View Full Version : Mongol Invasion Campaign
:book: Hey!
Got Shogun to work again, finally. Sadly, on lower graphics... but it's still the best game ever, so I figured it'd be nice do a campaign story again.
This time, not in 'story-style', but only telling the facts, etc. So, this is about the gameplay.
I always found this campaigns the hardest, probably. Hojo vs. The Mongols. I hope that they are as challenging as I recalled them to be. :book:
Enjoy! ~:)
Hi there!
This thread has become quite a mess.
I will fit the stories into spoilers below.
Enjoy!
Drisos Hojo Campaign
Turn #1:
I move the army from Chikugo to Hizen. I also move any armies in 'harbour-regions' to Hizen. There's a full stack there now.
I attack the three rebel regions with all the armies from the Hojo's neighbouring regions. Hopefully I can wipe them out right away.
All armies that weren't in a region with a harbour or a region neighbouring the rebels, are sent westward, to stop the Mongol horde from gaining more territory.
I was in big doubts about my money... finally decided to invest all in mines. Iyo, Aki, Harima, Kai, Shimotsuke and Echigo.
I don't think I can get them within a few turns, and after that, more of their fleet will arrive... so, a better income will pay off eventually, I think.
Let's take a look at the map, before we make our first stand in Hizen.
https://img218.imageshack.us/img218/7779/20521807sg2.jpg
Turn #2:
The Mongols invaded Chikugo and Buzen.. I had no units in Buzen, and in Chikugo I retreated.. the numbers were hopeles..
Kicked their ass in Hizen! Probably one of my most enjoyable battles vs. the AI as well! I had 10 ranged-fire-units, so their first wave took great losses and routed for the most part without a fight. My 2 units of CA chased most of their army off, killing loads of Korean infantry. However, Mongol Light cavalry is too fast.. eventually both units were destroyed and a few of his light cavalry units were still on the field. I had ran out of ammo, and the mongols had a second wave of a few hundred men. Plus, I didn't have anything faster than Yari Ashigaru to catch their light cavalry.
So, I sent my army into the small forest in the centre of the defender's position. I made sure my yari's faced all sides, so he'd have to charge YS head on in the forest if he wanted to win the battle. After all, his ranged fire didn't have much effect on me, taking cover in the woods. (That's why I went there..)
After a while of firing, and a few engagements between YS and korean infantry, they gave up and went home.. Killed almost 700, lost almost 200.
The battles against the rebels were much easier and simpler of course. Only in Mutsu they showed some resistance.. had a tough fight in the woods, but with superior numbers it'd be hard to lose.
Loyalty is low in Mutsu and Dewa, taxes are going to 'very low' temporarily. Money enough anyway (gained 13K from harvest!)
So, troop production started! Mostly archers and yari cavalry. This combination because of their light cavalry. They usually hit and run.. so, with enough archers I'll shoot them down, or with some timing and flanking Yari's defeat them pretty easily. Their korean infantry is very simple to chase off anyway.. the real enemy is their cavalry.
So, training 6 YC in yamashiro and shinano.. 6 SA in totomi, kai, mimasaka and satsuma. 6 YS in hitachi. 6 Ashigaru Crossbows in Tosa and Owari.
After the defeat in Hizen they don't have that frightning force anymore... and since the best defence is a good offence.. I'm going to attack. ~:)
I think I can defeat a large army of them in Chikugo later.. so let's chase them to there. Attacking Buzen now. Not sure about it, they might move in reinforcements.. but I can always retreat it they grow too many.
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/6678/31602151rj7.jpg
Turn #3:
The attack on Buzen was another succes. 960 vs. 750, of which two third koreans, I think. Simple battle, but not great in the result. I engaged a ranged war uphill, yet I had far more archers than the mongols, so I won it anyway. Anything that came near was shot down or routed.. Didn't manage to kill many of their cavalry, yet they didn't kill much either. Killed just over 400, lost just over 200.
Still moving armies to Hizen by port, the army there has grown big. I have enough armies close to attack attack this turn. With some luck I can kick them out before reinforcements arrive. :beam: Attacking Chikuezen this turn, with another 960-men army, with mainly archers, all the cav I could find, and a few YS.
https://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5450/71257269bp3.jpg
Turn #4:
Battle went well. I stayed at my side of the hield, some of my SA even on the high ground... the ranged war went better this time. My archers were never in danger of anything but their ranged fire. When my SA ran out of ammo I chased their leftover away with some cavalry. However, their reinforcements were still there... my cavalry was destroyed when I wasn't paying attention, and I had no ammunition left for my SA. Suprisingly, three units of Ashigaru Crossbowmen held off their reinforcements by ranged fire only... foolish mongols, I think if they had charged instead of fired with their cav... they might have won. Anyway... killed almost 600, lost almost 400.
Well, seems like I exchanged bad news for other bad news. Revolt in Mutsu. And not just a revolt. Seems like a 12-unit stack or so. Not healthy... I have almost nothing for the defence. I thought The loyalty would improve slowly... but it only went down. Even with Very Low taxes and a few hundred men there, they are revolting. :S Well... Mutsu is lost, for now. I'm now moving troops over to the north as soon as possible. Before they conquer useful economical or trooptraining regions.
Attacking Chikugo now. I'm expecting more Mongol Hordes next turn. In Hizen and Nagato I have defensive armies... yet in Chikuezen and Buzen, I have almost nothing. Aw well...
https://img110.imageshack.us/img110/3656/15826415bg4.jpg
Turn #5:
Ouch. Indeed, reinforcements arrived. Almost full stacks in Hizen and Nagato, a half stack in Buzen, and a small stack in Chikuezen. Of course I have armies in those four regions, but they might not be strong enough to keep the mongols out. If not, I'll have years more of trouble.
First battle: Attacking Chikugo. I have slightly more men. I deploy all archers at the river bank, and send one YS as bait. After a few times of running forward and backward the YS unit, I've shot down most of his infantry. A few more times, and my YS is almost destroyed and routs. Seems like their cavalry weren't going to take the bait, so I move to the other bank. Killed a few of his cavalry units, and the rest decided to flee. Total victory, because they have nowhere to go and will be disbanded. Killer over 700, lost about 350.
Second battle: Defending Buzen. I'm outnumbered. Good chance that Buzen will kill my efforts to kick them out this turn. I deploy deep in a forest almost on the border. To minimum losses by ranged fire, and to be able to flee soon if needed, and because YS defeat their cavalry's easy in the forest.. However, I still didn't stand a chance. Their Cavalry killed only very slowly by their arrows, but there was no way I could come out of the forest and attack them. They'd just hit-and-run me to death.. Eventually some korean infantry showed up, and by fighting them, two of my units almost left the forest. They were shot down and routed. The rest, demotived by ranged fire and seeing their friends rout, soon followed. (h0 mostly.. so it wasn't a surprise.)
Third battle: Defending Hizen. Outnumbered 2 to 3. May be winnable. Once Again I deploy in the forest. Sadly I had to send lots of archers to the attack in Chikugo. Because of that I'm in trouble with the defence against their reinforcements. I deploy my 1 SA unit not too deep in the forest, my ashigaru's and general to the back, (they shoudln't be used in fight too soon) and two YC to the sides at the back of the forest. Finally, one YS unit is deployed in front.. as 'cannon fodder'.
Ok, gah! Mission totally failed. The enemy appears to have 75% percent korean infantry.. so this won't work. They just walk onto me, I form a line and the two lines engage... my men rout very soon. I was suprised. My honour levels weren't that low.. and I wasn't attacked from the flank or the rear, and I wasn't even outnumbered that badly. Btw, seems like cavalry don't make short work of korean skirmishers... that actually lose, lol. Weird stuff. Ok, major loss. Killed just over 100, lost 300.
My deploy. Using woods for this kind of turtling is something I only recently tried out. Works nice now and then... failed today, too bad. But I still like the idea and will use it now and then.
https://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3486/deployhizenwd7.jpg
Fourth battle: Defending Nagato. Glad I have some ranged units there. Full stack vs. full stack. This may be the most important one for today.
Ha! This went loads better. Deployed on a hill just left to the centre. 7 ranged units in front, YS and YA behind. In an attempt to neutralize their skirmishers on the left flank I rush in some YS and my cavalry units. After a short fight I cause a chain rout on their army.. only their light cavalry continues the ranged war with my archers. With three cavalry units I chase their infantry. Their cavalry doesn't bother helping their routed units, so I kill loads. Some rallied and routed later again, I destroyed 4 units to the last man with that. Their mongol light cavalry routs a while later, my archers were doing better on the hill, of course. Plus, I had better numbers. Pity though that their mongol cavalry routed through my cavalry. I know no way to stop this: they kill loads while routing. I've seen a single mongolian kill 6 of my cavalry in a row. Ridiculous. I guess it isn't possible to mod this 'bug' out? Anyone knows a solution for routing mongolian cav? They're far stronger when routing than they are normal. :S Anyway, killed almost 800, lost almost 200.
Of course, in the North I had to abadon Mutsu. Outnubered almost 5 to 1. My armies in the regions surrounding mutsu aren't half as big as their army, but in a few more turns I'll gather more troops so that it will be nearly impossible for them to attack other regions, and I can start thinking of reconquering Mutsu. Btw, need to keep an eye on Echigo as well... how come the loyalty is so surprisingly low in this campaign? Taxes are still on 75%... :S
Situation in the south doesn't look that bad yet. Armies in Chikuezen, Nagato, Bungo and Chikugo seem like they can make a pretty tough defense now. I think I'll be attacking Buzen again next turn. Hizen will be harder. Their force there is pretty large... Seems like I have enough koku for now... so I build an archery dojo in both Aki and Harima, where I had castles but no troop-training stuff. I'll need more troops on the coastline soon, I'm afraid. Btw, some more good news. My daimyo finally arrived at the front. With him is Takazaki Suenaga. So, two generals that will add +2 honour. This will help, I think.
map:
https://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1659/30792825bk2.jpg
Turn #6:
Gah! I could have guessed. The mongols attack Chikuezen from both sides. I better should've moved in some more troops from Chikugo. Well, it's not that bad. Numbers are almost 3 to 4. We'll see.
Once again, I use a forest for my deploy. It's on a hill too, so my position should give an advagtage. I have 2 ranged units, position them left to the forest, guarded by 1 unit of YC. All YS and YA in the forest.
Again, they have brought a lot of infantry, and few cavalry. My initial ranged fire kills over 100 enemies. Then I have to protect my archers and rush in 2 YS, 2 YA, and my YC. The battles goes well, and I almost get a mass rout... Yet some of them still fought, and of course my h0 YA decided to run away... My YC was chashing routing infantry, but got caught by other infantry. One pleasant surprise though, one unit of YA actually defeated a unit of mongol light cavalry. I was astonished. Mine were h0. They had slight height-advantage, but still... I hadn't except them to defeat and rout mongol light cavalry. I get my two YS back in the forest, and pray that my YC will reorganize. Losses are almost equal now, still a good chance on winning this one.
Gah, appearantly I shouldn't have said that. Don't know why, but my remaining forces in the forest routed by the sight of their infantry coming. I have no clue why... I must be underestimating the impact on morale of seeing friends routing. Gah! Lost Chikuezen again. Though, kill ratio is ok: killed almost 300, lost almost 200.
Ha, in the north the rebels are trying to expand. They invade Hitachi with 132 men, I have 120. Should be simple. Though important. Hitachi is my of my troop-training regions. If I lose it dealing with the rebels will be lots harder.
I have 2 units of YS. At long distance I can recognize the enemy units. Ranged only. So again, I take cover deep in a forest.Their ranged fire kills only 20. Then, one unit comes close to the forest. I made a run for it, and caught it. Directly after I went after the other units. They were tired, so I caught them as well, and soon all routed. Killer almost 100, lost almost 50. Most important, I defended Hitachi.
Gah! This loyalty system is getting ridiculous. Echizen is red again. Moving in an army now tough, but might be too late. And worse, even Dewa red. While there was a 200-300 men army there. And remember, taxes are still 75%. I don't understand one bit of this. The way I recall the loyalty values is very different than this. Btw, Sado is yellow. Sado was never of any other clan then mine. And taxes are 75%. Combine those three and you have... something impossible? Really, I don't understand. When and where will these loyalty problems stop? Gah, gah, gah...
Still seems like I have more than enough money. I build 3 more castles. Inaba, Echizen and Dewa.
Oki, back to the south. Mongols have about 3 half stacks in their three regions. Time to attack again. Going for Buzen and Hizen same time now.
https://img174.imageshack.us/img174/121/61566681fb4.jpg
Turn #7:
Ok, first is, attack on Buzen. They deployed in the forest, which is on a hill. I take my time and slowly move to their flank. Taking rest now and then to prevent fatigue. Eventually they leave their position to attack me. Their ranged fire is unorganized and weak. And his infantry combes one by one, instead of all at once. I easily defeat them using only 1 YS and 1 YC. However, a really good result is prevented by their cavalry. They charged, routed, routed through my archers and YC. One unit of YC was trying to block them. Lost 20, killed 5, with that. Ridiculous. I'm getting really pissed by the routing mongolian cav... The way they kill is ridiculous. Ah well... still, numersa are ok. Killed over 400, lost almost 100.
They retreat Hizen. That wasn't my plan. Now they have quite a large force in Chikuezen, which may be hard to defeat. I actually took less troops into Hizen because I was afraid of them retreating. So, plan failed.
Going well in the north. My army arrived in Echizen. May be in time to prevent revolts. Dewa is green again, and my forces have grown so much that the rebels can't expand anymore.
Archer dojo's finished in Aki and Harima. I fill up every training region with 6 units again.
Oki, arranged an attack on Chikuezen. Combining troops the best troops from 4 regions into a full stack.
https://img84.imageshack.us/img84/5546/96141337ay3.jpg
Turn #8:
Lol, weird stuff. The mongols aren't going to defend Chikuezen, - they're attacking! :S
First battle, defending Bungo: Almost equal numbers. I deploy as far to the east as possible, and when battle starts I deploy on the huge hill there. This time the mongols charged right away with their cavalry. But a very units of YS and some cav won easily. Pity tough, again, they routed through my units... Painful. However, what's left of their army is easily shot up and chased down. Simple battle. Killed 350, lost almost 150.
Ok, so I won. Win in Hizen now, and the campaign is probably over. Their leftover forces won't be a problem in attacking Chikuezen, I think. So... this one is important.
Deploying different than in my past battles in Hizen this time. I choose a hill to the Southeast, which is big enough for my 6 units of SA.
Gah, plan failed. Simple though. They run forward and engage.. and have more melee manpower then me. After a while of fighting here and there my line breaks and it causes a mass rout. Killed well over 100, lost over 200.
No army to defende Chikuezen, so I conquered it. They only have Hizen now. Not a large army, so I'm going to counterattack right away.
In the north, things are calm. No revolts coming up, building up forces slowly, so Mutsu can be attacked soon.
My three castles were ready. Time for three more archery dojo's.
https://img150.imageshack.us/img150/3702/82271392ii5.jpg
Turn #9:
Gah! More reinforcements. Izumo, almost full stack. I have almost no troops there, so I'll have to give the region away. Even if I win in Hizen now I'm far from done.
Ok, the Hizen battle. I almost outnumber them 2 to 1. So, I should win.
Hmm. I was a bit too hasty on the battle. I knew I was going to win anyway, etc. Wasn't motivated enough to micro-manage. Still an easy win though. Most of my kills weren by arrows. The rest routed. Killed over 400 lost almost 250. Of course, their remaining troops are gone as well. Again I had cavalry routing through my troops.
I start building a yari dojo in hizen now.
In Southern Honshu, there's decent armies in Hoki, Bingo and Iwami already. Expanding from Izumo will be hard. But attack it might be harder. They'll probably have mongolian heavy cavalry and such. But I think neither side winning or losing terrain is good as well. After all, I can expand in income and army size easier, because I own all of japan. Speaking of which... attacking Mutsu again now:
https://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6456/9afl1.jpg
and southern honshu:
https://img216.imageshack.us/img216/8139/10074695ub9.jpg
hmmm, looking at it again, the army in Hoki seems not that decent after all. aw well... I don't look forward to attacking Izumo anyway. will be nice to defeat their army partially in defending in stead of attacking.
Turn #10:
Oki, conquering Mutsu now. Advantage in numers: 3 to 2. Ideal scenario is causing a mass rout. The less we have to fight, the better, because they have nowhere to run to, anyway.
I use the classic formation for my army: archers in first line, infantry in second, cavalry on the flanks.
As expected, the rebels deploy on the big hill close to the edge of the map. I take my time, slowly move to their right flank. If I get on the hill too they won't have the advantage...
Gah... well, I'm not sure to be happy with the result. Killed over 600, lost almost 350. Didn't mange to cause that mass-rout. :( As planned I positioned at their flank. Of course the reaction was turning towards me and starting ranged fire. Didn't kill many though. I sent my cavalry round their now exposed left flank, which was very succesful. Only engaged two SA, but the main point was that their infantry was wandering around instead of attacking my archers/infantry. I hoped to mass rout them later by a charge from two sides (infantry at the front, cavalry at the back). It worked partially, but a few units put up hell of a resistance, a few YC units got caught in battle with their YS general unit. Though completely surrounded it fought to the death instead of routing.. that has cost me a lot.
Well, good news, we're back in control of Mutsu. +600 denarii...
Now let's kick some mongols again. :) They didn't attack Hoki, which I expected. Too bad. Well, only thing is do is attack. In my experience I know no remedy for monoglian heavy cavalry. I'm not even expecting to win the upcoming battle, yet I will try to make as many kills as possible. I'll take lots of archers. They've become a sort of insurance for many kills for me lately.
So, invading Izumo now...:
https://img82.imageshack.us/img82/9271/10tl5.jpg
Turn #11:
Looks good. 950 vs. over 600. My army is mainly SA and YC. Good weather, first though is 'go go go', but just as I hit the 'attack' button, something came to mind. Thunderbombers! They probably is/are one ore more units of them in this army. And I recall how dangerous they can be. (Seen them kill others units for 90% with just 1 good volley) Well... I'll just have to make sure they won't be able to get a clean shot...
I'll keep writing while fighting this battle. ~:) Text may seem strange because of that.
Ah! I thought Izumo would be new for me, but I've fought here before, for sure.
Using classic lineup again. From far distance I count 2 or 3 units of thunderbombers. Scary. See some skirmishers and heavy cavalry too. Did I already mention this was going to be tough? :S
Gah, well the closer I get the worse it seems. Their infantry has moved to a forest on my right flank, while their cavalry has positioned in the northwest(from my point of view). 6 units of heavy cavalry.(!) I have no clue how to beat those. Well, we'll see.
Taking long pauses between walks to decrease fatigue. I've moved back to the center and then forward, taking the same hill his cavalry is on. They allow it. I'll keep taking higher ground till they get within firing range.
Hmm. Appears they also had some korean melee infantry and 1 unit of light cavalry in the woods, near their heavy cavalry. I killed the korean infantry to the last man with my cavalry. Now pushing forward to shoot down their light cavalry..
Hmm, again. seems like I wasn't paying attention. Another unit appears in to have been hiding in that forest. Thunderbombers. Their light cavalry have back off for now, so I'll start shooting these guys.
Hmmm, that went fine. Thunderbombers and light cavalry within shooting range at the same time. The cavalry tried a charge. (Fools! With 40 men at my entire army. They rout, and I send my cavalry to finish his thunderbombers. His heavy cav still leaning back, and no sign of the rest of his infantry.
Oki, went well, thunderbombers got in one half shot, killed 15-20 cavalry, but then they were soon slain to the last man. Taking another rest now, before moving on. Correction, no their skirmishers are approaching. (Why are they sending suicide missions one by one? :S) They'll be short work for a cav charge.
Indeed, short work. Lost 2, killed all. Next suicide mission is the thunderbombers that initially hade been hiding in the same forest with that skirmishers. This time, lost 0, killed all. Last up is another unit of thunderbombers. If I'm not mistaking I'll only have to deal with their heavy cavalry once I've taken care of that unit.
This one managed to throw a few bombs. Killed only 4 though. Their unit was of course down to the last man. Now lets rest some more and push forward to get into firing ranged with those heavy cavalry units. I'm not sure to be happy about his position. At the back of the forest in the corner of the map. I'm sending my yari samurai in the forest now. They should get a great advantage from that. Downside is that my archers can't kill many.
Hmmm. AI is acting overly suicidal this battle. They don't react at all. I have used up any arrow that my archers had brought, killing about half of their cavalry. Still, they don't react. Time for a massive charge.
Total victory! They may be strong, but not that strong. Trapped in the forest, completely outnumbered, they were actually quite simple to defeat. Of course, if the AI would've handled this battle in a normal way, things would've been different.
Here's the final charge:
https://img82.imageshack.us/img82/4201/11ain8.jpg
So, total victory! Managed to kick out the rebels just in time, hehe. :P
Sasaki Kojiro Hojo Campaign
Drisos you made me reinstall shogun :wall:
:2thumbsup:
I'll add my campaign here (expert, normal settings etc). First I have to say I'd forgotten how awesome the ashigaru crossbowman are:
https://img231.imageshack.us/img231/6996/mongolcampaignoneoh3.png
See all the dead bodies ~D
This was defense of Buzen first round. I put my archers, YS, and YA in the woods and the crossbowmen on the hill (as you can see). I'd concentrate all fire on a single unit and rout it, starting a chain rout. The morale truly is the weakness of the mongol troops. Of course since I couldn't chase them down they kept coming back and getting shot again. Good battle.
They invaded Chikugo, but I'd foolishly left only three units there, trying to concentrate some force in Higo. I figured taking it back would be bloody so I sacraficed the three units there. Killed 110 lost 180. I figured I'd be looking at a worse ratio assaulting it.
Defense of Hizen was a fun battle. Ashigaru crossbowmen did well. Like Drisos I concentrated my main force in the woods at the center position. I was foolish with my cavalry archers though, didn't realize I'd need them to chase the enemy down. The enemy rallied at least 8 times and had fresh reinforcements at one point, but they never charged en masse and I was able to focus on individual units and rout them.
The three ronin provinces were taken without consequence. I built a few troops port provinces.
https://img100.imageshack.us/img100/918/mongolcampaigntwojr5.png
Attack! I think the selected unit ended up being sent to Chikugo instead. Chikugo I thought would be tough but ended up easy. They had 5-6 infantry and 5-6 light cav. I had 5 archers, 5 ys, 1 ya, 1 crossbow, 1 yari cav. I sent the ashi units over as bait, they routed, sent them again. Shot down 1.5 infantry units in the process. Sent my yari cav over and ran them in a big loop around the enemy. They chased with three units. Sent the yari same over and engaged the three remaining infantry. Sent the archers in behind. Yari cav finished their loop, wove through a couple mongol units and slammed into the back of the enemy line. Rout.
Second defense of Hizen. Enemy engaged in archery war. Enemy lost badly. This time used CA to chase effectively. My general was rank 2 now which made it easy.
Assault on Chikuzen. Outnumbered them three to one. Easy victory.
https://img170.imageshack.us/img170/2342/mongolcampainactualthretn0.png
This scared me. Thought that reinforcements were on there way. But I got the victory screen next turn.

