Hi, I just got this game, and am already hooked, a buddy from PlanetAOE referred me here. So, I am starting on the camp, and I am Mori. The Warrior Monk bonus seemed cool, but I could really use some tips. Anything would be apreciated thanks. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

As a new player, Mori will be difficult. His wealth is just about the lowest. You might consider re-starting as Hojo or Uesugi. They have ample funds and Hojo has the best starting lands for both income and defense.
Welcome!

I've been playing STW since it first came out and I am having trouble with the Mori clan myself. (I'm on my 3rd attempt).
Best opening strategy seems to be to take out the Takeda lands first using armies heavy in Archers with just enough spearmen to protect them from the Takeda Cavalry. Go for the port province as ealry as you can as it stops Lord T sending reinforcements.
After that the top priority has to be stealing some of the richer provinces from Lord Oda. Mori desperately need the Koku.
At present I am fending off the Uesugi hordes in Hida and Mino having captured most of Lord Oda's provinces and I have managed to get to a point where I am churning out Warrior Monks every other turn (120 man units).
I'm inflicting double or treble damage on the Blue hordes but they just keep coming and there armour and weapons are better quality than mine.
I'm really getting fed up of those hills in Hida now but I cant see any immediate way of breaking the deadlock. It just seems to be a war of attrition and the enemy definitely have the greater resources.

the trick is to smash Takeda first turn. It can esily be done with a bit of troop shuffling and it massively frees up your military resources. plus you get a port. As a rule I try and expand into at least one provine of the island beneath the Mori landsearly, and get the Shimazu province on the mainland. Both these reduce your borders, and Shimazu will usually make peace. THen hit Oda hard and fast. He's desperate to hang on to Harima but you need it. Force Oda back a couple of provinces, and you've usually got time for a bit of a breather to rebuild the troops that are getting fasirly depleted. Keep the daimyo in Harima if that's a border province, Oda comes for it, and the honour bonus is damn useful, especially against a routable ashi heavy army.
the downside in taking Takeda out in the west early is that he tends to falleasily in the East. Tough lubck, but it does mean Hojo or Uesugi get some decent provinces. Hopefully Hojo will get himself killed becase then matters won't get so hordey, but you can't rely onn that
As Kurando says go see the Strategy archive, it's been updated recently.

hey, pWyLL_tWyCeBoRn, congrats on making the right decision! i still think you should be spanked severely and tortured for at least 24 hrs for ever going the AOE way... although if you promise to burn or otherwise destroy anything AOE related that you have, and promise not to ever think about it again, we could skip the torture part... ahmmm... anyways... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I am the one who recommended him to come here http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif. This forum is the best out of all the STW forums I have visited. It is better to play Hojo rather than Mori for beginners because the clan has the richest lands and is neighbors to clans with rich lands. Nothing like mastering the Hojo Horde and steamrolling the enemy http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif!

I kinda forgot there was a campaign game. I've gotten so used to logging on for a good battle or two, as I'm so disappointed with the AI, and Hojo Hordes. I'll have to try to complete a campaign again sometime.

Yes, I got steamrolled today by the Hojo hordes, it came down to me and them, and I was going to lose it was just a matter of time, I could not keep up with their huge hordes of soldiers. Eventually I got assasinated. Oh well, I'll give Hojo a try. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Like the name! Guy Gavriel Kay fan?
Definitely start as blue or purple until you get the hang of the game. Not only will that get you lots of koku early on, but you also don't have to face the Hojo Horde!
I've won as Mori (twice on Normal, once on Hard), usually taking out Takeda, then moving south onto the Ronin Island, since that first province provides good koku, and the castle province makes good ashigaru/muskets. Admitedly, I got lucky in that Hojo, Uesugi, Takeda and Imagawa were so involded with each other that I could take out Oda before either of them became dominant.

hey guys, I actually liked AOK when it came out, especially the later expansion. So zip it.
for new players, I also recommend Uesugi or Hojo. The counter-intuitive thing is that most beginners end up playing as Shimazu, for two reasons:
1. He's first on the list, which is where most players expect the easiest option to be.
2. He's isolated; which, again to most players, tends to imply safety and time to learn the game.
This, as we all know, is wrong.

AoK is a very fun game and had me interested for a while. It's one of those addictive games. I do think that Shogun is a better game, but no need to Age bash.

Yah I am a BIG Kay fan. There's a good site at www.brightweavings.com (http://www.brightweavings.com) for all things Kay related. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Also, I ran over Takeda and Shimazu fairly quickly even with Mori, they dont look like the most formidable civs on the planet.

Thanks for the Kay link! Fun stuff! And anyone who can make a John Carpenter reference in his Location will do all right... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif (Six Demon Bag!!!!)
Takeda has it tough 'cuz his forces and lands are split. Shimazu has it tough, because their lands are so poor - almost as poor as Mori's, but Shimazu doesn't get the armories! If you want to control the south west island, you need the top left corner - those are the real koku-producers.

AoE? that's a real game? i always thought it was an alpha version of a game that didnt make it to the shelves. *grin*
as for playing the mori...one word...shinobi. i'd love to play some of you mighty warlords in a multi campaign game...i'd undermine your hoardes before they could draw their swords ;) you'd never get your troops to the front cause they'd all be running back to their home provinces to put down rebelions ;)
stealth may be the way of the 'coward' but it will make a coward of the bravest more readily than steel.
