Does anyone know any good book about it?
What do you mean Krook? Community service punishment?

I imagine that you mean community service sentences, which are non-custodial punishments such as litter-picking, graffiti cleaning and other useful work for the community trangressed against.
There's a research paper here (http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs/r92.pdf) on the efficiency of some of these, and plenty more such information if your google the UK Home Office or the Probation Service. I don't know of any books (not my area of expertise) but EA may have some ideas.
Oh, is it that. Thank you Banquo's Ghost.
And sorry for being thick skulled KrooK.

KrooK asked about England & Wales. Just for reference, we use Community Service here too (US), (Info LINK) (http://www.uscourts.gov/fedprob/supervise/community.html) as a condition of probation.

Sorry Guv, last time I looked at criminal law was Bar school. I wasn't that hot on it then, and one thing that is certain is that sentencing will have changed a lot over the years. (Possibly the pendulum is right back where it was then, but if so that would only be by chance.)
Archbold is the practitioners bible on all matters criminal, but it focuses on the needs of practising lawyers, not academics or criminologists. And the needs of practising lawyers are passing strange, as you might imagine
These chaps could probably put you right: http://www.wildy.com/
Thanks for fast reply guys. I see I wrote wrong title.
I meant community sentence - especially community order. Community service is old name.

Community Service as punishment is still used. BTW you got it basically right in your title. Here in the United States for certain minor infractions of the law - a number of hours working on Community Service projects is often done in lieu of spending time in jail.
