View Full Version : Need Help! Multilingual Players Needed!!!

The Daimyo

I need to enlist the help of any of you regulars that know more than one language. Presently we need people that can translate in the following languages:

Spanish
German
Korean
Chinese
Japanese
Dutch
Swedish
Portugese (Brazillian)

This will be for the conversion/translation of many of the currently available Tools and Mod making documents available, as well as for the multi-lingual (localized) versions of the STW Map Packs - versions 1.13 and so forth.
Also, Sonic Nights and myself were hoping to promote some joint efforts on behalf of the people that only speak their native language, so that this game would be more accessable to them, and so that we can promote it beyond the current scope. (i.e. English and Italian language sites in the mix presently - we should be covering all versions of Shogun that were produced or will be produced)
We'd like to put together some multilingual talent for these purposes.
Anyone with said ability is seriously encouraged to post up some words and interest on the matter here or email me or Sonic Nights - he can be reached at Shogun Zone.

Thanks!

I can translate Chinese.
BTW, Daimyo, at bottom of the org home page link section, if you scroll down there are links to two Chinese sites. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for your offer Tenchi, it will be much appreciated!
Yes I know of some of these other sites, but do they know of all of us? Another thing, one of the big reasons for this gathering is that we'd like to see the maps and tools made available for all the versions of STW.
Currently we're very exclusive in our distribution methods, and our changing of these things is needed in order to get the most out of what's available.

Many of the players I see online can't/won't get the maps and such because they don't understand how things work, or because the installations and software used are all in English.
With your help, and that of others, we'll soon see a rebirth of interest in all things related to Shogun.

Daimyo,

I know some German.
However, I recommend that you look at the various clans. Several are Lang. based.

I know the Elites are German
The Celtibros are Spanish
And I know we have Dutch, Danish, and Sweedish players within the community.

Hallo TheDaimyo,

Ik ben Nederlander. Ik geloof niet dat het veel zin heeft om een Nederlandse vertaling te maken omdat Nederlanders goed overweg kunnen met Engels (er zijn uitzonderingen natuurlijk).

Oh... err, sorry TheDaimyo... I said that I was Dutch and that many Dutch people can handle English text. But I will of course help with translating.

About the maps. It's the same procedure again and again: copy the jjm and tga files to the battle/maps folder.
My proposal is to make a multilingual installation 'guide' and upload it in the different mapsections.

It would be useful to translate the historical text (single player scenarios).
I'am not sure how spanish effects the adf and bdf files, but the Japanese version for example can't handle the files as we've made them now. So the bdf and adf might need to be translated too.

1.13 looks good.

This is a very nice idea, Daimyo-sama. There certainly isn't an abundance of mods (for any game) in other languages than English, but translating the independently-made map packs and tools to *all* the languages STW supports would be an undertaking unequalled in history!

I could do a Finnish translation, but... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif On a more serious note, one problem about this arrangement is the distribution of the map packs etc. to places where the native-language-only-speakers can find them. Thus, the translators might also want to become marketing personnel... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

(Edit: a French translation is missing from your list, but I assume you'll want to have one. All the French people seem to have vanished from the Org... Maybe there are still some left at the Community Forum.)

I know a little redneck -- although I do not consider myself conversational in it. Learned it while I was in the bush in Alabama completing recon missions for the Shogun's secret Shinobi service...

Awesome! Seems like we have most of this covered, and now we just need a few representatives for the Korean and Japanese versions of things. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Sonic Nights is going to cover the Italian and French end, he's capable with both of those.
Haven't heard from anyone who speaks Portugese yet though...

There's a lot that can be done with a group of folks like yourselves, and as Anssi says, it's quite a big deal and it most likely will be percieved as such.
The work's gonna be easy for the translators, and yes it may require that we, who do it, try and make an effort on our own to get the word out to everyone.
One of the other ideas that Sonic and I discussed was the need for news sites in the other languages as well. Not just Clan sites.

Now, I don't think it would be logical to do up a bunch of sites, but it might be very interesting if we who have the big sites already could make an effort to offer up some/all of our content and the latest news in those other languages.
That would be more of an ongoing thing that might require that anyone who wanted to do it would be available for at least an hour or two each week so that they could translate the week's news and then submit it to the webmasters so that they could publish it on their sites.
Me personally, I wouldn't mind spending the extra time and effort to do this at all.
The Org, PlanetTotalWar, and ShogunZone are prime candidates for this, and if any of the other sites wanted to do it as well, it would be even better!
What do you all think, so far?

