A new action oriented MMO...
Based in the Caribbean with 5 factions (British, French, Dutch, Spanish and Pirate)...
You create a character with in a faction (Naval Officier, Privateer or Free-Trader for the national ones, not sure about Pirate)...
You are the captain of a ship/boat... The gameplay is based in public ports, a public ocean and instances of open water (bay's usually) or land locations for missions... This can be individual or require groups of players...
The land based mission stuff is okay and the Ports are fun in a cliched "arrr pirates" kind of way...
The real fun is in the ship sailing and combat... They have gone to great lengths to add an element of realisim to this... It is a real step forward from the circling ships of Pirates...
The basic point of the game is to get go up leaves and acquire better ships to command...
Apparantly most of the objects in game will be made by players, you will be be able to buy them or even steal them as pirates (and possibly privateers)...
Still learning the details but fun so far...
I am in the pre-launch party (got my copy from D2D, 5gb download so be warned)... Actual launch is this coming Monday...

Not exactly new. The game has been in the making for years and we (the pirate scum) had interest upon the very announcement. Some old Sea Dogs guilds (FIST) planted themselves over there years ago.
I'm not into pay-per-play thingie though.

A norwegian pirate i be ARRRRRRR
anyways let me explain some stuff, pirates have it easier because of their ability to "Take Command" aka steal ships (has a cooldown of 2 hours, so you gotta be make sure you got the hang of the game before you start stealing other ships).
Keep in mind captured ships have only 1 durability, once they are sunk they are gone for good, manufactured ships have more and once sunk you could have another ship waiting at your dock, so keep that in mind and don't put the best outfittings on a captured ship if you're not sure of your abilities.
Nationals have it tougher, but naturally they are better than pirates at the end game, so let me explain their workings since they are much more complex:
Naval Officer: For the first 45 levels aka 90% of the "grinding" to end game, they take the role of a support class (defensive enhancements for the group), and a meatshield, they commandeer warships (more on ship types later) and can "capture" ships that is unlike pirates, they capture the ships for the state, and in return get a commendation for their services, much like tokens getting alot of commendations can net you a new ship, but you really need to rely on the economy and support of freetraders for a new ship. At the end game Naval Officers have access to Ships of the Line, only available to them (pirates can get these if they successfully board one in pvp, which is easily said than done), unlike other ships, the Ship of the Line has more than a gun deck, it also has a middle deck, and upper deck, their guns are much heavier and can shred scout ships to bits with only one broadside.
Privateer: basically the national copy of a pirate, they are good in scout ships and also support other nationals with offensive enhancements and are very good at damaging ships and general naval skirmishing tactics, screening, nagging, and whatever stuff to distract rival nationals while naval officers do their work. Unlike pirates they cannot commandeer captured ships, but can get commendations when you capture them for the state.
Freetrader: This class is pretty unique in that its pretty terrible at the start, and has a horrible experience but with one difference, they have economic skills that allow them to get discounts at rival ports, as well as flood rival ports with cheap products to increase unrest, also they can hire officers at a naval academy to increase their ships effectiveness which compensates for their lack of combat capability. Freetraders also get 'some' Merchantships exclusive to them, these along with Ships of the Line are the only ships that have more than a gundeck, and they are very good at support roles in combat situations (primarily pvp, never dismiss a merchantman galleon as they are pretty tough).
Pirate: Only available to the Brethern of the Coast pirate "nation", led by william the kid, they are essentially a hybrid class that can fit in any role, and have skills that can orient them to whatever the player desires but not as effectively as national classes, so basically a good at all master of none type of class. Primarily pirates should be in scout ships as they are the best for boarding action, however pirates can get refits (basically ships that are overloaded with cannons, for an example Edward Teachs "Queen Ann's Revenge" which is a 20 gun ship that was redesigned to have 42 guns) and can commandeer merchantman and warship types as well. Pirates cannot access Ships of the Line or Merchantman galleons, but they can capture them in pvp (player versus player) if they are skilled enough (its doable but very very difficult) these ships also suffer from having 1 durability so if its sunk its gone for good, and your pvp flag is enabled when your commandeering these "invalid" ships, so anyone can attack you on the open sea if you're not properly escorted.
Onto ship types, essentially there are 3 ship types in the game they are:
Warship: Big, tough ship, with many cannons, but suffer from bad acceleration and turn rates, however their size and weight make them faster than scout ships though you'll have to deal with acceleration if you'll ever catch a scout ship with these (turning cripples your acceleration which means your top speed gets crippled as well). The Ship of the Line are considered warships. As well as pirate refits that overload scout ships with cannons are considered warships as well. In the early game, Frigates and Corvettes, along with Brigs, Packet-Boats, Ketchs, Snows and whatnot are also considered warships. In the end game you have "Rates", Fourth Rates lack an upper deck, Third Rates are like fourth rates but with better statistics overall, Second Rates have an upper deck and have more cannons while First rates are the only ships with 48 pound cannons. Generally any ship that has 64 and more guns are considered ships of the line (all the way up to 104 guns)
Scout Ship: Not as tough as warships, but they have excellent acceleration and turn rates, that means they can and will annihilate a warship 1 on 1 because of their excellent manueverability. at the early game ships like the sloop, schooner, xebec and any ship with lateen sails are considered scout ships, at the end game frigates become scoutships(they will also look more like warships but still retain their maneuverability). Usually any ship that doesn't exceed 52 guns are scoutships.
Merchantman: These ships have horrible maneuverability overall and not very good top speeds, but they are well armored and decently gunned, the only difference is they have HUGE AMOUNTS OF SPACE, so if you're a free trader and need to haul stuff use these to haul produce to your target destination for better profits. Ships like Snows, Flutes, Galleons and Indiaman are merchantships, Galleons being the best and the most powerful of these at end game. Merchantman ships can have up to 80 or 90 guns, and are very comparable to ships of the line end game.
Ok i'm tired of typing, thats a pretty wordy post, but there you have it.
I will explain the economy some other time because thats a whole different layer of the game that needs explaining.

