View Full Version : A Question about the EDU weapon traits

Why do some units have their melee weapon classified as a 'siege' weapon so that it is not upgradable in game? Is there like a reason for that due to unit balance or was siege supposed to be simple or something?
This is notably present in the kataphracts of the Baktrian faction and some other units.

Could you elaborate more on why the siege weapon type is used for reform units?

IIRC, it's a coding trick so to speak. Could be wrong, but i believe i read the explanation for this somewhere around here. I wouldn't mind reading it again to be sure.....
If you put a -1 bonus on a weapon type in a building then any unit with that weapon will be completely unrecruitable until that -1 bonus is taken away. We give reform units the siege weapon types to differentiate them from non-reform units. Then we give a -1 bonus to siege weapons until the reform hits. We use it for the sweboz, carthage and cataphract reforms.

Thanks for the info. It's too bad the siege trait doesn't make cataphract charges hit like siege balls, though.

Interestingly, giving negative bonuses to upgrades (in the format weapon_bladed bonus -1 for example) removes the unit with that weapon technology from being able to be recruited but is still listed as available in the relevant building scroll. A building that negates the negative bonus will restore the unit's availability for recruitment. Clued-up modders will see the potential for this feature :) (The Complete EDB Guide, under "Negative effects")