Oh dear. Seems like I forgot to save my game yesterday. I'm back at Turn 4... Annoying. But good news is, I might actually win in Chikuezen this time! I'll add the old version of Turn4 in a spoiler, btw.
*****
Turn #4:
Indeed, I did better in battle this time.
*****
Turn #4:
Gah! I actually lost in Chikuezen. (!) :wall: The ranged war was going fine.. yet, on the right flank his korean inf refused to rout, so they engaged. I used 1 YS, 1 YC and 1 SA against 2 units of Korean Spearmen.. and they actually won.. probably by the backup of their cavalry.. Just before my unit routed, I sent my YS, bad timing, too late to help, and they routed at the sight of their friends routing.. it seems. With no Yari's left, they actually did what's best.. charge with all cav at my archers.. easy pray. I routed a few of them and chased some inf down with a unit of cav that didn't engage, but the battles was over. Killed almost 300, but lost over 700. Painful!
But... good news, their numbers are still decreasing. I'm attacking Chikuezen again! Attacking Chikugo the same time, this time. I'm afraid though that their reinforcements might show up next turn.. we'll see. I left an army in Nagato to defend if necessary..

May I have some more please? :laugh4:
Sorry, I'm back at my parents home now. I'll probably finish the campaign monday or tuesday.
Sorry for taking so long. I had to find a decent amount of time to play all those battles. Nice turn though. I can't finish the campaign tonight.. but I'll have some more time this week. Ah well, a campaign lasting longer then 5 turns may be more intresting anyway. :laugh4: ~;)
***
Turn #5:
Uff da! A couple tough losses there, especially in Hizen. At least things went well in Chikugo and Nagato, though.
Losing Mutsu definitely stings! Here's hoping you can retake it before long. :sweatdrop:
And a Dutch copy of the game? Never seen that before!
Anyway, good luck fighting those Mongols back to the mainland, Drisos!
Turn #6:

Next one will be tough... :book:
:2thumbsup:
Turn #11:
Looks good. 950 vs.

I don't recall winning this one on expert before. In fact, I do recall giving up on beating the mongols several times, so I'm happy that I made it this time.
Any comments/tips/idea's/strategies/whatever? ~:)
Hmmm, hard choice for my next campaign. I could try as the mongols. But I don't like the idea of Japan losing to Mongolia because of me. :embarassed: Hmmm, back to Sengoku Jidai, then. ~:)

Victory in under 3 years. Impressive Drisos. I don't recall if I ever played MI as the Hojo. You played quite aggressively which is the way to go. I don't know if I could have played that aggressively though. I think I'd be more defensive being somewhat intimidated by the Mongol cavalry.
Good game! Thanks for posting it.

What bugs me is that you have no control over your reinforcements. Time, place, numbers, unit types, etc., are all determined by the game. I'm sure that many simply look upon that as a challenge and enjoy it as such, but personally it drives me nuts!
Ah Martok, that irritates me too, especially on bridge battles where the enemy reinforcements would just appear on my side of the map - a place their original force strived to get to!
It would've been nice, yeah..

I've won the mongol campaign at least three times on the hard difficulty, never tried it on expert though. Personally I don't find it that difficult if you get off to a good start. I usually attack with the mongol units and defend with the korean ones where possible.

Gah! Playing as the Mongols is enough to tax one's sanity. I gave up on them after my first few attempts. :wall:
All of the mongol troops are good though, and their cavalry is simply devestating.
Yes, they are good.
All mongol forces are ashigaru though, that means that they are more prone to routing. Of course, the MHC (Mongol Heavy Cavalry) doesn't rout quickly. It has a high morale and very good combat.
The infantry isn't as though as the Japanese one. The cavalry is far superior, the infantry is less good. It's far from worthless though and can deal a blow.
The thunderbomber can be devastating and Korean skirmishers are best on hold/hold imho.
A tactic that usually works is to deploy your infantry out of harms way, skirmishers on hold at the front, deploy the MHC behind that or on the flank and send the MLC (Mongol Light Cavalry) forward to sting, provoke and wear out.
Remember that the MLC is a fast unit that can do decent melee too, hit and run charges on missiles work great.
March the infantry/MHC body up after some minutes. The skirmishers will throw their javelins and the Japanese will attack. Move the MHC around and backstab.
Sasaki Kojiro

My tactic is generally:
Make a line of infantry with a line of cavalry in front
When you get close to enemy, charge the cavalry into some ranged units
charge the infantry in behind targetting their yari samurai
If you time it right the ranged units rout just as your infantry is hitting the flanks of theirs. Instant rout, chase them down and kill them. It helps that the mongol heavy cav can probably rout a unit of yari samurai on their own.
The rebellions are what bug me most. I'm the frickin mongols, can't I slaughter a few cities and scare everyone into accepting our rule?

Wow, that's one short campaign!

