View Full Version : Siegetower
:furious3:
Hi!
So, if I besiege a town with stone wall or huge stone wall I must use siegetowers.
But in case,75%, our solders don't go inside the tower. They are just run up and down in front of the entrance.:help: :help:

Um, is that because you can only have 1 unit in the tower at a time? and they go in single file?

It's a hardcoded bug in RTW 1.5 and in BI 1.6. Not sure if that's apply alexsander as well.
I send 1 type of unit in the tower at the same time. And no they are not in a single line, they are squeeze on the doorstep of the tower, and run up and down but don't go inside the tower.:furious3:
And Leviathan DarklyCute I played a lot with 1.5 vanilla R:TW and 1.6 BI but I never met this bug.

Sometimes a unit will not go up it's assigned seige tower and it can be really annoying when things are touch and go.
Sometimes halting the unit and then re-clicking on the wall top will get them moving it may take several goes to get the whole unit up.

I play EB with BI 1.6 and i do not have this problem. They wait some time but then get going.

Extremely annoying yes. A few days ago I had to order a unit of Thraikioi Peltastai 20 times to go on the wall until finally everybody was up. I had the bug also with Taxeis Triballoi, seems to be a Thracian desease.

Ive actually had that same problem in RTW and BI many times. As long as u keep clicking (and are patient unlike me) they will eventually all make it to the top.
I thought this bug only applies to the larger siege towers for the big walls cause there entrance is a bit higher then the smaller towers and the ai path finding have problems with that sort of height difference some times
i'm sure if you search through the forum you will find more threads about that
ps if they stop entering the tower just click on various points on the wall to let a few soldiers enter again and you have to do this multiple times
I've had a similar problem where most of a unit will climb into the siege tower and a small number pace around at the base of the wall. Then if I want to move them from the captured walls into the city, I have to move them outside the city (so they climb down the siege tower)- otherwise, they form up inside the city and just sit there because there are still five people with unhealed head wounds pacing around in front of the walls.
Thanks replies, but somebody know the solution of this f:furious3: kin problem???:help:

In my experience they mostly do it themselves right fine as long as you allow the engine to "autopilot" the procedure from the start... problems start popping up more if you start giving the unit order halfway through.

hey, careful with the language there. Good thing you censored it, but still coming pretty close...
There is no solution that I would care to tell you since none of it is permanent. One way is to run your units out and into the siegetowere over and over, and each time they run in, a few more will enter the tower. Repeat until they're all in. That's all I can tell you.

I was annoyed by the stupid path-finding (not only that sometime soldiers cannot get into the tower, I have more than once experienced them jumping between the siege-tower´s bridge and the wall, all dead of course:wall: ) on large and epic stone walls too. Therefore I have disabled the option to upgrade the walls further beyond simple stone walls. Since that time my game become much more enjoyable and I would kindly recommend you to do the same.
How to do that? Open "export_descr_buildings.txt" file, and search for the entries marked in red colour and delete them

I thought this bug was fixed with the 1.5 patch. I certainly dont get it.

Actually I don't use siege towers, after an attempted assault on Ekbatana in my Hayasdan campaign, the siege tower units were retarded, they moved in a similar way V.T. Marvin and Kirill described
after that suicidal attack (well I reloaded the game because my general got killed by a stray arrow while charging towards the town square which was nearly empty), I decided to use ladders instead, the ladder units can run while equipped and they climb up walls faster than if you use a siege tower, and most of my towers burned up before even landing near a wall

Actually I don't use siege towers, (...) I decided to use ladders instead...
The trouble is that you cannot use ladders when attacking large or epic stone wall - these are to tall for ladders to be used. That is precisely one of the reasons why I eliminated these monstrous and bugged walls from my game altogether.:idea2:
on a separate note, I'm playing as the Ptollies, i've taken Antioch from the Seleucids, and when they use siege towers on me, their siege towers appear to have some kind of Ballistae on top of them that decimates the units i have sitting there waiting for them. but, when i build siege towers, they don't have this ability. please advise.
This is probably because yu have large stone walls and they don't. When attacking large walls, you've got different, larger siege towers, which have this kind of ballista.
Does anybody know how to reduce the power of that thing? As it is now, that's more like ww2 AA gun than an antique siege weapon.

It's functionally the good old repeater bolt-thrower from the vanilla AFAIK. (Which, incidentally, was a historical weapon; a sort of complicated semi-autoloader thingy which fed new bolts from a drum.) Dunno how to mod it though.
However, by what I've read of ancient siege warfare that actually pretty much is a realistic depiction of a high-end period siege tower. Those things really were more artillery and archery platforms whose primary job was to give the height advantage and sweep the battlements of defenders than anything else. Some of the bigger helopolis the Diadochi seem to have been particularly fond of were practically armour-plated fortresses on wheels, bristling with firepower.
Similarly, the really nasty-ass firepower of the towers in the higher-end walls is actually by and large entirely realistic for such defensive works. They really did tend to be crawling with emplaced artillery.

...speaking of modding the things, I just found this (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=62498) in the Scriptorium. I figure rate of fire is the thing most would be interested in.