Uh... I'd recommend a single site that is multilingual. Then the different translators you sign up can do their thing on the mere content translations. But, if you dont have a multilingual content management system already in place... it may prove too expensive for the purposes of this endeavor... still, if you want to buy one, I know a company that sells such a thing...

I can translate Spanish and German

Most of the translating work is already being done within national/language clans.

The Celtiberos Clan has some installation procedures translated into spanish, I can send them to you at any time.

The maps install well, but havo no info at all, since these texts are in the
C:\Archivos de programa\Total War\Shogun - Total War\loc\Spanish\maps.txt and \historical.txt files

Once 1.13 is out, we will have to translate a lot until the localized versions are released. Localized 1.12 took almost 2 months !!

I recommend the .com site should open different forums for each language.

BTW, I had to install the english 1.12 cos the spanish one took so long to be released, the effect was a spanglish game, but it worked pretty well. many fellow clan members still have it.

After installing the spanish patch i noticed some differences in gameplay, graphics and, most important, new features, like a Latency-meter in the battlefield screen, that shows if some of the players has dropped or if he has good or bad lat.

It would be good to compare the different versions, since they seem to be slightly different in many aspects.

What's all this multi-lingual stuff? . . Being from Kentucky, I know what the hillbilly definition of multi-lingual is . . . It's when you have two sweet young things spit-shining your barrel at the same time!! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif I also dated a girl one time who was bi-lingual . . everytime I mentioned sex she said "BYE"!! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif I feel like the Rodney Dangerfield of Shogun . . "I tell ya I don't get no respect!" LOL Well that's all fer now, gotta take off these new fangled things called shoes I just started wearing yesterday . . . they told me i needed to shine my shoes, but when I poured the moonshine on em from my big clay jug, it ate a hole right thru em. Oh well, I got the family reunion comin up and I want to look my best, cause I might meet the girl of my dreams!!! LOL Have fun

I know Chinese (studied it academically).

If I drink enough beers, I know German and most of the Indo-European languages as well ("Henineken please", "Achtung - beer!")

And if I am really splashed, I begin to understand what women are really talking about.

I can, just as Anssi-sama, translate a text in finnish.

And, with a little more time (with the help of my friend), try a japanese translation.

It's quite interesting to see the mix of people around the world. It gives a sense of perspective to realise that most people here are from absolutely opposite sides of the world.
How curious and utterly bizzare.

The Daimyo

Alrighty then! That should cover every version that we need to make translations for. All of you who are seriously interested - please download the STW MapPack version 1.13 or version 1.14 (for non-English Operating Systems if you have one) and have a run through of all that is included in that ( goto my site - http://www.planettotalwar.com ). I will make a new Readme.txt file for the localized versions, and email it to those of you that are going to do this. You can then add your names and other pertinent information about your functions with this into it when you translate the text.

Then after you translate the Readme.txt files into the languages that you are capable with, we will need to translate the text in the "historical.txt" files so that it is readable/understandable in your language or the 2nd/3rd languagues that you speak.

I would appreciate it if Kraellin and/or Tosa Inu could head up this part and make sure to let us all know if there is anything that we need to do different - or if it's all good as it is. As far as I know - the programming syntax and comments should all stay the same, but the descriptions can all be rewritten in the language you are doing it for.
Once that is done, verbatim, then you can save it in the appropriate "loc\***" folder that contains the original "historical.txt" file for your version's language. You should back up your original before pasting the translated new one from the Map Pack into it. Test it out, and make sure that the Historical Battles work as they are intended and that you see the text as it was intended.
Once this is done - then we'll move on to step 2 - making the localized versions distributable.

Then, from there on out, those of you that want to keep on with it, we'll move on to doing the Map Tools, Map Editor FAQs, and more!

Now, along with this, there was the idea of doing some sections at my site, and possibly others - where the news and other information would be given in several different languages. This is another project but of a different nature. I would like to recieve emails from those of you that would like to start this with me and the other sites that may want to do this.

You can email me here:
thedaimyo@planettotalwar.com
If you are serious about doing any of this.

I would also like to recieve emails from those that will definitly be translating the map packs and the other tools and documents. Just tell me who you are and how I can reach you. Let me know what languages you will be able to translate these into - and let me know if you want to be a part of the site projects.

There is enough room in this for a lot of people, I'm not going to limit it at all. I do expect that those who will participate will follow through with whatever they take upon themselves to do. If you can't do something or can't finish - I'd appreciate it if there were others to help out who we can all trust. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I'll be around most of today and tomorrow so please do email me and I'll make sure to send you the information you'll need to get started on this project!

Thank You All!!!