That about sums up my sentiments as well, it's too bad too.
I'm curious though, what if after your free trial period ends and you decide not to pay? How many features of the game get locked or does it not work at all?
We at piratesahoy were pretty hyped about that game, too, but after the prerelease started and the beta-testers could speak openly, it became quite clear that it wasn´t the game we all hoped for. Oh well, back to modding and playing PotC...

I normally avoid the MMO's like the plague but I had just been on a cruise, was reading the Under the Black Flag and had loaded Port Royale 2 and Pirates back on my PC and then this popped up...
And the promise of a deeper ship combat experience drew me in...
I will see how it goes... My last MMO was Planetside which I dropped for Battlefield:Vietnam...

Ahoy fellow pirate! Glad to know the "Build" project is alive. :pirate2:
.
Arrrrrrrrr, matey! Its alive´n´kickin. The community is working hard on a final release of the Build mod, current version is 14.6, once its done it´ll be called New Horizons. The last two months were pretty exciting actually, contact with the russian devs of CoAS (Cosairs 4) has been established and it seems we´ll finally get the proper tools and information to turn PoTC -and CoAS, of course- into something *really* exceptional. If someone wants more information, just follow the link in my sig (the regular forum should be online again after the weekend, piratesahoy its getting a big facelift atm^^)
But enough of the thread hijack - sorry, Bob ~D.

Too late! :hijacked: already! :pirate2:
CoaS: City of Abandoned Ships, right? They say it will be like good old Sea Dogs, which is good news even if it's only half true.
.
yup, its City of Abandoned Ships (worst game title evarrrr, tbh). The feature list is impressive, the only letdown so far is that you have to fight giant krakens and other mythical stuff once in while, so I don´t think its a true SD successor.
Btw, here´s another very promising pirate-themed game:

Some screens of CoAS.
I was going to ask if it uses the same engine as AOP did, but based on English uniforms and picture of armor, I've never seen anything like that in AOP. Hopefully it's not a flop like AOP was though.
Same engine, but slightly updated (AoP is Storm Engine 2.5, CoAS uses 2.8).
Hopefully it's not a flop like AOP was though.
Well, CoAS -unlike PotC or AoP- isn´t developed by Akella, but by a former russian modding team (seaward.ru), so there´s definitly hope that CoAS will be
an enjoyable (or should I say "playable"?^^) game out of the box.

Is CoAS the new game I think I saw in the old PA! forum that the devs wanted modders from PoTC to switch to and that they wouldn't be disapointed?

Exactly, but as far as I know most of the more senior modders wanted to finish
New Horizons first and then switch over to CoAS. Hopefully the content of the old forum will online again in one or two days so we can see if there´s any news on this matter.

While on the subject of Pirate/sailing MMO. What's the story with Pirates of the Carribean online? I heard of it but it wasin't till today that I saw the commercials for it on tv, judgeing the screenshots, the game looks a little cartoony but maybe it makes up for it in gameplay?:inquisitive:

I absolutely love this game! PotBS will be the death of my college grades. It's a good conversation of Port Royale (it's more like Port Royale, especially in regards to building and trading, than Sid Meier's Pirates!), and I'm addicted to the sea combat. Currently I have a 16th level British NO on the Antigua server, and a 7th level French Privateer on the Bonny server. Honestly, I like the NO better for soloing, since they get a lot of early skills to help them survive, such as Emergency Repairs (absolutely vital skill). He sucks in hand-to-hand combat without his pistol, but my Privateer dominates that position easily with her area-of-effect attacks.
Grape Shot until crew is less than 12 > grapple > Order Attack command on enemy captain > Pistol shots > easy win.

Been playing PotBS for a while myself... A great game for anyone into Naval Combat in the Age of Sail (the golden age of the Buccaneers)...
I am on the Antigua server as Lt. Robert Hall, a lvl 38 Naval Officer commanding HMS Arrow (it's present form being a Gallant Class Naval Frigate). I am a member of the Royal Red Squadron (Society), a great group that with serious has plenty of room for the casual gamer or those no so much into RP...
Loving it more and more...
To get the most out of it you need to get into groups and fight, but you could for a bit of fun get a one month subscription and work through the missions treating it as a SP game for a while...
I can't believe how much real politics there is in it. Between nations and within the nations (the various societies). The alliances, the backroom deals the backstabbing the argurments on policy and strategy...

I read on another forum that the nations in the game have formed a kind of nationalist sentiment. For instance if I speak English and join the French in the game, almost all players I'll encounter will speak French.

Maybe on the european servers, but I don't think that allies in the US...
Mind you on the US servers the French are cronically undermanned...
Kekvit, what name are you using on the Royal Red forums?
