View Full Version : Should I keep "triarii" as Romans?
Should I keep Triarii (these guys which look like phalangites)? Or dispabnd them and rely on cheaper units? And should I keep the starting navy as Romans? It is damned soooooo expensive. I better ask, because the game is sooooo slow, that corroecting mistakes takes... a very long time.
Disband the navy. As the Romans, I usally keep my starting army and try to conquer southern Italy as quickly as I can. After that your economy will be fine.

short answer, triarii yes, fleets, no. :book: there's not much duty for the fleets in the begining, except making sure you get a diplomat to a few places quickly, and that should only take one ship unit.
the triarii i found helpful, as any spear unit is in conjunction with your other infantry types.
I am playing romani right now. start slowly. take out taras 1st, then re-peace with them & trade rights. they will then leave you along for a long time. then consolidate the eleutheroi places. stay away from sicily, as you are treatied with Carthage to stay away form there for awhile. a trasngresssion of more than a turn or two will trigger war with them.
the celtic tribes to the north will leave you be until you get too close to Mendoliam (or take it). I decided on a "right hook" strategy, swinging up italy and then over into what was modern-day yugoslavia (rich mining areas).
enjoy!! :juggle2:
Thank you all. Yes, the ship is good only for moving the damned diplomat somewhere, then - bye, bye, navy! :)
You should also consider to disband one of the two cavalry units (or even both). You don't have any need for cavalry the next years and the Eqvites Romani are not amongst the strongest horsemen in the game - last but not least for this price. Have one or two family members in your army to cut down routed enemies and concentrate on infantry for the fighting.
Disbanding the Camillan Triarii is of course a no-go. There are your best unit in the early game. Send them back to Rome for retraining after the conquest of Taras. These two units Triarii can be able to conquer Rhegion on their own, provided you manage to keep the fighting in the narrow streets where the enemy has to throw his units one by one on your solid wall of bronze. (You should have some Principes and Hastati with you too, just in case of...)
