View Full Version : When all is done
Does anyone know what happens at the end of the game. I currently have 85provs and am wondering if it worth finishing. Is it a crappy 10 sec looped clip like in RTW, i hope not. Can you continue playing till the end date, wiping out remerging factions as they come. what happens if im half way through a campaign when the end date comes.
Sorry if these are newb questions, if anyone had any screen shots i'd love to see them.:inquisitive:
Im guessing nobody has ever completed it then. :feedback:

You can play through to the end date, but usually (especially if you start in Early) you will have conquered everyone by then. You also get a "lesser victory" option when you have 60% of the provinces, as well (but you have passed this already).
As for what happens, well I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise .... let's just say victory is its own reward :laugh4:

As far as I remember, the victory screen isn't graphically impressive (wouldn't fit with the overall look of the game anyway) but in any case better than the RTW popup (which isn't difficult...). But I do recall that it was very atmospheric. And it's a full-screen thing, not a tiny popup.

Can't comment on the comparison to the RTW ending, having never seen it, but will agree with the description offered by my learned friend...

This is OT but it came up:
Do you only play MTW:VI Bamff?
Just curious as a) that's cool and b) if so, no reason for you to even look at RTW. After years of experience in MTW, you would just steamroll the whole map.
Yeah, I have to confess that I have only ever played vanilla MTW, MTW:VI, and (just of late) have dabbled with XL.
It is such a good game (IMHO), that I have never felt the need to try any of the other TW titles. At some point I may, but I feel that there is still way too much territory for me to cover here!

As said, really no reason for you to try the other titles if you're experienced in MTW: VI...
Obviously, if you enjoy MTW, well that's reason enough alone right?
Still- After this much time, I doubt you would stick with the others even if you did try them...

Like Bampf, I to only play MTW/VI XL In fact, since I got MTW about 3 years ago I have played little else. I am interested in RTW and MTW2, but our ols computer isn't up to it. But now I am facing a problem. Our old computer is on its last legs and we are about to get a new super duper machine. So RTW and MTW2 are an option soon, but I am worried that the new set up will not be able to play MTW - so I am a bit torn at the moment - I foresee being on the Apothacry boards trying to get the game going.
To loose MTW will be a great shame because it is such a great game - with the emphasis on game. I suppose when it came out it was high on the eye candy stakes but it is the gaming aspect that is so good - there is always a new challenge and I think you could replay the game over and over again and still have new things occur. To me MTW is a bit like chess - simple game, nothing special to look at but constantly intellectually challenging, always enjoyable, always surprising - if I am about to loose it, the new games have a lot to live up to.

You would not have a problem running MTW on your new machine as far as I am aware. When you do get your new computer, make sure you transfer your save games across. (of course, make sure you update & use the same versions on the new computer.)

My concern is that the improved graphics card etc will mean that there could be problems with running MTW. Hopefully I am wrong, but the boards seem full of people with problems. I am aware about the saved games and hope to transfer them - but only if the game works!!

When I bought my new PC last year, I got this graphics card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150185). It's definitely not the "latest and greatest" obviously, but I've also not had any major problems running the game. I don't know if it's available across the Pond over there, but it might be worth looking into.
The biggest piece of advice I can give, though, is to stay away from Windows Vista. I've seen so many complaints about older games (including MTW) not being able to run on it, that I don't think I'll ever get it as my OS -- XP works just fine for me.

Martok pretty much covers it completely...
Reading through this, the only two issues I could think of personally were:
1) Don't use Vista if at all possible. This probably would have a conflict with MTW:VI.
2) Specifically download and install graphics drivers from 2003/2004. Any set from April 2003 or August 2003 usually works a charm. Regardless of what video card you're using, unless it's an absolute MONSTER, using the same video drivers you're used to on MTW should bypass any major issue that would come up.
The great thing about this game is that at this point in time, it really can be played on almost any system. I've actually seen people playing MTW:VI on buses/planes/trains over the years, on very basic laptop systems.
You should be ok...and even if a few problems crop up, they shouldn't be anything major.
Not to labour the point, but....
Graphics cards are an issue to be wary of. Any nVidia cards more recent than the 7xxx series are likely not to be of much use in running MTW....painful experience speaking here!

you get a roughly 5 minute speech about how you have conquered all who have stood before you dominated the world and secured your place in history
its a pretty good speech and its different for every faction
its what kept me playing all these years (trying to get that pesky polish victory)
can anyone say whether its different depending on start era? cos i may have another 3 years to do :)

Totally off-topic: MTW works perfectly on my laptop, which has Vista. I don't have Viking Invasion though, anyone know where I can buy it?
On topic: I've never got past 1300, I normally give up by then :embarassed:

I ve seen the defeat one many times-it s kind of a consolation speech.
The victory one is not bad; the Shogun one is better however. I ve never sat out a RTW campaign for that long.

Just check amazon, ebay or something. I've got my copy from e-bay but that was before MTW gold came out. I don't know how many copies of VI still float around.