Short and sweet ~:)
Drisos, as I recall there's a "bug" where routing units get a charge bonus. Since mongol cav have a good charge they can indeed cut you up.
I wonder if your mutsu problems were a result of moving your daimyo over to kyushu. I think distance from daimyo is factored in. I didn't move mine over there in my campaign, also I assaulted the castle right away.
I played a mongol campaign before this one, but it's not as fun. I enjoy slaughtering the hojo with my cavalry and the thunder bombers/skirmirshers are cool but the campaign has some annoying features. Rebellion after rebellion, reinforcements arriving randomly. My first year of reinforcements was a single unit of mongol heavy cav. My second was a single unit of korean guardsman. Bizarre since I'd looted plenty. Ended up autocalcing to a finish. While I was fighting in Shinano I got three stacks of reinforcements in Hizen :wall:
Oh well, the hojo campaign is a lot of fun.
:dizzy2:
I thought my campaign went quite well, but now you kick them within a year! :dizzy2: :embarassed: Very impressive to beat three full stacks in just a few battles! :2thumbsup: :book:
I wonder, why are the Ashigaru's Crossbowmen so good? They fire slower it seems, but if you use up their ammo they've killed more than when you do with a unit of SA. :dizzy2:
I recall loads of rebellions too, in the mongol campaign. Indeed the people probably didn't like mongols. But, the mongols would've simply slaughtered the entire population to make sure no one rebelled.. :skull:
I'll go try it sometime. Yet, will have to wait for a week or so.
Sasaki Kojiro

Well, if you'd chosen to defend buzen and hadn't gotten that mutsu rebellion you might have done so as well.
Very cool, Sasaki. I congratulate you on your victory over the invaders! ~

That's precisely what I was referring to when I said I don't like playing as the Mongols. Reinforcements are too unpredictable -- you never know what you'll get, nor how much. (I'd actually forgotten about all the rebellions til you mentioned them just now.)
Ok. Going for a Mongols vs. Hojo campaign now. Wish me luck! :book:
Here's the story.
- The Mongol Horde vs. Hojo
- Expert.
- Conquer all regions.
- Standard unit size: 60.
- Morale, fatigue, restricted camera and limited ammunition on.
- Time limit off.
Turn #1:
The Hojo do a desperate attempt to defend Chikuezen. Well... they don't stand a chance of course. I used only my 8 units of Light Cavalry actually. Lost 27, killed 552. Very easy win. Two of my units gain +1 honour.
Attacking Hizen now. Would be nice to take it, because it will keep them from sending in reinforcements by port. It will slow their reinforcements. :balloon2: Oh, btw, I'm leaving korean spear guys at home, don't want to give the Hojo extra armies by rebellion already..
https://img134.imageshack.us/img134/1576/m1sa4.jpg
Turn #2:
Of course, some reinforcements arrived in Hizen while I attacked. Outnumbered 2 to 1. Should still be winnable though. I only need to rout them. The rest will probably we trapped in the castle. ~:)
Used the same tricks as used in Chikuezen. Attack lonely YS units from three sides, charge lonely SA and AC and YA. My Cavalry does all the work. Eventually the leftovers of his army mass rout and I chase down the remaining units. I regroup in the centre of the map, and take a rest while Hojo reinforcements arrive.
Their second wave is defeated very easily. Some YS try to engage, but they rout after a volley of my skirmishers. My cavalry once again chases loads of them down. Another easy win. Killed 977, lost 102.
My general is now 2 star. Good news. ~:) Most of my remaining cavalry now has h3. ~:)
Invading Chikugo now. Loyalty in Hizen and Chikuezen seems fine.
https://img227.imageshack.us/img227/3097/m2ik8.jpg
Turn #3:
The battle in Chikugo was another easy one. They had more men, but their general messed up. They allowed us to cross the bridge unharmed. Then I moved my cavalry to the sides of their army. It split up, making it simple for me to attack YS units from front and behind the same time, instantly routing them. Killed 207, almost all. Lost 11.
The Hojo don't have defensive armies ready. But problem is, if I keep expanding now I'll have too few troops to keep loyalty high enough. I'll have to wait for reinforcements... :embarassed:
Moving 1 korean spear unit to Chikugo for loyalty purposes..
https://img141.imageshack.us/img141/93/m3wk2.jpg
Turn #4:
Gah. Boring. Nothing happens.
Castle in Hizen is now conquered.
Switching the stronger Hizen army for the loyalty-keeping Chikuezen army.
https://img137.imageshack.us/img137/4395/m4az3.jpg
Turn #5:
Ha! Reinforcements. In Hizen, Buzen, Nagato and Iwami. In Buzen the Hojo give up. Nagato and Iwami didn't even have a single Hojo unit. So, new territoy. Moving some from Nagato into Iwami, some from Buzen into Nagato, the reinforcements from Hizen to Chikugo. I'm attacking Bungo with the army from Chikugo, and some from Chikuezen and Buzen. Looking good for now, though in some time numerous Hojo reinforcements should arrive.
https://img80.imageshack.us/img80/736/m5hu8.jpg
Turn #6:
Ah! The Hojo attacked Buzen. Yet, the fight in Bungo was resolved first. So if I win in Buzen, it'll be seppuku for all of them. :balloon2: (I won easily in Bungo, they decided to retreat when I came close. Managed to catch one unit of AC, killed 57, lost 0.)
Gah! Too simple. They only bring 4 ranged units. My 3 light cavalry units make short work of those. Killed 227, lost 10.
No further attacks planned right now. Maybe next turn.
https://img100.imageshack.us/img100/9106/m6xf9.jpg
Turn #7:
Lots of reinforcements are arriving in Aki. I send some troops from Nagato to Iwami, but still It will be hard to hold if they attack. Let's hope for reinforcements from my side as well...
Attacking Higo now. Overall loyalty still seems ok.
https://img225.imageshack.us/img225/4452/m7kl4.jpg
Turn #8:
Attacking Higo was very simple. The Hojo didn't keep their army together, making it very easy to rout single units by attacking from the rear. This way I killed almost the entire army. Killed 298 (2 of them survived), lost 7.
The Hojo attacked Iwami, as I expected. I'm not sure what to do. It's about 600 vs. 1500. It could be done, but it's hard.
Ah, I won! ~:) Again, Mongol Cavalry did most of the work. I lost pretty much of them though. Ah well, lets hope we get some new from reinforcements. ~:)
Battle result:
https://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1869/m8ajl0.jpg
Best not attack more right now. Enough trouble with loyalty already. :sweatdrop:
https://img219.imageshack.us/img219/2674/m8hv6.jpg
Turn #9:
Ah. Reinforcements at last. In Nagato and Iwami. Including my first thunderbombers and Heavy Cavalry! :book: I can now make a pretty rough defense in Iwami. :whip:
Attacking Satsuma now. It's a troop training region so will be good to take it.
https://img219.imageshack.us/img219/38/m9yc9.jpg
That translation seems a bit silly ~;)
Still, killing over 1400 - impressive!
Turn #10:
The Hojo gave up on Satsuma.
Time for the bad news. Sudden loyalty drop on the southern island. I'm retreating from Satsuma, in an attempt to prevent revolts in all other regions. (I'll give up on Satsuma for now. I destroyed the dojo's now anyway.)
More bad news, lots of Hojo reinforcements arrived in Bingo.

Btw, Wasp, on the dutch copy. I have Warlord Edition, and bought it in a Free Record Shop. Probably somewhere in 2003 or so.
(Misschien dat 'Genomen hoofden' nogal vreemd klinkt als je er niet aan gewend bent? :beam: )
Turn #11:
Ok, lost Satsuma, but loyalty seems a lot better. Attacking Hyuga now.

Mongols rock on defense ~D
You might want to burn that port in aki when you can.
:beam: )
Hehe, I bought an English version of Warlords (or Gold? Should check the box), but I had never seen a Dutch version before :beam:
Turn #12:
Easy battle in Hyuga. They retreated when I came close. I was fast enough to catch a unit of YA though. Killed 59, lost 2.
Seems like loyalty is going to be fine next turn. However, I cannot expand without more reinforcements. Does loyalty ever get gradually better in this campaign? :dizzy2:
Btw, following Sasaki's advice: I attack Aki. Cav only, lol. ~:) Will be nice to burn the port. Daddy Khan may send some more reinforcements in return. :balloon2:
https://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2876/m12er4.jpg
Turn #13:
Gah. I retreated in Aki. They sent in reinforcements by sea, and I was outnumbered over 3:1... :embarassed: I'll just sit and wait till they meet their death in attacking Iwami.
Loyalty looking ok again. I wonder what does actually trigger reinforcements? If it's conquering, I see no way to win this campaign... I don't have much possibilities to expand right now. :sweatdrop:
Well... I'll just play on and see what happens.
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/2812/m13tf8.jpg
Turn #14:
Acidentally Skipped. Nothing happened though.
Turn #15:
Loyalty looks good! Somewhere soon I might actually start getting troops out of regions like Hizen, Chikugo, etc. ~:)
So, time to attack... Satsuma again. With 4 units of Light cavalry. Should be easy. After that I'll get Osumi and if loyalty stays this well I can move almost my entire armies to Bungo and to the Western front. (Nagato+Iwami)
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/2546/m15ft0.jpg
Turn #16:
The Hojo give up in Satsuma. They're trapped in the castle now. ~:)
The Hojo aren't moving around a lot in the east. Seems like 60 new men arrive in Aki each turn. They have more than enough men for an attack on Iwami, but they're just standing there, doing nothing. :dizzy2:
https://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7616/m16oz5.jpg
Turn #17:
Gah, I wish I could write more then a few lines each turn. But it's just, nothing at all is happening. :embarassed: There's no action. :wall:
Good news though. reinforcements arrived. In Iwami. The Iwami army is now a full stack. A very strong army. Yet, I hope not too strong, it would be nice if the Hojo attacked me instead of the other way around.
https://img88.imageshack.us/img88/8960/m17nm1.jpg
Turn #18:
Loyalty is going up and down. I don't dare to invade Osumi yet. Only moving troops around now... The castle in Satsuma was conquered, btw. ~:)
https://img88.imageshack.us/img88/8383/m18pn6.jpg
Turn #19:
Things went better, so, invading Osumi now.
You can see that his forces in Aki have grown quite much over the last turns. :embarassed: I wonder if my strategy is too defensive. Maybe it's good, because he's losing terrain (and thereby; income) and his forces are increasing. He might actually start running out of money if this continues for a while?
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/3006/m19ry4.jpg
Turn #20:
Starting to move my Cavalry in Kyushu to Bungo. Even in Igo, the Hojo have quite an army now. It'll take more than just a few units to win there.
Loyalty stuff is going well.
Still both sides don't dare to move in the West.
https://img87.imageshack.us/img87/7780/m20lg9.jpg
Gah!! It's tense standoffs like this that help make this game so great. An interesting game of "Chicken", as it were.... :sweatdrop:
Turn #21:
Yeah! Some action at last. They attack Iwami. 870 vs. 2535. Should be winnable though.
My deploy:
first line thunderbombers and skirmishers
second line korean melee inf
third line mongolian light cavalry
heavy cavalry on the flanks.
https://img135.imageshack.us/img135/8488/m21aop3.jpg
Looking good on the hill. :cool2:
...
They close in until my light cavalry start firing. Sadly they didn't come close enough to let my korean ranged units take a shot.. aw well. After some engagements on the flanks with my heavy cav, his leftover army is a chaos, and there's not much to stop my cavalry. So, I rush in my light cavalry. Now all of his 1st wave is routing. Chasing them down now. I might retreat my Heavy Cav to keep them from tiring too much. There'll be 2 more waves maybe.
https://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2168/m21blv7.jpg
Luckily, their reinforements are a mess. One-by-one slaughter instead of a second wave. Tried to take a screen of thunderbombers firing on some... kinda missed.
https://img136.imageshack.us/img136/5463/m21ccb3.jpg
Trying to keep my army together. I'm losing way too much this battle. Expensive losses! A unit of CA routed through my thunderbombers, leaving only 9 alive. I lost lots of HC agains the first wave. And CA and other ranged are going to take some kills in the last stage of battle probably.
Here I just sent a unit of HC to kill another of those lonely reinforcement units..
https://img147.imageshack.us/img147/3481/m21dkg6.jpg
...
Still destroying units one by one... here my thunderbombers take a good shot at a unit of YS. ~:) This screen was timed better. ~:)
https://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8274/m21efi7.jpg
...
Victory at last! I had a comp crash two days ago, had to reinstall STW. Because of that, time limit was on. (Btw, another thing, I forget to patch to 1.02. Now I have cavalry units with over 48 men. I'm afraid that might cause trouble if I went back to 1.02. So I'll finish this campaign on v1.0.)They ran out of time. I killed pretty much all of their army though. Should give me some space in the West for now.
Results:
https://img135.imageshack.us/img135/4011/m21fzc0.jpg
Attacking Aki now, with 2 Light and 2 Heavy Cavalry. I hope they don't invade Iwami this turn too, that would make things problematic. Main goal is to destroy the port and gain the money from that. I'm not sure If I'll hold on to Aki for now. Will have to keep looking at loyalty.

