Puppet Pope

When the Papacy is conquered, the conquering faction installs a puppet pope while the majority of the former hierarchy gets away. However the new pope doesn’t seem to do anything for the conquering faction. One would think that having control over a political and religious figure as popular as the pope would have some benefit, like excommunicating other factions, declaring crusades against other factions etc.

Would not that make the faction very powerfull.
The on the ralism level, Henry II mate his mate Archbishop of Cantebury, and we all know how he was repayed for that friendly gesture!

the trouble with de-throning a pope and putting up a puppet, is that everyone knows he's a puppet. thus, crusades would likely never get started under such a fake, zeal would be deplorable, even if you could get a crusade started under such a guise, and even if you got it started, it would likely break down as people turn away in disbelief.

a puppet normally rules by threat and fear. once removed from that direct threat, folks tend to disregard such 'leaders'. more than likely if the puppet were try to raise a crusade it would backfire on him and rebel against him, or a crusade would be raised by someone against him to begin with.

the only thing i see worthy of for the game would be in being able for ANY catholic faction to declare a crusade on the fellow who unseated the real pope.

What no one seems to realize is that during all of this, the real Pope is hiding in the Popecave, where he also keeps the Popemobile.

The cave is located on an island in the Mediterranean that the Pope leases from Dr. Evil in the off season.

Just thought I would clear that up for everybody.