If you can't get it perhaps you can buy the Gold edition DVD, it has VI on it (it should be in the bargain bin, don't forget the patch though!:laugh4: )

If you dont have all the lands but the majority, you get a message claiming that although not completing the game in full, you have the largest empire.
How do I know this?
Played as the aragonese and ignored ireland completely after it rebelled.

The Gold Edition doesn't always require the patch. Some of the earlier ones sold did, but I believe this has now been addressed.
I've still seen VI on it's own on sale recently but it costs about £10 over here which is the same as you would pay for the Gold Edition, so you may as well just buy that.

Hmmm...I got my Gold Edition version of MTW: VI in August 2006. It didn't have the 2.01 patch on it, and it was the PC-DVD Rom version, too. It *might* have changed since, but I wouldn't have a clue...

I am suprised at how many people dont play late or high. I think in some ways the game is more interesting as the computer is more developed, that means less peasent spam.

I personally don't care for playing in Late so much, as gunpowder starts becoming common. (I've never been a fan of the gunpowder age.) The High period is fun, though, and I do play it from time to time.

I agree, i dont wait with open arms for the inventon of gunpowder. The high period has also been my age of choice. Doesn anyone know if the TW team have any more games on the horizon. A few more medieval ones wouldnt be bad...:egypt:

For some reason, I'm addicted to starting in Early...I don't like how the building up is done for me in High and Late (and sometimes, it's all the more confusing as to how to organise my kingdom).

From what I gather from the TW website, the new game is called Empires and will involve seabattles in the 1700 - 1800's. Mind you they already have made 2 games playing in the middle ages, so perhaps a new area was in order. Personally I would like to see something about Biblical times (Egyptians, babylonians, Assyrians, Persians, that kind of thing)
On the starting age, I just like to build up my own empire, hence I like starting in Early. I would like to have had some other more advanced gunpowder unit (like muskets) on top of the arquebuskiers.
Edit1: I am curious about how the seabattles will be worked out (regarding how seawarfare is handled in the present games). :inquisitive:
Edit2: I will take a look at Ancient TW soon, time allowing. :juggle2:

Well, I personally like starting in Early for the same reason mentioned already in this thread: I like to be in total control of building my empire. Further, I like lengthy campaigns where internal empire building is just as important as expansion.
As far as gunpowder goes: I like the gunpowder era, especially after a long, challenging campaign. To me, it's like the playoffs after the regular season.
Everything culminating with the crackling of gunfire and the booming of artillery is perfect imo....

I've never really used gun powder troops much, do you actually find them effective?

Neither have I. The fact they don't work in the rain pretty much discounts them in a lot of northern European battles. Also, I've had arbalestors on one ridge and aquebusiers on another. Guess which got were more effective?
I never seen much of the 'fear' of gunpowder on the battlefield either. Large rocks and cannonballs however...
The only gunpowder units I tend to use are culverins, cannons, serpentines etc.

What kind of an army (unit wise) would you comprise to handle an enemy who is high up the tech tree in gunpowder units?
As in, just for example, lots of handgunners and gunpowder artillery protected by spearman/halberdiers/pikeman etc...

Good question. If I ever actually run into such an army when playing, I'll be sure to let you know. ~;p
Yeah I jest, but I'm not really exaggerating -- I honestly don't think I ever have come up against an army with a lot of gunpowder units. I've usually won the minor victory by the time that could ever happen, so the scenario you've posed is pretty much outside of my experience.
That being said, I would probably employ a large contingent of long-range missile units -- Arbalesters, Longbowmen, etc. -- along with enough cavalry to take care of the enemy artillery crews. Missile units in MTW (especially the higher-level ones) generally outrange gunpowder units, so they ought to do the job.
I repeat, however, that I'm only guessing here. The odds are that you probably have more experience against that kind of army than I do! :smash:

The only experience I have in it (that I can recall) is in custom battles...
And when it happened, your strategy was the same I went with. Missile units are often considerably more effective than Gunpowder units so I stock up on them, with some rows of defensive spearman/pikeman in the front, and I set up my cavalry on the flanks (and or some in the center) to be able to screen and pursue the enemy gunpowder.
Assumably, I'll play enough in the coming months to see an enemy composition along these lines and see how during a campaign, things ought to be handled. On the field of battle as well as logistically beforehand.
My own approach to an enemy loaded up with gunpowder units is to flank with mounted archers (turcopoles/mxb's/ha's - whatever is available).
These guys won't do much damage, but they can cause havoc by drawing the attention of the enemy.
The damage is then done by arbalesters.
I have encountered AI armies that contain numbers of handgunners. I prefer to take them out from a distance because they are surprisingly tough if you try to mix it hand to hand.

Yes. A spear and arb army in arid to semi-arid terrain: Devestating. They don't want to charge you from the front because of the spears and if they get close enough, you blast 'em. Keep a couple cav and swords to be safe. Valor 7 arbs rock!