Ahem. Sneaky Drisos! Editing your post, eh? For those wondering what I've been smoking with my "AND???!!!" post, when I read the Turn #21 post, it ended at "There'll be 2 more waves maybe." I was on the edge of me seat and BAM, the post ended in mid-battle.
Nice battle though! Let's hope for more reinforcements.
Ah, sorry Gregoshi. ~;p I usually write my post during the turn, in this case, during battle. Pause+Write > Play > Pause+Write, etc. ~;) I hit the 'submit' button a bit too early, so it took an edit to finish the post. ~;)
*****
Turn #22:
Wow! This attack on Aki had surprisingly cool effect! :2thumbsup: Their Daimyo moved into Aki, making the battle 240 vs. 313. I must say that my cavalry was devastating in this battle! The Hojo moved to my deploy on a small hill (while they were defending!), I started firing. The only units that approached were a YS unit and a YA unit. His daimyo and ranged units stayed behind. I attack both Yari units from front and rear the same time, after some movement. Both rout, and his Hamamoto moves in. I managed to do the same to that one. The die surprisingly soon, including Mr. Hojo himself. The leftover Ashigaru Crossbowmen are an easy prey for my cavalry... I even manage to kill most of their CA unit with my light cavalry. ~:) Killed 303, lost 23. This conquer gave me a nice amount of koku too. ~:) Going well, I'd say. ~:)
So, their Daimyo is killed. I wonder, how much heirs does he have? And most of all, where is Takazaki Suenaga? He was in western Honshu before the attack on Iwami. I recall that I killed the attacking general in Iwami, but I'm not sure if it was him. I don't see him anywhere now, so good chance that it was him. So, killed their two best generals + two family members in two turns. Not to mention the severe losses they took!
Btw, looking at the map, it's quite impossible that Suenaga is still alive. Because, their armies have 1 star or less generals. Formerly he could've been in the same army with his Daimyo which would've caused him to be invisible, but the Daimyo's army is now trapped in the Aki castle.
I'm surrendering Aki for now. If I place a large enough army there to maintain loyalty, the Hojo army in Bingo can outnumber me, by attacking in Iwami or Aki. They won't get new units by revolt anyway, because they have men left in the castle, and the region will be theirs again, by default.
Plans... wait for reinforcements, lower the garrisons in Kyushu to 60 men and invade Shikuko.
Total situation:
https://img80.imageshack.us/img80/6830/m22ve9.jpg
Turn #23:
Hojo indeed have Aki back. Minor glitch: their forces in Aki are shown as an 'attacking army', while they're just standing in their own region. Weird.
Still on 2-3-unit loyalty-keeping armies in Kyushu. It's increasing slightly though.
https://img221.imageshack.us/img221/8769/m23af0.jpg
Turn #24:
Again, nothing is happening. Got some bad news, a child of Hojo has come of age and is now one of his generals. Though, it said, that's his only heir. So there's only two family members left. ~:) Conquering Japan from the rebels will be easier than defeating the Hojo, so I hope that their family members come to fight at the front. ~:)
https://img247.imageshack.us/img247/6115/m24ft0.jpg
Turn #25:
I'm going to give it a try: 1 unit of Korean Spearmen in the Kyushu regions. All regions were 'Green' so I thought it could be done now. ~:)
Turn #26:
Going fine. All is green still.
https://img99.imageshack.us/img99/456/m26mh6.jpg
:smash: keep up the good work!
Turn #27:
All going fine still. 120 men in Satsuma and Osumi. The rest of the regions 60 men. Bungo has quite an army.
Scaring: Their army in Suo has grown a lot after some troop movements. I'm afraid they might attack Nagato. That would be horrible. It would cut off Iwami. I don't dare to move troops from Iwami into Nagato either. That would make my army too small there.
Turn #28:
Attacking Iyo with my army from Bungo. The Hojo in Suo haven't moved still.
https://img138.imageshack.us/img138/4149/m28xj3.jpg
You could be going for the hof 08 best stw write up.
Turn #29:
Ha! Very good news!! :2thumbsup: Reinforcements in Wakasa. And not just a few, full stack! ~:) :beam:
Battle in Iyo: 528 vs. 540.
I attack on a Sunny day.
Gah. They're making it too easy. Their army is mainly Ashigaru crossbowmen. 2 units of CA and one YC unit. Only need my cavalry, frontal charge on their cuddled-up ranged units, and I attack his gen. YC unit in the rear. All routs after a short fight, and I kill nearly all. 528 kills, 49 losses.
Moving some Korean Spearmen into Iyo to keep loyalty, and attacking Tosa now.
In Central Japan, I take about half of my new army from Wakasa to attack Yamashiro. Will give a lot of money if I conquer that. + Fewer troop training abilities for my enemy.
:2thumbsup:
https://img99.imageshack.us/img99/5581/m29ek3.jpg
Good luck with conquering Yamashiro, Drisos! I'd still be concerned about Nagato, however -- it's definitely vulnerable right now. :sweatdrop:
Turn #30:
There was no one in Yamashiro to defend, and in Tosa they gave up. This gave me lots of money! So, there'll come loads of reinforcements? :beam: :book: :balloon2:
Moving more men from Kyushu towards Shikoku, I should be able to keep loyalty there as well.
Still concerned about Nagato indeed, Martok. Yet, I don't know a good alternative to just wait and see what happens. I hope that if they attack they don't bring their entire army, and I might be able to get another miracle victory. (Those Mongol Cavalry seem to beat anything, lol ~;))
In central Japan I'm not conquering other regions, at least for now. Conquering more would mean more regions to defend, if they move in some troops. And there's no 'important' regions neighbouring Wakasa or Yamashiro, I guess.
https://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6559/m30uo0.jpg
Turn #31:
Nothing happens...
Turn #32:
Loyalty in Kyushu is over 150% everywhere it seems. I think it's safe now. Moving my armies towards Honshu and Shikoku now. (that'll help the Suo-Nagato situation ~;))
Moving some troops into Iyo, my Iyo army into Tosa, and attacking Awa with my army from Tosa. ~:)
https://img230.imageshack.us/img230/9725/m32ql9.jpg
You have inspired me to begin one  I will use a different title though.
Turn #33:
They give up in Awa.
Loyalty in Kyushu is staying perfectly fine. ~:)
And my army in Nagato has grown. I don't think it'll be easy to conquer anymore.
Turn #34:
Kyushu is now cleared of all armies. Because of that, I have quite some troops in Shikoku. Moving some korean inf. into Awa, and attacking Sanuki with my 'elite army'. ~;p
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/180/m34gr6.jpg
Turn #35:
They give up in Sanuki. Conquered Shikoku in very few time, and loyalty is 'Green' as you can you see. Seems like the campaign's progress is going lots faster now. I still don't dare to move my Iwami army though.
I'm now thinking of invading Iga. They have a castle there and at least 1 dojo, because they're training troops. I don't want to devide my 'Central-Japan-Army' into too small parts, but they don't seem to bring in reinforcements anyway.
Turn #36:
Nothing happens, except for:
Attacking Iga now:
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/3848/m36kf9.jpg
Turn #37:
Wicked! Reinforcements in Noto and Dewa. In Dewa a 180-men Rebel army decides to defend. Hopeless. I have 240 Heavy Cavalry, and easily defeat the with a simple frontal charge. Lost only 1, killed 178. Dewa's mine.
In Noto it's only thunderbombers and 'Korean Naginata'. Too few to keep loyalty high enough. So, I have them all move to Sado, and send in some reinforcements from Dewa. Sado has no army, but I just want to have enough men to keep up the loyalty. So, I'll have Dewa and Sado in the north, Wakasa, Yamashiro in Central Japan, and the entire islands Kyushu and Shikoku.
Iga loyalty is questionable. However, revolts are unlikely. I hope the Hojo/Rebels attack Noto, btw. Otherwise revolts will give Hojo more troops.
https://img86.imageshack.us/img86/11/m37fj3.jpg
Turn #38:
Loyalties in Shikoku are high enough... I'm lowering armies from 180 men to 120 men. Attacking Bizen with my 'elite army' now. ~:)
As you can see, Noto is still mine. Though loyalty is below 50%, no revolt yet. Probably next turn.
Iga, Sado and Dewa are all 'yellow'.
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/9746/m38ee5.jpg
Turn #39:
They gave up on Bizen.
Still no revolt in Noto. For a moment I considered moving in some troops to ensure loyalty. But that might bring Sado/Dewa in danger. Best not try.
No further movements/events.
Turn #40:
Iga, Sado and Dewa are 'Green' now. ~:) The Hojo attacked Noto so I actually lost it without revolt. Good.
No further movements/events.
Turn #41:
More good news, more reinforcements arrived in Chikuezen en Hizen.
Wow! Their second big attack on Iwami! Quite similar to the last one: 720 vs. 2140. Let's hope my best is good enough, once again.
My deploy, roughly similar to the first big battle in Iwami:
https://img81.imageshack.us/img81/3007/m41acv4.jpg
...
They move to my flank, instead of attacking from the front. I rotate to keep facing them. So, we're about to engage here:
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/5135/m41byy4.jpg
...
On the right flank I used 3 units of HC to sandwich a unit of YC and a unit of CA. Here, the YC are already routing. The CA will soon follow. But enemy YS are closing in. I will have to hurry. Even worse, I may be too late to avoid engagement already.
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/4338/m41cdl3.jpg
...
Gah, I wasn't paying attention. Got caught on the right flank anyway. However, their YS are routing now, and the rest of his army is exposed to my 3 units of HC. Hehe. ~:)
Left flank, a unit of YC closed in. I caught them with a unit of 'Korean Naginata'(Someone please tell me the correct name for those! ~;p) and attacked them in the rear with a unit of HC. They rout. Here too, YS are engaging. I rush in a unit of Light Cavalry to finish them soon. Don't want to take too much cavalry losses.
https://img291.imageshack.us/img291/3559/m41djz9.jpg
Feeling like a great charge now would rout all remaining enemies. They won't get within shooting range of my Skirmishers anymore anyway.
...
Some of his ranged units already started to rout.. time for a mass charge:
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/5364/m41eau9.jpg
...
Soon enough, their entire army routs. Soon later, most of them are killed. More good news: I trap the Hojo Daimyo, and he also is killed in battle.
Chasing the last infantry down with some HC:
https://img227.imageshack.us/img227/6108/m41fcc0.jpg
...
Totally destroyed 1st wave. I'm regrouping on the same hill, while Hojo reinforcements appear on the edges of the map.
https://img329.imageshack.us/img329/3503/m41gqd9.jpg
...
Their reinforcements are simply slaughtered one by one. Too bad though, time runs out before I can slaughter most. Still got a lot of kills though:
https://img301.imageshack.us/img301/4033/m41hkr7.jpg
Ah. This gives my some breath in the West.
https://img227.imageshack.us/img227/7787/m41dh3.jpg
Turn #42:
His last family memeber appears to be in Harima. ~:)
No really important/exciting events/movements.
Turn #43:
I decrease the army size in the Shikoku Regions, move some infantry into Buzen, and attack Mimasaka with the army from Buzen. Mimasaka has a large castle and at least a few dojo's. (The Hojo starts with that.) It'll be a nice and easy target.
https://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7697/m43gg9.jpg
Turn #44:
A Ninja makes an attempt on my rank1 general in Dewa. Failed. ~:)
The Hojo give up on Mimasaka. Another 1K+ Koku for me.
Their armies in the north and centre are increasing. (Echigo, Noto, Omi, Mino, etc) I hope they don't grow large enough to attack before I can get some reinforcements to back my armies up.
Turn #45:
No really important/exciting events/movements at all.
Turn #46:
No really important/exciting events/movements at all.
Turn #47:
Intresting. Another Ninja appeared in Dewa. This time succes, my general was murderder. But weird is: I got the movie for an ordinary general being killed in a field camp. (You're supposed to get a movie with a mongolian field camp where the ninja kills the general that's sleeping in a chair?)
Furthermore, no intresting events/movements... :embarassed:
Turn #48:
No really important/exciting events/movements at all.
The Hojo's armies are growing and growing while I keep waiting for those blasted reinforcements.. :wall:
Turn #49:
Gathering my Shikoku troops(korean infantry) for an attack on Awaji.
Furthermore.. nothing intresting.
Turn #50:
About time for some action. Invading Harima and Awaji now.
https://img217.imageshack.us/img217/5449/m50iq9.jpg
Turn #51:
They give up in both regions.
Time for more action. Attacking Suo from Iwami, with my entire army. ~:) :smash:
https://img217.imageshack.us/img217/2964/m51wv7.jpg
Turn #52:
Suo: 781 vs. 1045.
Light Rain.
Got my army into order and moved forward. Both armies on a hill now, neither dares to move, I guess.
https://img84.imageshack.us/img84/5409/m52ark4.jpg
He's moving forward 1 unit of SA. Weird. I'll be able to destroy it with some cav if it keeps closing in. On my right flank there's also a 1-man unit of Cavalry. that one might be useful in messing up their situation/position/formation.
...
Killed that unit. Yet, I lay under heavy fire. Killed 1 unit of SA, lost 9 cavalry. I'm not sure if that's a good deal.
He's moving more archers forward now. Might go for a charge with my light cavalry this time.
https://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6752/m52bet7.jpg
...
As said, I used the light cavalry this time. Couldn't chase those archers down to the last man, as his YS were close behind. I'm rushing back. Battle will be easy when the enemy has no ranged. ~:)
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/8848/m52cec2.jpg
...
Their yari's went after my cavalry, soon to be shot down. My skirmishers got in a few shots as well.
The rest of their army seems to be retreating. Time for a charge.
https://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5317/m52dih3.jpg
...
Gah! Timing wasn't good. Lost too many in short engagement. Winning battle though.
https://img215.imageshack.us/img215/7838/m52eex1.jpg
...
After a lucrative chase, battle was over. No sign of their reinforcements. Victory. ~:)
https://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4342/m52fsw5.jpg
So, the rest of them is trapped in the castle and will die soon. Severe blom to their troop amount in Southern Honshu. ~:)
Looks like the ball is rolling now... attacking Aki this turn:
https://img233.imageshack.us/img233/231/m52dc2.jpg
Interesting, Drisos. What's the overall composition of the enemy's army?
Hey Martok,
They had it organised well, two main lines, first one SA and Ashigaru Crossbowmen, second one mainly YS. (they had one unit of YA)
However, instead of staying on the hill, waiting for me, he had his archers butchered, and then messed up formation of the rest of his army, so it was an easy target for a Cavalry-Sandwich. ~;)
*****
Turn #53:
They didn't give up on Aki. Some reinforcements showed up by the port(they had rebuilt it), and it was about 360 vs. 330. Easy though. I had only cavalry. Enemy was hiding in a forest, yet, moving my units in and out of their range, the SA come out and I could engage them outside of the forest. Then, the rest of his army came to attack me, but the cavalry was too fast. Their main position was 'sandwiched' and soon routed. The rest routed along pretty soon. Killed 280, lost 28.
No further movements/events.
Turn #54:
Gah! All of a sudden, Awa, Iyo, and Satsuma have turned yellow. Seems unlikely that this is the work of Shinobi, since I have no ports in Kyushu. (I don't have any ports, of course) And the surrounding regions aren't affected. I should keep an eye on this. Moving 60 men into Awa for now.
Attacking, Bingo, btw. The men in the Suo castle are already dead. ~:)
https://img91.imageshack.us/img91/9172/m54cv7.jpg
Turn #55:
It may be a shinobi after all. Now Bungo turned yellow. Iyo and Awa are back Green.
In Bingo, another small fight. However, they retreat at the start of battle. My cav get in there fast enough to chase some down, however, they also take a few losses. killed 128, lost 8. Good news though, the general is now 4 star. I have a Light Cavalry unit with honour 6 now. :dizzy2: :2thumbsup: :beam:
Btw, where are all those reinforcements I should get? I've been conquering and earning money a lot lately...
Turn #56:
Gah, another death in the north. Now my general in Sado was killed. He was 0 star anyway.. but annoying still.
More attacks... Now invading Bitchu and Kawachi.
Turn #57:
W00t. Reinforcements. Few though. I don't understand one bit of this system. :dizzy2:
First battle, Hoki, 120 (reinforcements) vs. 120 Hojo.
Easy. They only have AC. I simply charge with my 60 light cavalry. killed 113, lost 14.
Second battle, Bitchu. Another very easy one. They have ranged only.. I simply cross the bridge and engage. Killed 215, lost 4.
The Hojo attacked Bizen... and I had nothing there. Lost the region. I should take it back right away to prevent them from walking into Shikoku. Btw, I abandoned it because I thought Bitchu was begin conquered, so there were no neighbouring Hojo regions anymore.
Third battle, Inaba. 100 (reinforcements) vs. 114 Hojo.
Once again, AC only. One unit of HC does the job. Killed 93, lost 7.
Fourth battle, Kawachi. 300 vs. 271. May be hard.
First I try the 'bait' trick with a unit of korean infantry. Yet, his YS don't come to chase me away. The ranged fire does so instead. gah. Then I simply crossed the bridge with my cav. Easy win, but their YS killed quite some. Killed 240, lost 53.
Fifth battle, Wakasa. They're attacking from Mino and Omi. 200 vs. 600.
Damn, this will be hard. Koreans only. 1 unit of all four kinds. May be intresting. I pick a minor hill far away from their deploy area... they'll be tired when they get here.
Gah. Too many AC. I managed to destroy a unit of YC and a unit of YS. (love the thunderbombers. ~:)) But then I was almost surrounded by AC. In attempt to pull off a mass rout on them I actually pulled a mass rout on myself, lol. Good kills ratio still though, 125 vs. 53.
So, my forces retreat to Yamashiro. I should be able to hold on to that, now.
Furthermore, I'm moving 60 men into Sanuki from Awaji, to block the Hojo in Bizen. And I'm attacking them with 120 Light Cavalry from Bitchu. Moving some troops around in an attempt to keep loyalty everywhere. (Inaba and Hoki are red now)
See for yourself ~:) :book:
https://img230.imageshack.us/img230/8702/m57bh8.jpg
Yikes! I see you've been busy. ~ You're going to try and retake Bizen, then?
Turn #58:
Bizen was easy, of course. Killed 82, lost 10.
Hard to keep all regions happy. I hope I won't get any revolts...
Turn #59:
Can't say that I'm satisfied with the way things are going. Conquering a lot, but barely have enough men to keep the loyalty up. I haven't had any proper reinforcements in ages.
Can't do more right now than keep armies moving to the right places to prevent revolts or attacks from Hojo... it's hard though.
Turn #60:
Things start looking better. No red anymore. Any help at all from Mongolia would be appreciated though. :juggle2: :wall:
Btw, the Rebels and Hojo are in a tough war in the North! Seems like the Rebels are causing them serious trouble, and probably they're really decreasing their income this way. Rebels control Echigo and Mutsu now, and as far as I can know, I think they have at least Kozuke and Hitachi as well.
https://img230.imageshack.us/img230/5896/m60nc8.jpg
Turn #61:
Good news and bad news. Finally some reinforcements. Not as much as would be logic. (I got more with less conquered money earlier in the game... weird) But, still good news. They arrived in Inaba.
Bad news... they're attacking Yamashiro. I should've known. Well, I'll make the best of it. it's 360 vs. 681. Not even 2 to 1... should be doable. Hehe. ~;p
Wow. Went well. Shot down their 2 units of YS with my skirmishers, and then created a mass rout of hundreds of AC with only three units of light cavalry. Chased down almost all. Killed 675, lost 23.
Weird. Almost all of Kyushu and Shikoku turned yellow now. I'm rushing in some Korean Spear Infantry.
While my lands in Honshu were suddenly green... loyalty is shifting back and forth...
Ahem. On the attack, once again. Izumo, Tajima and Tamba all in the same turn. :whip:
Turn #62:
First battle: Izumo - 420 vs. 301.
Easy one. They have ranged inf and YC only. My HC charges in and routes most of their ranged. They YC manage to get a few kills with a good flanking move, yet they're soon overrun. (I actually used korean spear infantry in this battle! I rarely do. ~;))
Killed 279, lost 14.
Second battle: Tajima - 420 vs. 420.
Gah. Took too many losses, my own fault. My growing arrogance is causing problems. I thought some YS in the forest would rout when I'd attack them from all sides, but no. They killed quite a lot. I made it up though by killing them to the last man. Killed 420, lost 60.
There was no army in Tamba, so, that's mine too.
Unfortunately, the Hojo Daimyo fled into Wakasa. He must have foreseen this. :sweatdrop: :shame:
Hehe. I'm going to use all those Korean Spear Infantry to get 60 men in all regions I conquered so far. I wonder if I even had enough of those. Well, if I even get close, I can move them around now and then, I'll get more insurance that the lands I leave behind will stay mine...
Attacking Wakasa now... let's keep pressure on the Hojo.
https://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1899/m62df1.jpg
Turn #63:
They give up on Wakasa.
Moving around a lot to keep loyalty... but no important events...
Turn #64:
Loyalty in Kyushu is really becoming threatening. I don't understand. What could trigger this? It was perfectly fine for a while, then starting decreasing again? :dizzy2:
Nothing interesting happening, btw...
Turn #65:
In Kyushu regions are yellow even with 60 men in each region. Frustrating.
Also, some more reinforcements would be nice. :sweatdrop:
I can't do anything but move around and prevent revolts... Hojo is gaining more strength again, of course.
Turn #66:
Ok, things are improving. No more red. Still, I'm not going to conquer more. Again, where are those blasted reinforcements?
Turn #67:
Nothing intresting/important happening.
Turn #68:
Nothing intresting/important happening.
Turn #69:
Reinforcements in Wakasa. Yet, only 3 units. That won't help much. But I'm on the attack again. Omi is my next target. ~:)
https://img91.imageshack.us/img91/2508/m69vn8.jpg
Turn #70:
Small fight in Omi. Yet again, they have AC only. Easy win. Killed 240 (all), lost 6.
Attacking on... I'm invading Yamato now.:book:
Turn #71:
Yet another easy battle in Yamato. I have Light Cavalry only. The enemy hides in a forest, and fires at me when I get in range. I fire at their YS, which has it's effect. They come out of the forest. I sandwich them, and then soon charge the rest of his units, causing a mass rout. I don't recall the kill ratio, but it was as usual.
Attacking Kii now.
I wonder is there's some sort of cyclus in this loyalty stuff.. Entire Kyushu turned from Green last turn to entirely Yellow this turn. Too much coincedence.
https://img92.imageshack.us/img92/1086/m71sm1.jpg
Turn #72:
Battle in Kii, the enemy retreat soon after the start of battle. I catch a few before they reach the border. Killed 31, lost 0.
That's all...
Turn #73:
Waiting, waiting, waiting... fine though, Hojo's are starving, trapped in their castles.
Turn #74:
Nothing happening...
Turn #75:
Same story...
Turn #76:
All regions not neighbouring the Hojo have a 60 men army now. All korean Spear and Naginata units are used up for that. I might even need to start sacrificing my skimishers.
Those Ninja's are causing me a serious headache. A two star general was killed in Omi. I hope that my two 4 star guys will survive for a while..
Attacking Ise now.
Turn #77:
Easy win in Ise. Again, they retreat at the start of battle. I catch most of them. Killed 399, lost 17.
https://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3759/m77mw3.jpg
Turn #78:
Nothing happening...
Turn #79:
Loyalty is ok everywhere... time to attack. ~:) Next target: Mino. Their daimyo is there. Would be nice to kill him. I have 80 thunderbombers, so I'm attacking in Sunny weather.
Turn #80:
Gah. Didn't get a chance to use my thunderbombers, sadly. Very easy battle though. Created an early mass rout of his ranged infantry, and then his Daimyo got caught up in battle and was surrounded and killed. Killed about 400, lost two dozens or so.
So, I thought, Hojo gone, but no, appears that he had produced another son. I haven't been paying attention to messages about that, I guess.
Attacking Echizen now. ~:)
Turn #81:
They give up in Echizen.
Attacking Owari now. Important region for them. 1K+ income, + troop training abilities.
https://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9695/m81md0.jpg
Turn #82:
Easy win in Owari. They decided to deploy at the riverbank betwee the two bridges... not good plan. I crossed both, then sandwiched them. Mass rout, and chased down most of them. Killed 597, lost 15.
The Hojo attacked Sado. I had only 120 korean infantry there, so I retreated to Dewa. I hadn't been paying attention to the size of the army in Noto, I guess.
Turn #83:
Nothing happening...
Turn #84:
Attacking Kaga now. ~:)
Turn #85:
Nice battle in Kaga. I took the high ground and made sure they attacked me, instead of the other way around. However, I was too optimistic about an attack on their flank with my HC, and his YC killed quite a few. When my main army charged it was soon over, though.
Killed 386, lost 64.
I can finally get the Hojo's southern border and Dewa in one screenshot now. ~:)
https://img219.imageshack.us/img219/3171/m85dm1.jpg
Turn #86:
They attacked Dewa. That was logical, seen the huge army in Mutsu.
About 500 vs. 1200.
Luckily, it's good weather. My deploy is on a small hill..
https://img80.imageshack.us/img80/1461/m86ayb4.jpg
They keep closing in... and as I feared, mostly AC. They will run away from my thunderbombers. I have fire at a unit of YS. And they gave them hell.
https://img80.imageshack.us/img80/8573/m86bvf8.jpg
:skull:
This one volley caused a mass rout among his AC. So I charged with all my cav, starting a long, long chase. Hehe, it was very far for them to walk back to the border. :2thumbsup: After chasing them down I used my tired cav to do the same to some reinforcements and the few units that hadn't routed.
Easy win, after all. Killed 1164, lost 116.
Gah! My first revolt, I believe? In Kaga. And it's a quite an army. I'm retreating to Echizen, that was red too. So it'll stick to one revolt. Bad enough though...
Where are all those reinforcements that should've come long ago? :dizzy2: :furious3:
Turn #87:
Another attack in Dewa. Less than 400 vs. over 1100.
Went even better this time. They had more YS, which were a nice target for my thunderbombers. Another mass rout, another long chase. Similar to the first battle in Dewa. Killed 987, lost 56.
Turn #88:
Nothing happening.
https://img143.imageshack.us/img143/3184/m88wj7.jpg

