View Full Version : Artillery crews

Servus,

I stumbled across a useful trick Maybe everyone else was way ahead of me on this one.

I always deployed my scorpions just ahead of my line. They would soften the enemy and then they would have to push the damn things back behind the line not to get slaughtered.

I found that by hitting the melee attack button and pointing towards the enemy they will leave the catapults. Then as soon as they do I have them scamper back behind the legionaries. (I am picturing the British artillery crews heading for the safety of the squares during the cavalry charges at Waterloo) This lets them get in extra shots and not get chopped to bits.

Is this common knowledge? I wish I had known it a year or so ago if it is.

Welcome to the EB forum!

I've always used withdraw for this, it serves the same purpose. Either action makes them drop their artillery so you can move them behind your lines to safety. It doesn't matter if artillery are destroyed, just the crew.

How about simply using the "drop equipment" button? :inquisitive:

I may be mistaken, but I do not believe that works for artillery.

You may be right. It's been some time since I played. :embarassed:

Yup, that only works for seige weapons actually constructed during the siege (ie rams, towers etc).
Cheers

Thanks for the replies. I hope this was useful to some who had not run across it.

No, you are right, Mouzafphaerre. You can order your units to drop the artillery, you just get this option after all your ammo is depleted.

Well if you need your artillerymen to high tail it BEFORE you run out of ammo,
hit the melee (alternate attack) command and then skulk back behind the serried ranks of heavy infantry.

I know, you can also order them to flee the battle then cancel orders:yes:

Withdraw. Very useful for me, to leave siege weapons in front of my first line. Abandoned art breaks enemy charges, especially for heavy cavalry if my stacks lack of spearmen. The crew is safe behind the army, gaining experience battle after battle...:smash:
