. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
Might have to look at the build file if i get a minute, that should be moddable.
Thats if it is a bug at all, maybe wargalleys use cannon? dunno cos i cant build em yet, havent had gunpowder.

Compass is invented around 1169. Shipbuilder's guild needs cannon foundry.
thx for all the replies. It needs a cannon foundry? that must be why god knows how you found that out the tech trees I have dont mention that. So I guess that rules out decent ships until well after gunpowder is discovered.

Compass is invented around 1169? I play as English, it's now 1231 and I still can't get compass! Do I need to build anything to get compasss? I can't attack Ireland without level 3 shipyard!!!!

I missed that at first. You only need 2 ships to attack Ireland from Wessex. One in the English Channel and the other in the small strip of water between Ireland and England proper. Only hostile ships form a blockade.
Funny - the tech-tree that came with the game shows the requirements clearly...

Danes, 1280(from an early game), compass invented since 1 century, forteress & foundry, till no level 3 shipyard available. Arrrrrrrrrrggggggh!
And YES I've everything.

how is the compass attained? i am almost to 1260 & the compass has yet to be seen. the almoreds got it very quickly, but i cant seem to get it. i have a fortress, & many provinces with ports & dock yards. im playing as the egyptians. i have almost conquered the entire map, but no compass.

I myself would like to know why in god's name don't i have the compass as the germans...it's about 1250?!
Hi folks,
The important boundaries are not the Compass Rose or Gunpowder events but the era changes. Compass Rose happens in Early but you can't build the higher-level shipyard/units until High starts (1205). Similarly Gunpowder appears in High but the shipbuilder's guild isn't available until Late (13?? - I so seldom get that far ~;) ).
It's a bit odd that you can build all the prereqs in one era but have to wait til the next to build the actual units. For caravels, for instance, you can build the actual building (shipbuilder? I forget) after the compass in 1169 but have to wait until 1205 before you can actually build the ships...
Cheers,
Ulair

What I would like to know is when exactly the compass is "discovered" in the late period...I've noticed it's a bit different in each time era. also with the gunpowder. It seems there might be a bug with the compass discovery.

I believe the compass is "discovered" towards the end of Early - I never noted the date because it doesn't really matter - you can't build the deep water ships until High starts (1205). However, you can build the first shipyard upgrade any time during early so when High starts you can immediately queue deep water ships.

I have also noticed that the time of discoveries varies greatly. This has lead me to think that maybe the time of discoveries depends partly on the overall technology level of factions. But this is speculation, I have no evidence.