Hojo's really got to be sweating it out now. :sweatdrop:
It is weird that you haven't been getting much in the way of reinforcements Drisos. I checked the MI manual and it really doesn't have much in the way of detailed information on Mongol reinforcements.
Yeah, it would sure be nice to know what -- if anything -- triggers reinforcements to appear. Is it conquering a certain number of provinces? Do they appear at certain times? Is it random? This is why I never liked the Mongol campaign. :wall:
Still, I do enjoy reading about it. Keep on, Drisos! :2thumbsup:
Hojo's really got to be sweating it out now. :sweatdrop:
Yeah. :cool2: But me too, :sweatdrop: without reinforcements I can't keep attacking. I'm running running out of warriors, no matter how few I loose. :dizzy2: :embarassed:
Gregoshi
04-03-2008, 04:12
Drisos, are you destroying buildings in the provinces as you conquer them? Granted, it has been a few years since I last played a Mongol campaign, but I don't remember reinforcements being so few.
I recall when I last played as the Mongols, I made up a raiding army and just went from province to province destroying everything that I could - be it armies or buildings. The raiding army held no provinces other than the one it was in. This was just to keep the army intact and concentrated. In my feeble memory of that campaign, I think I was about where you are now with the southern half of Japan conquered.
Any building are automatically detroyed. Except for border forts, I destroy those myself though.
I think the arrival of reinforcements must partially be based on luck, at least. That's the only way my 'bad luck' can be explained... :embarassed:
Gregoshi
04-03-2008, 14:06
Any building are automatically detroyed. Except for border forts, I destroy those myself though.
Aren't the border forts your only defense against shinobi and ninjas? Maybe that is why you've been having problems with loyalty in the rear areas and the assassination of a few of your generals.
Yeah, I've been wondering for a while if what I was doing with them was the smartest thing... I might try rebuilding those.
My money's just disppearing now, anyway :dizzy2:
Gregoshi
04-03-2008, 15:39
I don't think you'll be able to rebuilt anything. I suspect that is why border forts are the only building not automatically destroyed when you take a province.
Oh, but there is a 'build' menu, and the 'Border Watchtower's' are displayed there as option to build. I never actually tried it, though. I shall do so next time I continue playing. ~:)
There should be a link between money and reinforcements.. but if I don't get any, anyway, there's better ways to spend my money.. :shame:
Gregoshi
04-03-2008, 19:31
I should never trust the manual (or my memory) I guess. :laugh4:
Back on topic: I anxiously await your next moves Drisos!

Excellent campaign story, Drisos. *bows*
If I remember correctly, the only buildings Mongols can build are Border Watch Towers and Forts.
I haven't played a Mongol campaign in ages. I dimly recall that reinforcements, at least the first few waves, come at specific times and specific places, the number and quality of troops based on the revenue value of the provinces conquered in a specific amount of time (I think, the amount of time since the last reinforcements). If I chose to spend money building forts, my reinforcements would be less. The watch towers were very helpful in controlling "loyalty" however, and necessary sometimes.
Also, I used the "star coverage" method, leaving large garrisons (3-5 units of Korean Spearmen or Skirmishers) in provinces that bordered a large number of other provinces, which seemed to increase the loyalty of the provinces they bordered. In the outlying provinces of the "star," I'd have no more than one unit as garrison (sometimes none). I found the Korean Spearmen to be only marginally useful in battles, so didn't miss them much. I loved using small armies of only Light Cav to win the small and medium-sized battles. In the big battles I tried to use balanced armies if circumstances permitted.
EDIT: I see two new posts have arrived since I started this response, heh.
Turn #89:
Nothing happens.
The Hojo have quite an army in Mutsu. I might lose Dewa soon.
Turn #90:
Ah, as expected, they attack Dewa. 322 vs. 1164. Will be hard, I guess.
Not as expected, I win this one. The first few incoming units run away after one thundervolley, after which I rush in and kill the enemy Daimyo with some heavy cavalry. Mass rout, and in the chase I kill anything without a horse.
Reinforcements are dealt with with my thunderbombers and heavy cavalry as well.
Look at the kill ratio of the 'alive' thunderbombers unit. Lovely!
https://img85.imageshack.us/img85/5015/m90arz2.jpg
Yet another Hojo son takes over the command.
Furthermore, nothing intresting happens.
Turn #91:
Nothing happens.
Hojo's armies are growing bigger and bigger. If no reinforcements show up I can't win in the long term.
Turn #92:
Next attack in Dewa. 244 vs. 1000.
Same story as previous battle. I kill yet another Hojo Daimyo. I wonder if he has another son ready? :dizzy2:
https://img148.imageshack.us/img148/958/m91aiv3.jpg
Ah yes, another son. Ok, the 'kill their family' thing isn't going to work...
My army in Dewa is getting really small now. I'm going to lose it anyway. Let's cause some trouble with it while I still can. Invading Mutsu with it now.
Turn #93:
Hmm, they moved in quite some reinforcements. I ended up fighting against 800 men. Yet, I still won.
Didn't kill his daimyo this time, though.
https://img85.imageshack.us/img85/9705/m92atq5.jpg
Wow. That gave me A LOT of money. Now moving on, into Shimotsuke. I hope that I can win another. ~:)
Turn #94:
They give up in Shimotsuke. Another nice amount of money is added. Now invading Kozuke...
Turn #95:
They moved in some men. Battle of almost 150 vs. 250. Killed 221, lost 11. Another nice amount of money, and invading Musashi now.
Turn #96:
Short but though engagement at the river bank. Killed 73, lost 27. Yet another nice amount of money is added.
Invading Kai now.
Turn #97:
No troops in Kai. Another nice amount of money. Invading Sagami now.
Turn #98:
No troops in Sagami, so yet another nice amount of money. Invading Izu now.
Turn #99:
They give up in Izu, so another nice amount of money is added. Invading Suruga now.
https://img84.imageshack.us/img84/606/m99do1.jpg
Almost there, keep it up!
Heh. That army is going on a nice little pillaging run there, Drisos. Let's hope you can keep things up until more reinforcements arrive!
Turn #101:
They give in Suruga. Next up is Totomi. That army surely is on a rampage. :smash:
Turn #102:
Nothing in Totomi to stop me. Another huge amount of money. Rough estimation of money gathered with this army is the past years: 35K.
Now going for the mission impossible in Shinano.. aw well, not too impossible though, might send some reinforcements from Mino.
Turn #103:
Most bloody turn in the entire campaign I guess. I'm attacked at all fronts.
Defending Echizen: 540 vs. 1079.
Deploy:
https://img228.imageshack.us/img228/554/m101amj9.jpg
...
A group of a few units has moved to my left flank. Running in skirmishers and heavy cavalry to take care of it..
https://img228.imageshack.us/img228/9774/m103bnd1.jpg
...
The skimishers did well. The group is now routing, and soon most will be dead.
https://img87.imageshack.us/img87/6558/m103cfz3.jpg
...
A few more volleys, followed by a massive charge. Most of their army routs.
https://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2507/m103dgr2.jpg
...
Ha. Victory.

