The time has come, people rejoice, the first AAR Challenge is upon us. The rules are as follows:
Each participant will complete an AAR on a short campaign for the faction of their choice, or character of their choice.
Any interested participants sign up here. This will be moved to the throne room when the competition starts good luck :balloon2:
There is no definite start time as of yet, hopefully we can attract lots of interest :clown:
I think it would be a better chalenge if you gave each contestant some screenies and some raw data to see what people made out of it.
Cheers...

Your point is noted, we shall see what everyone else thinks, hopefully not that.

I wouldn't mind mAIOR's suggestion, since for the next week I might not have access to a computer that has RTW. It would also be kind of interesting to see what we could make of just sceenshots.
The other suggestion is fine as well, both are appealing to me. I guess this is me signing up. =)

OK, i'll see what screen shots i can come up with :balloon:
Sure, I'll join. I don't mind the other idea, but just in case you go with the original plan, my video card should be in when the competition starts, so I should be able to post some nice screenshots.

There should be breakthroughs this coming week, who is in? Also can a poll be added for
a) Short campaign AAR
b) AAR of a character
c) A write up of a screenshot.

Might I ask what you want the question in the added poll to be Tom0?

What the Public Want? Maybe.

The poll has been added. I've made the question along the same lines as what you requested, although it's not exact. Any problems drop me a PM ~:)

I voted for 'Short Campaign AAR'. Can I propose that we do something different from the average short campaign? I am now playing a Greek campaign in Gaul with my capital at Massilia.
The rules for this might be:
--you are to abandon your starting provinces within ten turns
--you are not allowed to retake your starting provinces within fifty/forty turns
--for interesting campaigns, relocating to a region far away from initial region is recommended
I find that this makes for a pretty interesting and challenging, if ahistorical short campaign. Aye/Nay? ~:)
I say we play:
Using ER Random Julii city script, and returning to that city.
Or doing a Character AAR like i voted.
The Wandering Scholar

What is the ER Random Julii script?
Quirinus
02-12-2008, 06:37
ER is Epistolary Richard, a modder, and he created this mod where you start as the Julii with a random starting region every time. For example, you could start in Athens, or in Chersonesus, or in Cyrene, or Nepte or Halicarnassus...... Not sure what happens if you displace the region of an existing faction.
Random Julii mod (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=52718)
Though I'm not sure if it works for v1.3 and below, seeing as only v1.5 has the provincial campaign option, which pretty much rules me out as I am unable to update from v1.3.
A character AAR sounds pretty cool too, though I have no idea how that works. Somebody explain please? =D

A character AAR focuses on the actions, battles and life of one character rather than that of an entire faction.

....I see. I thought it would be more complicated, haha. :laugh4:

I like the ERRJ Script idea

So is this thing still on? Activity in the Colosseum seems pretty lousy these few days, but I'd definitely join this.

Who do we have, you, me and Caius?
Quirinus
02-14-2008, 17:07
I suppose maybe Punicus would join too. It doesn't matter, more will join if we put it in our sigs, maybe.
I just want to get started 'cos it's the weekend, and I can only play on weekends. =P

I have a Broken Crescent battle where I brought all elephants against multiple Mongol stacks I've been wanting to write up, if that'd be appropriate. :2thumbsup:

I'd be happy to submit a AAR for this; is it for any RTW mod? I have a certian mod in mind...
The Wandering Scholar

Anything goes
I suppose maybe Punicus would join too.Yeah, definitely. So this is just going to be a standard short campaign AAR? And when is it starting?
The Wandering Scholar

OK, this has digressed into an anything goes free for all :P Should this be moved or are we ok here?
Omanes Alexandrapolites

After a few moments of re-considering, I'm going to move this thread the Throne Room - although I'm willing to allow sign-ups in the Colosseum, it's probably better that discussion on the game's set up and the suchlike goes over there :burnout:

If that's the case, then I guess I'll start writing it up. Does it matter if I have no screenshots, though? I want to do an AAR for a game I'm playing, but I have currently played some twenty years in it, and I didn't think I'd be doing an AAR whe I started, so I didn't get any screenshots.

If you can make your writing explain what is going on then thats fine. Infact you get brownie points
I will try to be in, but my computer is having some odd actitude that wont allow me to play it correctly. Please understand me if i drop out.
Which are the rules for this game?
The Wandering Scholar
02-16-2008, 14:29
Basic rule:
Write something good using any template you want :beam:
We have a tie between AAR of a character and a short campaign. Can I do an AAR of a character?
The Wandering Scholar
02-17-2008, 20:35
Of course :beam:
Quirinus

Where do we post it afterwards? In this thread, in the Throne Room, or in the Mead Hall? Or do we set up a little invisionfree forum just to deal with it?
The Wandering Scholar
02-18-2008, 23:42
Good question, comsidering its not really a competition as such just a bit of fun maybe give it a title and post in the mead hall? That would give a nice selection of good things to read in there which I think is waht it is for. Just make sure you end the title with something like (AAR-C)
I'd say that we send our PM with the AAR to Tom0. Then he posts all the AAR's he can gather in a single thread. In other thread, we vote which was da winner.
The Wandering Scholar
02-19-2008, 12:47
I'm for that, make sure you save a copy of the AAR as i ill have to delete them from my pm (in can only have ten) optimistuc i know.
Quirinus
02-19-2008, 15:05
That's a good suggestion, Caius. Though I think a Member should handle this-- they have, what, 50 PM slots?
Also, I've only started on mine (I'm a slacker). But I suspect mine might become a long-ish kind of AAR. Wouldn't that clog up the common thread, when it's posted?
(BTW, how come you're not a Member yet, Tom0?)
The Wandering Scholar
02-20-2008, 17:12
I wouldn't clog anything up, it has to be posted somewhere :p If people start by posting to me then I will send a pm to a member if I am struggling with space and such. It shouldn't be a problem though. As the creator of this I feel that I should be little further with my piece too lol.
I believe that i will become a member after the hofs are over.
I have 500. Not 50.
But that would be unfair for the rest, as I would know what the others are writing and get something better.
I will contact TosaInu. Our God can help us.

So to clarify everything, the current course is to post the stories in the Mead Hall as an AAR, label them as a part of the AAR Challenge, and update as necessary? I've got the introductory section ready to set the stage, so to speak, for the battles I intend to describe in more detail and can post it any time.

PM to me unless anyone has any objections
Tom0, I contacted TosaInu to see if you can get a bigger PM space to receive the AAR's.

02-21-2008, 21:30
Can do. I'll PM you installment 1 in a forum appropriate format sometime tonight. If you'd like to view the images without the squashed up PM form you can always start a post, C&P, and 'preview' it without actually posting it.

The Wandering Scholar
02-22-2008, 12:55
Thanks Ramses II CP I got your PM. I have refrained from reading it, one question, if I copy and paste to a new thread, will the pictures be visible?
Ramses II CP
02-22-2008, 15:11
Yep, the links for the images should be fine if you hit 'reply' and copy and paste everything except the 'quote' tags. You could also send me a pm when you wanted it posted to a particular thread, and I can put it up for you as I have a copy.
I'll be sending along part 2 probably sometime today, and then part 3 is coming along pretty well also. I'm expecting 4 or 5 total parts, depending on how the climactic battle comes together.
