Today I started a new Campaign. by about the 2nd year I was going into debt with my koku. I kept getting into debt year after year for 5 years. Then I got attacked, and because I was skint with no real numbers of troops to defend with I ended the game and started again.
It did it again
and the twice more.
I was green at the time.
Is there a reason for this?

PS: I was not building any buildings other than a sword dojo, and two queues of troops.

You might be trying to build too much too fast -- for instance, don't bother trying to keep all your build queues busy, because you can't afford it. In fact, you probably shouldn't build that much besides some troops until you've booted Imagawa off Kyushu, since your starting income is rather low and the Imagawa presence lengthens your border quite a bit.

i agree. after winning my first two campaigns, i had gotten used to the quicker pace of the later years, and upon starting my third campaign, I immedietly overdrew myself. besides a few extra ashi or yari samurai (or archers) you shouldn't be building much beyond a few land improvements (in provinces where they're going to matter) or maybe a large castle your first year if you don't plan on doing much fighting.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it imposssible to go negative actually spending? I'm told I haven't enough funds if I try to buy too many troops/buildings as the turn ends. Then the AI builds what it can and forgets the rest. To go negative requires bad harvests, yes?

Cheers guys.

ShaiHulud: You can go negative. I went down to over -5000!

ShaiHulud, you can go negative because every year your armies require one koku of maintenance per person. So if your koku income in autumn is less than the number of soldiers you have, you'll go negative.