Next is: Defending Mino. 325 vs. 501.
Easy battle. They have mainly cavalry, but my thunderbombers (I had 88 of them) were devastating. I lost quite a few of them, but they destroyed and routing anything that came near. A cavalry charge+chase finished it off. Killed 358, lost 37.
Next... defending Owari. 180 vs. 600.
Simple matter of letting them cross a bridge, then sandwiching, crossing the bridge, routing the remaining units, and then chasing everything down. Killed 452, lost 57.
Last, attacking Shinano, though I have a great army I mess up and get caught in a tough engagement. Killed 200, lost 45.
Ok, so another nice amount of money. I like this rampage style, so I take my army to invade Echigo. I depleted the armies in Kaga, Hida, Shinano and Mikawa in one turn. Their only big army remaining is in Suruga, (that's huge though) which has no port. Echigo will be an easy target probably.
For a moment I consideren going on full attack. Now their armies are weak, I could advance further, using the 1-unit-armies in my conquered regions to provide me with enough to maintain loyalty.
However, I'm not going to try it. If it goes wrong, I will loose much of what I've achieved so far. Let's wait for reinforcements... if money is at all linked to reinforcements, I should get loads... But that logic hasn't been working all that well in this campaign.
https://img148.imageshack.us/img148/1788/m103gt2.jpg
Turn #104:
Nothing to stop me in Echigo, so yet another nice amount of money added.
Invading Dewa now. Seems like they've already built a mine there. I'll see if I can move to Sado and Noto etc. ~:)
Turn #105:
They moved their huge armies into Shinano. So, Mino might be attacked. I gather most of my forces there.
They gave up on Dewa. Invading Sado now...
Unfinished business. Just checked, and the savegame is still there. I'm going to finish this campaign-story soon.
Cool, I'm looking forward ~:)
Phew, looked around on the map for a while before hitting enter. It's been a while. Current situation that my forces had grown smaller and smaller and I desperately needed reinforcements. I had brought in lots of money, but it didn't yet pay off. If there won't come (many) reinforcements, Hojo will probably start taking back territory. Let's hope for the best.
Turn #106:
Crap! Massive attack on Mino. 820 vs. 2382. It's kinda my last significant army. If it can't hold, nothing will.
Deploying on the great hill of course... Korean ranged in front, moving some light cavalry to the left side of them, heavy cavalry behind them.
https://img218.imageshack.us/img218/5468/m106gr7.jpg
Enemy archers open fire... don't know what to do really. Thunderbombers/Skirmishers? Or just wait, or tickle them with some heavy cav? Hmm, no, not the cav, they won't get back up the hill too soon after such a charge. I'll wait some. If they don't progress, I'll open fire too.
https://img224.imageshack.us/img224/5453/m106agi1.jpg
The hill after my I gave my thunderbombers 'fire at will'. :smash: The enemy's main infantry waited too long, I got impatient and shot down his archers. Then the infantry came rushing uphill as well, and were shot down just as hard. General is alive but routing. Killed loads! Too bad I got two hits on my own units. Lost 12 of those bombers... aw well, cost-effective like this, you'd think.
https://img224.imageshack.us/img224/5453/m106agi1.jpg
Sending the thunderbombers to retreat. The skirmishers are my next welcome for anything that comes uphill.
Lol, again, I got impatient. Their archers were killing men of mine that didn't even resist... Couldn't watch that any longer and rushed some cavalry down. Mass rout of the remained army, slaughtering those now. Will try to regroup uphill.
https://img224.imageshack.us/img224/7179/m106bkc4.jpg
Ok... didn't bother to take further pics, because it were all mini-confrontations. I was afraid of too much energy loss, but no it kept going quite well. Retreating the thunderbombers was a mistake though, they got attacked by some 'reinforced' YC. Too bad. Well, I gave quite a hard blow to their army, as you will see below. (*proud of nice result*)
https://img219.imageshack.us/img219/6281/m106cev6.jpg
So... now both Hojo and I have very few armies left. With some reinforcements I could overrun them, it seems. But same goes for him. :book:
Result of my 'roaming army': They gave up on Sado, got some koku from there. Men trapped in the castle, but I don't dare to stay there and have 'em killed, because my army might get trapped between Noto and Dewa. Advancing to Noto... a fortress there, so it might deliver another nice amount of Koku. + the way will be open for either Kaga or Etchu(and Shinano after that. (ambitious though))
Turn #107:
Another 2000 Koku from Noto. I wonder what's Genghis doing with those huge amounts of money I'm sending... Anyway... I leave Noto and proceed to Kaga. A small army there, they might put up a fight. (I hope so, because the army looks slaugterable.)
Note: EEK! Osumi is yellow loyalty now. While there's a 60-men stack there all the time. What's with this... :(
Turn #108:
They gave up on Kaga... 230 men trapped in the castle, worth the siege, I guess. Got to move on though, if I want to burn Shinano. Leaving 2 units in Kaga, moving the army from Echizen there too. I hope that'll be enough. Attacking Hida with the roaming army. (The plan is, next turn move on to shinano, reinforced by some troops from Mino... Shinano is probably a VERY advanced region)
Osumi back green btw. ~:)
Turn #109:
Crap, they're moving in quite some reinforcements to Kaga. Not quite outnumbered though. 505 vs. 638. My army is quite less strong then usual though. Ah we'll see.
Wow! Kaga has a nice spot for ranged defense! Don't recall defending this one before. Nice. ~:)
Hmm, they came from the side, and I kinda messed up micromanaging. Lost too many because of that. (Eventually it was just face them H2H head on) Killed 494, lost 50.
Even worse, my army to attack Hida somehow didn't progress. (They're back in Kaga now)
AND- a big Hojo army has showed up in Noto. Probably the army that persued my roaming army. It doesn't look friendly.
And there goes my plan to attack Shinano on two sides. Aww. Well, attacking Shinano from 1 side then. 300 Cavalry from Mino. Let's see. I'm leaving the roaming army(+even reinforcements from Echizen) in Kaga to beat the crap out of that approaching army from Noto.
Screenshot of the map:
https://img216.imageshack.us/img216/7002/m109dj1.jpg
I'm still dying for reinforcements.
Turn #110:
Ah. Seems like I'm getting a good chance in Shinano, but losing Mino meanwhile. They're attacking Mino from Hida and Mikawa. It's 140 vs. 383. I have 120 skirmishers and 20 thunderbombers. I can't win, I guess, but I'll see if I can take some heads. Will deploy very close to the border to make a very short retreat possible.:book:
Crap! Loads of Ashigaru crossbowmen. Perhaps I should retreat right away. I'll wait some longer, maybe their Yari's will advance along.
Yes. ~:) Mission accomplished. Killed 44 YS of them, lost 0. Lost battle of course, though.
Now Shinano. If I loose all these men die, which would bring me great trouble. 300 vs. 351. I'm curious. :juggle2:
Attacking in thick fog. (not intentional) Find the enemy at the big hill in the back of the map. I move to their side, micro-manage a nice attack on the flank of their YS-units, and most of them rout within seconds. Killed 308, lost 13. :balloon2:
Lol. I must have conquered Shinano before. Nothing there. (something though, but not as much as expected.) My mistake. Since that army is now cut loose too, I'm moving it to/attacking Hida. No attack yet in Kaga, I might come in time to reinforce. However, same time Hojo has cut trough to Mino and can take other regions. I simply don't have much of an army left after so many years of fighting.
Turn #111:
Hojo Daimyo presses on to Echizen from Mino. Again, my 120 skirmishers and 20 thunderbombers may give it a try, knowing though that victory is nearly impossible.
Lol. They actually won! After a long wait the enemy finally approached. Thunderbombers once again were no use. (weather... crap!) But after a short ranged engagement I killed 42 and lost only 3, so their ashigaru's had seen enough and went home. Nice. ~:)
Now then more important: Defending Kaga. You could call this outnumbered: 515 vs. 1024. However, I've done it before. I'll do my best.
Ha. Another nice victory. Killed 653, lost 41. My Light Cavalry and Skirmishers got some nice volleys, and after that they soon broke to a massive cavalry charge. The chase afterwards didn't go too well, apparantly. Still happy about this one though. The rest of their army is trapped in the castle! ~:) Very nice. A pointless death for all of them.
They gave up on Hida. Destroying the stuff there. 73 men in the castle, yet I can't stay, because it will probably cause a revolt. (=more men for Hojo) So, moving on to Etchu. (There's 100% farming there etc.)
Turn #112:
This 'trip' to Shinano, Hida & Etchu gave us thousands more koku. Still wondering where all those thousands of reinforcements are... :furious3:
Moving the army in Etchu back to Kaga. (loyalty there was BAD, so I'm trying to save it now.) Same time, I try to stop Hojo's moving back into my territory. Sent some of the '60-men-loyalty-garrisons' to the front line regions bordering Mino.
Turn #113:
Nothing special happening. Hojo isn't attacking, but gathering forces. It's just damn plain now. I need reinforcements, otherwise he'll slowly continue breaking my territory down. I don't have any idea what to do about it. I'll just wait and pray.
Loyalty in Kaga is better now. In the backland it seems working still too.
Turn #114:
Same story.
Turn #115:
Attacked in Owari. 108 vs. 1001. I retreat. There's now hope in such battles.
Time for another screenshot.
https://img220.imageshack.us/img220/7521/m115fd6.jpg
As you see, the army in Kaga is my last 'significant' army. I don't know what to do with it though. You can also see I'm using more and more of those '60-men-loyalty-garrisons' in the line of defense. Won't help though. Hojo can bring up big numbers in no time, and my army is only decreasing and decreasing...
Turn #116:
No changes.
Turn #117:
Hojo armies rapidly growing. No further changes.
Turn #118:
No changes.
Turn #119:
No changes.
Turn #120:
No changes.
Surpising loyalty in the backland. (Where the small loyalty-garrisons left all's still ok.)
Turn #121:
No changes.
Screenshot:
https://img220.imageshack.us/img220/1131/m121uo5.jpg
Huge army in Noto as you see. An attack will come. Even if I win, there's no hope. They will eventually break through. Only a going stream of reinforcements on my side could conquer Japan.
That's it for tonight. Kinda hopeless situation. :(

Weird that you're not getting any reinforcements...probably best if you attack owari and defend kaga, then try to send an army into hojo territory to destroy their troop producing provinces.
Turn #122:
No changes really.
Going to reduce the amount of units in the backland significantly. Have to try to minimize Hojo progress westwards, while waiting for reinforcements.
Might take that 'big' army in Kaga to push into enemy terrority one last time. (Send them towards Kozuke/Shimotsuke/Hitachi/Shimosa/Musashi/Kai/Kazusa/Sagami etc.) Would be nice if I defended Kaga once before that, so that these huge armies are decreased. If my army would walk away now they'd walk over my leftover garrisons in no time.
Turn #123:
No changes.
Turn #124:
No changes.
Turn #125:
Finally, there they come. Attacking Omi. I have only few Korean units. 240 vs. 720 it is. Again I will see what they can do before retreating.
Good result again. Shot quite some YS with my skirmishers. Killed 174, lost 13.
Also, they attack Kaga. At last. 680 vs. 2383. Let's kick some ass. :smash:
My simple deploy:
https://img78.imageshack.us/img78/7048/m125ep2.jpg
I get in some very nice shots with the skirmishers and thunderbombers. Their infantry is decimated. I take quite a few losses by their ranged fire meanwhile though. When most of their infantry was dead or routing I gave them the heavy cavalry charge... of course that routed all the rest. Chasing them down now.
https://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8276/m125axe2.jpg
Again, rest of battle wasn't really intresting. One by one killing off groups of enemies with my cavalry. Went well. :2thumbsup:
https://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4898/m125bcb0.jpg
Leaving Kaga now... and attacking Hida. Planning to go to Shinano-Mikawa-Totomi-Suruga-Kai-Sagami-Musashi, etc. (Quite ambitious eh ~:))
Also attacking Omi. Who'd expect that? It's meanly Korean infantry what I have. It might prove a totale mistake to even try this... but who knows?
Turn #126:
Lol! They assasinate a general of mine in Echizen. He was rank -1. Why on earth would they want to do that? :dizzy2:
They attacking Ise from Omi and Owari... few men remained in Omi, so they gave up on that. Ise is 300 vs. 386. (Including their Daimyo) *I realise all of a sudden that eliminating their family would be VERY useful at this point, may want to try killing their Daimyo in this battle. I recall killing loads of generals in battle, so who knows how few heirs he has left*
Hmmm, not a chance. Still won though. Killed 178, lost 60. (Bad result, I know, I was too busy with luring his daimyo) Lost quite some by ranged fire. Anything that came near was killed by my skirmishers.
They gave up on Hida. 400 men in that castle. After a great doubt I decide to stay there for a while. Almost all of my cavalry is in that army. Only 1 unit (a 4 star general) is sent to Echizen.
I'm also in doubt about an eventual attempt to wipe out the Hojo family. I'm attacking Owari. (Daimyo's there now... who knows)
Sceenshot:
https://img95.imageshack.us/img95/9408/m126ae0.jpg
Turn #127:
Attack on Owari. 451 vs. 426. Don't feel confident about this.
Hmm, simple victory. Crossed both bridges same time, he was defending further backward. Came to me and opened fire. Skirmishers soon scared them off. Suprisingly soon they routed. Chased some of them down with my single cavalry unit. Killed 199, lost 13. ~:)
One second I had the hope that his daimyo was trapped in the castle... but sadly not. He's in Mino. Ghehe, another plan: surround Mino and then conquer it. Would be hard though. I'm attacking Shinano now with my 'roaming' army from Hida. Moving some other troops into Hida to let those men in the castle die. Also keeping a garrison at Owari for that purpose.
Loyalty is still ok, everywhere. Keeps surprising me.
Turn # 128:
They give up on Shinano. 100 men in castle, but I can't wait, because his 'Huge Noto army' is now in Etchu. They may take Shinano back anyway. So, moving on to Mikawa now. I give up the plan of surrounding the enemy Daimyo, for now.
The castle in Hida was conquered... so I retreat back to echizen, moving more troops back to my line of defense. (Echizen/Wakasa/Omi/Owari)
The conquering of Omi, Owari, Hida and Shinano already gave me another load of koku.
Turn #129:
Ouch, they're defending Mikawa. 526 vs. 370. And I have to win, for Shinano is conquered back by them behind me. Let's hope I don't take too many losses.
Ah, good enough, I guess. Killed 264, lost 31. The first unit to cross lost lots, but when they broke through I could kill many in the chase. ~:)
Moving on to Totomi right away.
I'm leaving Echizen now too. Turning my 4-regions line of defense into 3-regions.
Turn #130:
They gave up on Totomi. 180 men in the castle, but I don't dare to stay there. A big army has shown up in Shinano and can already cut my off. Have to hurry eastward. (Invading Suruga now) Totomi and Mikawa gave nice amounts of Koku btw. ~:)
They took a great part of their army in Mino to attack Mikawa. (which I gave up of course) So Mino is free to take. I'm attacking it, and moving back to Echizen too. (If I get hold of both, the line of defense is stronger. Mino>Omi etc)
Turn #131:
Crap, didn't work. They moved so many troops into Mino that I didn't even bother trying. Retreating to the Wakasa/Omi/Owari line.
They gave up on Suruga. Moving my troops to Kai now. ~:) I notice that Izu is well advanced as well. May move there after Kai. ~:)
Turn #131:
Crap... second defense against my roaming army already. 495 vs. 480. No doubt that I might win, but if this continues I won't get very far.
Ok, nice. They routed at the start of battle. Another victory for my general, and no losses on this quest. ~:)
Moving on to Izu now. ~:) Sadly I have to leave the castle with 480 men alone... Still a full stack in Shinano and I don't want to do that battle.
Screenshot:
https://img219.imageshack.us/img219/5816/m131hs3.jpg
Weird about those reinforcements. I think killing the family would be one of your best bets, at the moment.
Turn #132:
Conquered Izu, now moving to Sagami.
No further changes.
Turn #133:
Awww, they probably thought they gathered enough troops now to continue taking territory back... they attack Wakasa. It's 440 vs. 753. Will be hard.
Hmm, only had to shoot some infantry off with thunderbombers (they killed 16 of their own, pity) and counter some cavalry with korean infantry. Wen well. 183-30. ~:)
Crap, they moved a big part of their Shinano army to Kai. Let's hope they don't block my roaming army in time. Also, they moved some troops to Sagami. Still gave up though. Moving on to Musashi. (had to leave yet another big army trapped in a castle alone... too bad)
Turn #134:
Crappy! Again I'm forced to attack a river. 495 vs. 480 in Musashi.
Use the same unit as bait, and same method. Shot down his yari's a bit, when shot down enough, I engaged them, they soon routed, and I could rush my cavalry to his ranged units, routing the entire army. Chase wasn't super effective, but still killed 299. Lost 19.
Moving on to Kozuke.
No further changes.
Turn #135:
Ha! They give up on Kozuke, another nice amount of Koku. (I deliver 10.000 in one year this time, just to give some numbers)
Rebellion in Musashi. Non-Hojo, so I'm only happy with that. Hojo's enemy is my friend. ~:)
Moving into Echigo now. Watchtowers in Kozuke told me that it has rebuilt some expensive buildings.
Turn #136:
No resistance in Echigo. Dewa shows 'mine income', so I'll move by there too. ~:)
The rebels now own Musashi.
No further changes.
Turn #137:
No resitance in Dewa. Moving on to Mutsu.
No further changes.
Turn #138:
No resistance in Mutsu, much koku from there. Moving on to Shimotsuke.
No further changes.
Turn #139:
Next attack on Wakasa. 410 vs. 1198. Going to deploy close to the border...
Hmmm, another simple victory. They routed pretty soon. killed 531, lost 68 or so.
Pretty much resistance in Shimotsuke, 476 vs. 817.
Simple case of micromanaging in a mayor engagment. Killed 638, lost 40. ~:)
Moving on to Hitachi now.
This year I brought in 10.000 again. Just to be sure I'm giving numbers.
Enough for today.
Damn, Drisos. You're doing very well with the limited manpower at your disposal, but it really sucks you've still not received anymore reinforcements. I'm beginning to think that taking down the Hojo family might be the only way to win.... :sweatdrop:
I've played this campaign quite a few times and there are often gaps where no reinforcements arrive. It's often necessary to raze a good few provinces in one turn to trigger them and this gets difficult to do later on when you're overstretched.
I've been watching for heirs with my 'roaming army'. Haven't found any. I might give killing that Daimyo a few more chances.
But with the current amount of troops I have left, I can't defeat the remaining armies on the map, I think. Not even if they turn Rebel and no new enemy troops are made. ~:)

