I was playing as the Byzantine Empire and was starting to get very annoyed at the Turkish forces who kept on taking my lands (due to the fact that my forces were spread very thin). I quickly hired a massive mercenary army and started to push the Turks back. I reached their southernmost lands and invaded one of their desert provinces.
I wasn't really looking forward to the upcoming battle. I was fighting on hot desert with most of my troops wearing heavy armour and having the (tire quickly in desert) stats on them. The Turkish army was also bigger and the Faction leader along with several of his heirs were there.
So I deployed my artillery pieces as far forward as possible and started the battle (I was attacking). My artillery (catapaults) were in range so I fired upon the enemy, some spearmen that were in range. The second the projecile hit the enemy, the message "the enemy leader has been killed" came up. The shock of losing their general caused the enemy to panic and some of the peasants started to rout, causing the rest of the army to waver. I quickly ordered my entire army to charge right towards them. The final action obviously pushed the enemy army over the edge and every Turkish soldier on the map fled!
After the battle, I took over a thousand prisoners, and The Leader and his Heirs were killed! Just think that this was down to one fluke shot!
Can anyone top that story BTW?! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

That is a great story. Tell me this though, do many people use seige equipment for an invasion? If anything I would think you would hold them back for the keep seige, especially if facing superior number? Anyone had consistent (rather than lucky) results with this tactic?
I don't know why, but this seems to happen regularly with catapults. I've done it several times myself. Never used on offense, didn't think the enemy would be within range, but if they were within range for you, they ought to be for me.

No!
I have however been fighting the Turks as the Polish faction. I had about 1100 men (mainly feudal sgt. and feudal m.a.a.) and was attacked by 3500 turks. I was defending Armenia and found a nice hilltop to defend, so I curved my men into a semicircle roun the hill, with 3 units of infantry in reserve, 2 units of achers and a small band(30-40 men) of Cavalry.
The Turks charged up the very steep hill, and their leader was killed in the first melee. From then on the Turks never charged, and I was not going to leave my strong position, just to be caught in the open by Turkish cavalry. Well, I tried to provoke a charge by riding close to their Cavalry, and then pretending to break (did not press rout though) which was no help, and after 85 minutes of staring eachother down (OK, i did fast forward), I was declared the winner. This was not as boring as it soundsd though, and I probably had a pretty high adrenealin surge throughout. (I inflictet

Lol, I know EXACTLY how you feel, I'm Italy.
Quote The Alamo? Walk in the park, Battle of Nations? Just a warn up.
Turky slammed into my 600 man garrison with over 3500 troops today. I relized Turky was mostly cav so I hid in the woods and set up a perimiter. THen I stuck my 150 Clansmen i nthe trees accross the map.
4 hours later the time ran out and I was still there, 1500 Turks lay on the feild, 400 Italians. The clansmen now number only 20 something but took out 460 by themselves.
Wave after wave, on and on as far as the eye could see. I thought it would never end but still they fought on, never wavering, never running. It was horoic to say the least...
For all my armies vallient efforts however they will not last another year. The 2000 remaining troops will eat them alive. [/QUOTE]

Ummm I don't think this will count but..
I played the Imagawa clan in Shogun once.. And on my second turn I send one of my two ninja's to kill the Takeda Daimyo. I had a 7% chance. Next round, clan Takeda was no more. I was ROFLMAO by that time. It certainly gave me some dangerous rebel action nearby though.. with cavalry and all that... But that is about as lucky as I've ever been in any Total War game so far http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

what level do you guys play on?
i am currently taking losses of around 400 (out of 900) while killing/capturing around 1200 (out of around 1600) in my battles with the turkish horde
I attacked the HRE in a river battle and brought a catapult along. I decided to fire a few shots at his royal knights before attempting to cross the bridge. I killed his king in either the first shot or one of the first few shots. I charged across the bridge after shooting some more and managed to rout his army without taking much losses.

.....the story continues.
I thought they were all going to die, and prepared for the next wave of attack. I had managed to build some Miltia Sgt, and reinforced with two units. Then the eveil turk attacks again.......
.....only this time he has fewer men than me (we are going to live, yipiii!!) though 3-4 units of Kwarazmiam (that sure rolls of the tounge) Cavalry. I stand my ground, on a hill-top, and let them feel the wrath of my archers before I charge down the hill with my entire army. My Cavalry picks of a few, but my "heavily" armored infantry can't keep the pace of the lighter Turkish units (bugger), but they on the other hand have a tendency to rally (horaah) and keep coming back for another pounding (double horaah). Then the "Evil Turk" gets reinforcements, and the brave Poles re-group and sends their Heavy Cav. home to their mummies. The poles win the day, taking 140+ casualties, compared to the Turks 450+.
Reinforcements are expected next turn, and the Castle of Armenia is about to fall. Things could not look better.....
(PS. I play on "Normal")

I usually have two catapults in my attacking armies.
The reason for this is (besides amusement value; I love the little things!) that they can cause the enemy to leave a strong position.
A bridge map is a good example, as long as you deploy the catapults forward you can force the enemy to give up it's position at the end of the bridge and retreat further back, robbing him of his defensive advantage.
Besides all that the weapons cause fear, meaning the enemy units will break easier.
I've seen my own units go from 'steady' to 'wavering' after taking only 2 hits from catapults totalling about 6 casualties.

I'm playing as the Byzantines, had many battles which were 2 close 4 comfort. One which i remember vaguely was when my men amounting to 1000 fought with the egyptians which were 3500,managed to win the day in the desert where my troops were totally exhausted.Mind u they were not mercernaries.
However it was totally horrible to watch wave after wave of reinforcements assemble while my men were desperately trying to hold on to antoich.Eventually won, losing abt half of my men, while capturing abt 900+ prisoners and killing abt a 1000 odd.I executed the prisoners cos i couldn't afford the Eygptians using them again in the next battle as their armies were much more superior to mine.
Now it's 1202,i'm plaing normal. My current Byzantine Emperor John II came to power at the age of 15 when his loony father died in palestine. He has ruled 4 45 years, heh, almost as long as Basil II.Has 6 sons,2 of which r emperor material, the firstborn is a coward who is brave beyond belief.
Anyway the Elmos r now extremely powerful,
their empire stretches from arabia, the whole of africa, the iberian peninsula all the way to poland.I hold italy, greece, serbia, all of turkey and the middle east to palestine.
The elmos were my allies when i wiped out the egyptians, but recently, after fielding a strong enough navy and realising i had to attack them b4 they became unstoppable,i declared war on them, which immediately gave me a -1959 florins in my treasury after 2 years, but i managed to wipe out the majority of their fleet in 2 years and over the next 3 years finished off the rest to become master of the seas and to have a net profit 4 my empire.
It was truly a magnificent turn of events to have such a stable emperor, although he is cracked brained and traumatised,he gained magnificent builder, magnificent steward and swift justice during his ongoing reign and my empire has never been better.
