This is religious in nature, but I still think it's frontroom material, and I hope this thread can maintain a frontroomish courtesy.

Gordon B. Hinckley, the 15th president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or in layman's terms, the 15th Mormon prophet), died yesterday at age 97. He has led the Mormon church for the past 12 years as prophet and was responsible for most of its administration for another 14 years before that.

He was a man of remarkable optimism and energy, who kept his wits and his sense of humor to the end of his life. He has helped expand Mormonism worldwide, driving away much of the mystery and misunderstanding associated with it, has established the church as a major world humanitarian organization, and has been a source of joy and comfort to millions within the Mormon faith.

RIP

Having read the article I would say it is a great loss to the Mormon community.
However, the Mormon church was lucky to have him for 97 years !!.

I liked this : "Adulation is a disease I fight every day."
Knowing more or less what the article states, my impression is that he was a great man.

I did have the pleasure to see him in Brisbane when I walked past the temple dedication there in 2003. He was not easy to spot in front of the crowd, but I stopped and listened. Apparently there was some sort of key-stone ceremony and they were putting mortar around a stone in the wall. The crowd laughed at some jest he made. He looked around and asked a little girl to come forward and put some mortar under the stone. I don't know if that was out of place, but there was appraising murmurs from the crowd.
I don't know... it feels funny saying this, but I felt power radiating from the little man in the white suit.

I'll be honest, I opened the thread because I didn't recognise the name. Sounds like a loss to the world, not just the Saints