Thanks for the info! :book:This reinforcement thing is really starting to confuse me. This 'gap' (if it is one) is surprisingly long. But who knows, someday they'll start showing up again. I'll just do my best to do as good as I can, while hoping for a change.
Raze several provinces a turn... might be something to try. Though I don't really have that option anymore sadly.
Might want to do a research in these forums about this. Perhaps people reported this before. :juggle2:

If you kill the daimyo in battle and wipe out the clan they generally stop training troops iirc.
Turn #140:
They give up on Hitachi. 5000 koku from that. ~:) Moving on to Shimosa.
No further changes.
Turn #141:
They move in some men to Shimosa... have to attack. 436 vs. 420.
They start to retreat when I cross the bridge. Chase them of course. Killed 172, lost 5.
Move 2 units into Kazusa. Don't dare to go there with my entire army, because the Hojo might then retake Shimosa and I would have only one way out: trough attacking a full stack behind a river. I hope to hold Shimosa 2 turns and then move back westward.
Turn #142:
Aw. Major attack in Shimosa. 431 vs. 1548. Most men sent in my port. :embarassed:
Lol. Shogun: Total Slaughter.
First wave was drama! Shot down dozens of ND, then blocked the bridge with 2 units of Heavy Cavalry. Lost few, killed loads, especially because they were so many that they could easily run away from the bridge. After that, slaughtered some individual units here and there, and voila
Killed 994, lost 16.
My Kazusa-attack was automatically cancelled. Trying again now. ~:)
Turn #143:
Lol! Once again. Now: 415 against 1607. (Gah, my Kazusa-attack is cancelled again :furious3:)
Same story. Killed 1110, lost 23. ~:)
Trying Kazusa for the third time now...
Turn #144:
Finally. Kazusa. 112 vs. 120.
Simple. Killed 114, lost 3.
Moving the units back to Shimosa. New harbours are emerging already. I think I'll take my army and go back westward, towards his daimyo.
Turn #145:
Moving into Musashi
Turn #146:
Resistance in musashi. 389 vs. 180.
They retreat when I cross the bridge. Lose 4 in the chase sadly, but kill 99. ~:)
Moving to Sagami.
Turn #147:
They gave up on Sagami. Moving to Kai. (Izu has nothing to pillage, Kai has mines, and Sagami had harbour)
Turn #148:
Major attack on Omi. 446 vs. 1078. With only 2 skirmisher units and for the rest weak infantry I don't know if it's winnable. I'll go for it though.
Tough battle. Killed 435, lost 189. Their reinforcements killed a lot. The first wave was pretty easy with a few volleys and a charge. (they even rout from a infantry charge :dizzy2:)
The give up on Kai. Invading Shinano now. ~:)
Turn #149:
Resistance in Shinano: 385 vs. 397.
Enemy retreats when I come close. Manage to chase some down still. 81 kills.
Turn #150:
Going to give surrounding his Daimyo a try. Attacking Mino bigtime, and leaving my army in Shinano at the defense. Will be hard to get this done, but maybe it'll payoff. :idea2:
https://img152.imageshack.us/img152/5950/m150ar8.jpg
Turn #151:
Enemy invades Wakasa... too bad, since I used my entire garrison there to attack Mino so it was unguarded. Conquered Mino though, because entire army left... to attack Shinano.
Massive attack on Shinano. Ghehe. 385 vs. 2895
Flattering that they think they'll need so freaking many troops.
Lol. If I'd actually win this one... :laugh4:
We'll see. I'll at least take some heads with my suberb effecient army. ~:)
They clutch together... My Light Cavalry kills like 150 just by ranged fire. Then I note that his Daimyo has come along (!!!). I immediately send some heavy cavalry to their back, to block him when he routs. They start attacking those units, so I'm kind of forced to charge with everything, and rout the entire army. No problem there, but I must be careful... that Daimyo should not escape this time.
YES!
Killed the bastard. ~:) Took only a few seconds, surprisingly.
Killed the entire wave.
Next wave was mainly cav. Didn't kill even half I guess, but didn't lose much either. Quick rout + chase by light cavalry.
After that, one by one killing them off.
Result:
https://img100.imageshack.us/img100/3789/m151ih2.jpg
Amazing battle. :beam:
Crap! Still Hojo there... his son took over. Well... let's kill him too, when he comes close. The enemy is severely weakened now, so I can afford some more moving. Attacking Echigo now. And Hida. Who knows where he'll show up.
https://img81.imageshack.us/img81/1811/m151afc1.jpg
Turn #152:
They gave up on Hida. Quite some men in the castle there now. Let's hold on to it.
His Daimyo showed up in Etchu. Apparantly he rose in Noto.
I saw that, so I cancelled the attack on Echigo.
Attacking Etchu now. (pure for the daimyo) Holding on to Shinano and Hida meanwhile.
Turn #153:
Lol, forget to do that, actually. (didn't send in the attack)
Doing so now.
btw, loyalty in backland is a drama! Everything yellow. And i have only 60 cheap infantry per 2/3 regions.
Seems to be triggered by the death of that daimyo. :(
Turn #154:
Battle in Etchu. 175 vs. 191. ~:)
Crap, they rout at start. Daimyo not in castle either. Moved to Echigo. Attack there now.
Turn #155:
Enemy takes Omi, with that mini-army from Wakasa. I can't be bothere right now.
Battle in Echigo. 295 vs. 311.
Same story, but this time I chase them in time. Killed 179, lost 10.
Daimyo moved to Dewa. I attack there too.
Loyalty is hard now... Echigo and Shinano are close to rebellion. Might ruin all.
I'm attempting to retake Omi, btw.
Turn #156:
- They give up in Omi.
- They invade and conquer Owari
- They invade shinano bigtime
- I attack Owari
- I attack Wakasa
- I leave Hida empty
- I leave Shinano
Which cuts loose Echigo. Enemy gives up on Dewa. Burn the stuff there and move from Echigo+Dewa to Mutsu. (where his daimyo now is) So I'm roaming again. ~:)
Screen:
https://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9438/m156dx1.jpg
Turn #157:
- Wakasa: They give up, so it's mine.
- Omi: They invade, I have no garrison, so it's theirs.
- Mino: Major attack by them: 363 vs. 660. They have only ranged. My army routs when closing in. Killed 46, lost 78. Whatever...
- Hida: Theirs again.
- Owari: I attack. They rout at start. Mine again.
> attacking Omi now. Their Mino stack is quite/too big sadly.
Major attack on Echigo... but they retreated anyway. Strange.
Attack on Mutsu, they retreat when I close in. Chase some of them down. I kill 94, lose 3.
> Their daimyo is back to Dewa, so I attack there..
Turn #158:
- They attack Wakasa again. Too many, I leave.
- Omi is mine again.
- Mino is mine again.
- They attack Owari but retreat.
> I think I'll be retreating westward now... can't hold the line of defense that I want. (wakasa-mino-owari)
Major attack on Echigo again, but is retreated...
Their Daimyo is in a big army in Dewa. Don't want to attack now, because there's lots of enemies trapped in Echigo castle. I hope they'll attack. (and not retreat)
Turn #159:
The move westward goes ok. I'm going establish Kawach-Tamba-Tajima for now.
Castle died out in Echigo. Attacking daimyo in Dewa now.
Turn #160:
Same story. Now attacking Mutsu, that's were his daimyo went.
Onwards:
Finally, a chance to meet this new daimyo guy. :) They decide to defend in Mutsu.
Crap. They retreat when I close in... what a coward is he! Killed 181 with my cav though. Staying in Mutsu a while to kill those remaining 375 in the castle.
Great. ~:) They attacked, and didn't retreat. Finally. Shot their daimyo with two skirmisher volleys, mass rout, chased with cav... killed almost 1.000, lost 19.
Sadly... another son. Will try to find and kill him with that army in Mutsu.
Had a minor battle in the line of defense.. wen't ok. I'm now at Kawachi-Tamba-Wakasa. They only border Wakasa now so my main army is there. Kinda settled down there for a while. The Hojo are having trouble with Ikko-Ikki!
Sasaki Kojiro
12-09-2008, 23:24
Dang, 500 kills with one unit.
And yeah, from what I remember playing the hojo he has like 6 sons. Thought you'd killed most of them by now but I guess not. Still, knocking out 2500 in one battle had to help you :)
I wasn't paying attention to their family until now, so I can't be sure. But I must've killed some heirs before. I guess I killed 3/4 infantry generals and 1/4 cavalry generals in the battles so far. (when routing the general is usually ran over with cavalry)
I'm going to write less and play more now. Want to get this campaign done now. ~:)
Moved the roaming army to Shimotsuke. (Couldn't see his Daimyo in one of the regions bordering Mutsu, so I decided to start moving again.) His Daimyo is now in Shimosa. I guess a major attack will come next turn so I'll just stay in Shimotsuke.
Honour levels are going crazy btw. I don't recall ever having a full unit in Single Player having h8. (expect for the hamamoto unit of course) 3 of that is from the general's bonus. (he reached rank6 a few battles ago) Lol. I don't recall doing that either - training a general from 0 to 32 victories. (Though I did once turn Kenshin into a rank 7 general, iirc)
*****
Battle in Shimotsuke:
Deploy... nice hill. :) Enemy has only ranged and cavs, it seems... will be easy as crap. :P
https://img156.imageshack.us/img156/824/o1xr8.jpg
Being Mr. Impatient again. He holds his cavalry too much to the flanks... ranged crap units are an easy target. I hope their death doesn't make his daimyo rout, would be pity. Though Mongol Light Cavalry may be faster.
"Chaaaaaarge!"
https://img75.imageshack.us/img75/7174/o2uy6.jpg
Pretty much destroyed the ranged crap in seconds... Daimyo routs, but I'm blocking him. :)
Let's hope I don't lose to many on those cav on the flanks, those aren't routing yet as I'm asking them to.
https://img75.imageshack.us/img75/3756/o3xv4.jpg
Close up! :D Wondering what's he's going to do about those three axes falling down on his head the same time? :) Right flank is routing now too. Left flank, some cav are fighting my spears. :)
https://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7980/o4zg8.jpg
Lol, that stroke actually killed him already. :D
Some reinforcements came, but they retreated right away. (blocked & killed many though.)
Result:
https://img152.imageshack.us/img152/3310/o5kz1.jpg
Now... let's hope the Hojo finally stop existing :S
:dizzy2:
Yet another of those... Well... just have to look him up and kill him... :sweatdrop:
Moved to Musashi. Daimyo travelled by port to Shimosa. So... attacking Shimosa with a mini-army now.
Yeah. 4th Daimyo I kill in battle...
https://img75.imageshack.us/img75/776/o6ya2.jpg
:dizzy2: :dizzy2: :dizzy2:
:juggle2:
 :wall:
Still not. Yet another son.
Meanwhile took Sagami and Kai with some 60-men-armies. (just for the cash) This entire rampage with my roaming army has brougt me tens of thousands of koku again. I must have delivered like 100.000-200.000 koku after the last reinforcements arrived... lol.
Crawling back into Musashi.
New daimyo travelles to Kazusa, then to Shimosa. Many Hojo troops around. I'll wait for him to come to me, again. ~:)
Hmmm. They didn't. So I attack Shimosa. Might be very foolish... might be not.
Not foolish... won pretty easily. Just messing them up a bit with a bait unit, then move heavy cavalry to the other side, break anything that tries to stop them... chase the rest...
and... Killed the 5th Daimyo in battle. :dizzy2:
Guess what? Another son... What the heck :furious3:
New daimyo is in Kazusa already, but first have to survive a major attack on Shimosa. Outnumbered over 2 to 1 now. :embarassed:
Lol. Killed 952. Lost 20. Killed like 200 with 0 losses. Anything that crossed that bridge was shot up by the skirmishers and routed, so I took no losses. Of course I lost some in the chase and in the eliminating of reinforced units.
Sent a mini-army to Kazusa. And there.. I killed his 6th Daimyo in battle:
https://img75.imageshack.us/img75/4536/o7rs4.jpg
The Hojo should shag less and fight more. :idea2:
This is getting really exciting here. :book:
And guess what? Still not done... I don't get this. :dizzy2: :help:
Daimyo moved to the west front this time. Major attack in Shimosa meanwhile...
Another major victory. Moving to Musashi again.
Resistance there, but anoter major victory for me. Moving to Shinano.
Stay in Shinano for a while to burn down the castle... but they gather some forces and do another major attack.
Yet another major victory. And moving on to Hida now.
Following their Daimyo to Etchu, then to Echigo. We did battle there.:book:
Another easy victory. Daimyo did retreat early though. Following him to Dewa.
To Mutsu... Some resistance there. But easy victory. On to Hitachi.
They give up. Follow him to Shimotsuke.
*meanwhile: line of defence moved backwards... Now Tajima-Tamba-Kawachi. Still a hard situation there.*
Following the daimyo to Mutsu now.
Resistance there - major victory. Daiymo retreated though.
Following him to Hitachi... :book:
Resistance there - major victory. Daiymo retreated though.
Following the daimyo to Mutsu now.
Resistance there - major victory. Daiymo retreated though.
They give up in Hitachi. Follow him to Mutsu again. Resistance there - major victory. Daiymo retreated though.
Getting very boring... !!! (I guess you noted that... :P...) killing hunderds each turn with that roaming army, because they start to retreat when I get near them. I wonder how many thousands each unit of those heavy cavalry already killed :beam: Not many left, btw...
Am being drived backward in the west... Slowly. Line of defence is now Awaji-Harima-Tajima. Had some battles in Kawachi and Tamba in which I killed like a thousand, but they just keep coming. Can't help it. :(
Seems like I'm just going to keep doing this for a while until I really run out of men. And then I lose. :(
Well, someday you'll have to end that bloodline of 'm. Doing great so far, anyway!
Hmm, I'm beginning to think that there's a built-in feature that the Hojo family does not die out in this campaign. Just killed the 7th Daimyo and it didn't help.
...
And killed the 8th. Still no change. And just for your info... in all the other battles I've been doing meanwhile, while killing those Daimyo's, I killed ALL generals. (I was just paying attention to it now... I think I've been killing almost all generals in battle so far... so I must've killed heirs too)
...
And killed the 9th.
I'm quitting this campaign. It's just impossible that he had 10 sons ready, while I was killing almost any general in battle. And I haven't gotten any reinforcements in ages, while I probably made the mongols the richest people in the world... lol.
These features/bugs kinda ruined this campaign.
Well, mentally you definitely won ~:)
Drisos Mongol Campaign: Part 1
Turn 1 - Turn 20
Turn #6:
More bad news, lots of Hojo reinforcements arrived in Bingo.
https://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8437/m10va8.jpg
Turn #11:
Ok, lost Satsuma, but loyalty seems a lot better. Attacking Hyuga now.
https://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5007/m11nc0.jpg
Drisos Mongol Campaign: Part 2
Turn 21 - Turn 40
Turn #21:
Will have to keep looking at loyalty.
https://img81.imageshack.us/img81/3859/m21hc5.jpg
Turn #22:
Turn #29:
Drisos Mongol Campaign: Part 3
Turn 41 - Turn 60
Drisos Mongol Campaign: Part 4
Turn 61 - Turn 80
Drisos Mongol Campaign: Part 5
Turn 81 - Turn 110
Most of their army routs.
https://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2507/m103dgr2.jpg
...
Ha. Victory.
https://img87.imageshack.us/img87/6181/m103eij5.jpg
Turn #106:
Another 2000 Koku from Noto. I wonder what's Genghis doing with those huge amounts of money I'm sending... Anyway... I leave Noto and proceed to Kaga. A small army there, they might put up a fight. (I hope so, because the army looks slaugterable.)
Note: EEK! Osumi is yellow loyalty now. While there's a 60-men stack there all the time. What's with this... :(
Turn #107:
They gave up on Kaga... 230 men trapped in the castle, worth the siege, I guess. Got to move on though, if I want to burn Shinano. Leaving 2 units in Kaga, moving the army from Echizen there too. I hope that'll be enough. Attacking Hida with the roaming army. (The plan is, next turn move on to shinano, reinforced by some troops from Mino... Shinano is probably a VERY advanced region)
Osumi back green btw. ~:)
Turn #108:
Turn #109:
Turn #110:
Drisos Mongol Campaign: Part 6
Turn 111 - Turn 150
Turn #111:
Ah. Seems like I'm getting a good chance in Shinano, but losing Mino meanwhile. They're attacking Mino from Hida and Mikawa. It's 140 vs. 383. I have 120 skirmishers and 20 thunderbombers. No attack yet in Kaga, I might come in time to reinforce. However, same time Hojo has cut trough to Mino and can take other regions. Turn #112:
Hojo Daimyo presses on to Echizen from Mino. Again, my 120 skirmishers and 20 thunderbombers may give it a try, knowing though that victory is nearly impossible.
Lol. They actually won! After a long wait the enemy finally approached. Thunderbombers once again were no use. (weather... crap!) But after a short ranged engagement I killed 42 and lost only 3, so their ashigaru's had seen enough and went home. Nice. ~:)

