i'm new to the game, so i'm still trying to figure everything out. how does one go about starting a crusade?

Build one where you build other units. It requires a Chapter House

You have to have a Chapter house, then you build a crusade.

To launch it drag and drop it onto a target province and the Pope will tell you how much he wants to endorse it. The Crusade can then be moved towards the target province, but not away from it.

What exactly will happen along the way? Because that's what I don't get.. will you pick up troops from other countries like a snowball effect??

Christian provinces you enter will often donaet troops to you, or such them from you.

High-zeal provinces will give you troops - the higher the zeal the more/better quality. Existing troops in the province will often join the crusade, again higher zeal will result in more of tehm joining you.

Low Zeal provinces will deplete your forces through desertion.

So sending a crusade though high-zeal well garrisoned provinces held by your Christian "friends" is a good way to recruit their troops to your cause! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

when do i get to build a chapter house? it's not among the structures that i can build. what do i need to build it?

I mean no offense, but perhaps you should check the tech tree that came with the game. It will give you all sorts of good info like that.

i don't have a tech tree. do you honestly think i'd be asking this if i had it right under my nose? my version is borrowed.
