LUDWIGSHAFEN - Police found eight bodies in the building in the city of Ludwigshafen and one woman died in a hospital after the fire Sunday, police spokeswoman Simone Eisenbarth said. Twenty-two people remained hospitalized Monday.
«Unfortunately, we cannot exclude further victims,»
Eisenbarth said. Investigators were not immediately able to
enter parts of the smoldering building because the
structure, much of it made of wood, was in danger of
collapsing.
The cause of the fire, which started Sunday afternoon, was
not clear and the victims had not yet been identified,
Eisenbarth said.
Police said 24 people all of them Turkish citizens
were registered as living in the four-story building, but
that more people had been in the house because of carnival
celebrations.
Police said the house’s old wooden staircase swiftly
collapsed after the fire broke out; and that, in some
cases, residents threw their children to police officers
before jumping out of the building themselves.
BERLIN - “We received a threat,” a police spokesman said, adding that dogs trained in tracking explosives were searching the building. He declined to give further details.
On Sunday, a fire in a housing block in Ludwigshafen killed
nine people with Turkish backgrounds.
The blaze has increased tensions between Germans and Turks
in the west German city and speculation is mounting that the
fire could have been a racially motivated attack.
Erdogan is due to visit the site later before going on to
meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Friday.
German television said the Labour Office was just a few
metres (yards) away from the site Erdogan would be visiting.
Police have said the cause of Sunday’s fire is unclear but
they are investigating all possibilities.

Also I have read that some children insist that they had seen someone with a "white face" pouring "something" around/in the apartment before the fire.
Random events or is there a noticable uprise of racial hatred there in Germany ?

Man that's bad, it must have been a pretty big fire....I'm really sorry for the victims and their families.
There were certainly some people who discriminated against Turks in Germany when I was there last year, but children saying they saw "someone with a white face" really doesn't prove much, and could very well be caused by shock and a desire for a scapegoat.
Hopefully it'll all be cleared up soon.
Had this happened in America, the perps would have had their path cut out for them: Handcuffs -> Courthouse -> Death Chamber -> Hell.

Yeah, no such thing as 'unsolved arson' in America.
:candle:
3 times the amount of people that should be living in such a small place, of course they are saying someone burrned it. And if it wasn't it prrobably happened because 4 times as many people were allowed to live there, I believe we call it toleration or ratio one if these I always get mixed up.

1) I'm sorry for all who have lost their lives and for the one which loved them.
2) Could we not wait with all the speculations until we see conclusive evidence.
3) Speculation is distressing. For example one might say that the turkish minority uses to a larger degree of waterpipes, smokes more and handles fire not as careful as other people. Plus it was carnival. So suddendly put a good deal of shame on the inhabitants of the community.
4) Thus we should not speculate...
OA
Ehh, that is tragic, but a few things I find a bit odd:
1) wooden staircase :sweatdrop:
Maybe some houseowners should think about upgrading, yes, old houses are nice but obviously wooden staircases aren't the best, generally speaking
2) "Random events or is there a noticable uprise of racial hatred there in Germany ?"
I think it takes just one guy, a fuel canister and a lighter...
You may call that an uprising of racial hatred but I'm personally not aware of one, if it really was arson, I have to say it happens now and then, some scumbags just light up a house full of foreigners/immigrants, we had that before so it's probably not an uprising.
3) "Had this happened in America, the perps would have had their path cut out for them: Handcuffs -> Courthouse -> Death Chamber -> Hell."
:laugh4: That was great! :2thumbsup:
Surprise surprise illegal powerdraining, yes that is dangerous.

Horrible picture, but the baby made it.
I'm afraid its rather uprising.
Discrimination level into Germany is slowly but unstopable rising.
Nice example we can have into City Gorlitz, next to polish border. On the one side of river there is German city Gorlitz, on the other polish city Zgorzelec. People there are cooperating very much and cities are almost like one.
Some weeks ago when Poland entered Shengen area and borders became full opened (earlier people crossing borders had to have documents).
And since that time police from city Gorlitz into west Germany, next to polish border, started controlling Poles, who have just crossed border. To be fair with EU law, they are not controlling on the border, but 100 metres from it. They can control one person few times a day. As an explanation police tells that level of stealing cars increased dramatically, so they have to stop criminals and find missing cars. It sounds very funny when compared with fact that polish children are being controlled too (people from both cities are sending their childrens to school abroad) - police check their rucksack beceause might have cars there :D
Furthermore that action against polish "thiefs" is being made only into Gorlitz.
It looks like group of :daisy: who are in power.

Yes, that's what's being discussed. What's your point?
It happens. :hide:
In other news, there are violent Africans who kill people and we plan to invade Poland again. ~;)
Apparently Frag is right, police thinks it may have been old electronics in the cellar and illegal powerdraining, says this german article (http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/0,1518,534179,00.html).
It also says that one little girl said she saw a guy with freckles but had to admit later that she didn't even know what freckles are...

It sounds like someone might have told the little girl to say that. Maybe to delay the cops from finding out that it wasn't a case of arson, but of illegal power-draining?