Turn #113:
This 'trip' to Shinano, Hida & Etchu gave us thousands more koku. Still wondering where all those thousands of reinforcements are... :furious3:
Moving the army in Etchu back to Kaga. (loyalty there was BAD, so I'm trying to save it now.) Same time, I try to stop Hojo's moving back into my territory. Sent some of the '60-men-loyalty-garrisons' to the front line regions bordering Mino.
Turn #114:
Nothing special happening. Hojo isn't attacking, but gathering forces. It's just damn plain now. I need reinforcements, otherwise he'll slowly continue breaking my territory down. I don't have any idea what to do about it. I'll just wait and pray.
Loyalty in Kaga is better now. In the backland it seems working still too.
Turn #115:
Same story.
Turn #116:
Attacked in Owari. 108 vs. 1001. I retreat. There's now hope in such battles.
Time for another screenshot.
https://img220.imageshack.us/img220/7521/m115fd6.jpg
As you see, the army in Kaga is my last 'significant' army. I don't know what to do with it though. You can also see I'm using more and more of those '60-men-loyalty-garrisons' in the line of defense. Won't help though. Hojo can bring up big numbers in no time, and my army is only decreasing and decreasing...
Turn #117:
No changes.
Turn #118:
Hojo armies rapidly growing. No further changes.
Turn #119:
No changes.
Turn #120:
No changes.
Turn #121:
No changes.
Surpising loyalty in the backland. (Where the small loyalty-garrisons left all's still ok.)
Turn #122:
No changes.
Screenshot:
https://img220.imageshack.us/img220/1131/m121uo5.jpg
Huge army in Noto as you see. An attack will come. Even if I win, there's no hope. They will eventually break through. Only a going stream of reinforcements on my side could conquer Japan.
That's it for tonight. Kinda hopeless situation. :(
Turn #123:
No changes really.
Going to reduce the amount of units in the backland significantly. Have to try to minimize Hojo progress westwards, while waiting for reinforcements.
Might take that 'big' army in Kaga to push into enemy terrority one last time. (Send them towards Kozuke/Shimotsuke/Hitachi/Shimosa/Musashi/Kai/Kazusa/Sagami etc.) Would be nice if I defended Kaga once before that, so that these huge armies are decreased. If my army would walk away now they'd walk over my leftover garrisons in no time.
Turn #124:
No changes.
Turn #125:
No changes.
Turn #126:
Finally, there they come. Attacking Omi. I have only few Korean units. 240 vs. 720 it is. Again I will see what they can do before retreating.
Good result again. Shot quite some YS with my skirmishers. Killed 174, lost 13.
Also, they attack Kaga. At last. 680 vs. 2383. Let's kick some ass. :smash:
My simple deploy:
https://img78.imageshack.us/img78/7048/m125ep2.jpg
I get in some very nice shots with the skirmishers and thunderbombers. Their infantry is decimated. I take quite a few losses by their ranged fire meanwhile though. When most of their infantry was dead or routing I gave them the heavy cavalry charge... of course that routed all the rest. Chasing them down now.
https://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8276/m125axe2.jpg
Again, rest of battle wasn't really intresting. One by one killing off groups of enemies with my cavalry. Went well. :2thumbsup:
https://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4898/m125bcb0.jpg
Leaving Kaga now... and attacking Hida. Planning to go to Shinano-Mikawa-Totomi-Suruga-Kai-Sagami-Musashi, etc. (Quite ambitious eh ~:))
Also attacking Omi. Who'd expect that? It's meanly Korean infantry what I have. It might prove a total mistake to even try this... but who knows?
Turn #127:
Turn #128:
Turn # 129:
They give up on Shinano. 100 men in castle, but I can't wait, because his 'Huge Noto army' is now in Etchu. They may take Shinano back anyway. So, moving on to Mikawa now. I give up the plan of surrounding the enemy Daimyo, for now.
The castle in Hida was conquered... so I retreat back to echizen, moving more troops back to my line of defense. (Echizen/Wakasa/Omi/Owari)
The conquering of Omi, Owari, Hida and Shinano already gave me another load of koku.
Turn #130:
Ouch, they're defending Mikawa. 526 vs. 370. And I have to win, for Shinano is conquered back by them behind me. Let's hope I don't take too many losses.
Ah, good enough, I guess. Killed 264, lost 31. The first unit to cross lost lots, but when they broke through I could kill many in the chase. ~:)
Moving on to Totomi right away.
I'm leaving Echizen now too. Turning my 4-regions line of defense into one of 3 regions.
Turn #132:
Crap... second defense against my roaming army already. 495 vs.
Turn #133:
Conquered Izu, now moving to Sagami.
No further changes.
Turn #134:
Awww, they probably thought they gathered enough troops now to continue taking territory back... they attack Wakasa. It's 440 vs. 753. Will be hard.
Hmm, only had to shoot some infantry off with thunderbombers (they killed 16 of their own, pity) and counter some cavalry with korean infantry. Wen well. 183-30. ~:)
Crap, they moved a big part of their Shinano army to Kai. Let's hope they don't block my roaming army in time. Also, they moved some troops to Sagami. Still gave up though. Moving on to Musashi. (had to leave yet another big army trapped in a castle alone... too bad)
Turn #135:
Turn #136:
Turn #137:
No resistance in Echigo. Dewa shows 'mine income', so I'll move by there too. ~:)
The rebels now own Musashi.
No further changes.
Turn #138:
No resitance in Dewa. Moving on to Mutsu.
No further changes.
Turn #139:
No resistance in Mutsu, much koku from there. Moving on to Shimotsuke.
No further changes.
Turn #140:
Next attack on Wakasa. 410 vs. 1198. Going to deploy close to the border...
Hmmm, another simple victory. They routed pretty soon. killed 531, lost 68 or so.
Pretty much resistance in Shimotsuke, 476 vs. 817.
Simple case of micromanaging in a mayor engagment. Killed 638, lost 40. ~:)
Moving on to Hitachi now.
This year I brought in 10.000 again. Just to be sure I'm giving numbers.
Enough for today.
I've been watching for heirs with my 'roaming army'. Haven't found any. I might give killing that Daimyo a few more chances.
But with the current amount of troops I have left, I can't defeat the remaining armies on the map, I think. Not even if they turn Rebel and no new enemy troops are made. ~:)
Turn #141:
They give up on Hitachi. 5000 koku from that. ~:) Moving on to Shimosa.
No further changes.
Turn #142:
They move in some men to Shimosa... have to attack. 436 vs. 420.
They start to retreat when I cross the bridge. Chase them of course. Killed 172, lost 5.
Move 2 units into Kazusa. Don't dare to go there with my entire army, because the Hojo might then retake Shimosa and I would have only one way out: trough attacking a full stack behind a river. I hope to hold Shimosa 2 turns and then move back westward.
Turn #143:
Turn #144:
Lol! Once again. Now: 415 against 1607. (Gah, my Kazusa-attack is cancelled again :furious3:)
Same story. Killed 1110, lost 23. ~:)
Trying Kazusa for the third time now...
Turn #145:
Finally. Kazusa. 112 vs. 120.
Simple. Killed 114, lost 3.
Moving the units back to Shimosa. New harbours are emerging already. I think I'll take my army and go back westward, towards his daimyo.
Turn #146:
Moving into Musashi
Turn #147:
Resistance in musashi. 389 vs. 180.
They retreat when I cross the bridge. Lose 4 in the chase sadly, but kill 99. ~:)
Moving to Sagami.
Turn #148:
They gave up on Sagami. Moving to Kai. (Izu has nothing to pillage, Kai has mines, and Sagami had harbour)
Turn #149:
Major attack on Omi. 446 vs. 1078. With only 2 skirmisher units and for the rest weak infantry I don't know if it's winnable. I'll go for it though.
Tough battle. Killed 435, lost 189. Their reinforcements killed a lot. The first wave was pretty easy with a few volleys and a charge. (they even rout from a infantry charge :dizzy2:)
The give up on Kai. Invading Shinano now. ~:)
Turn #150:
Resistance in Shinano: 385 vs. 397.
Enemy retreats when I come close. Manage to chase some down still. 81 kills.
Going to give surrounding his Daimyo a try. Attacking Mino bigtime, and leaving my army in Shinano at the defense. Will be hard to get this done, but maybe it'll payoff. :idea2:
https://img152.imageshack.us/img152/5950/m150ar8.jpg
I played on for many more turns after this. Yet, the last stages of campaign were very boring, so much that I didn't even finish it, and last dozens of turns weren't as intresting to read.
Two tings went 'wrong'.
- No reinforcements. While I sent tens of thousands of Koku. This is not normal. Bug?
- Infinite Hojo Family. As said, I made plans to start killing off their family. And I went to execute that plan. I killed his Daimyo in battle 9 times. While I kill the enemy general in battle like 2/3 times, so lots of heirs should've already been dead. It became clear that those heirs just 'appeared' when the Daimyo died. Probably because it's better for this campaign that the Hojo family does not die out. Feature?
At my line of defense I was pushed backward step by step. The Hojo kept making huge armies in no time. My kill ratio was awesome throughout the campaign, but even if it is 10:1, you can't win if you don't have any source of new troops and the enemy makes hundreds each turn. It was quite intresting though, struggling with very few troops to hold them off long as possible. Something I haven't done in a campaign before, I guess. I might have hold out of 10 more years or so, I wouldn't know. But the Hojo would've won. That's clear.
Very enjoyable campaign though. Most battles were too easy, but on the strategical map it was all quite intresting.
Thanks for reading! I'm sorry that I couldn't finish the story.
Sorry for the "bugs". Perhaps you try playing the Hojo site and go berserk with all the heirs you find. Then you see if you die out some day. :juggle2:
Was indeed interesting to read, I would love to have these kill ratios. Am I just bad or do the Mongols have such superb units?
For a while I thought of making a campain story myself, too. Just started a Hojo campain from 1530. But I don't think I would have the time for this atm, additionally I would have to make up the last 20 years or so and you all would have to participate in my relatively poor strategic skills.
Anyway, was fun reading. I'm looking forward to the next one. :laugh4:
Was indeed interesting to read, I would love to have these kill ratios. Am I just bad or do the Mongols have such superb units?
These units are superb indeed. ~:) And they got better and better... at the end my cavalry was h7-h8. ~;) That makes a HUGE difference.
...or so and you all would have to participate in my relatively poor strategic skills.
Hoho! That's not a reason to not do it. If you'll write on a campaign people will ask/advice/give tips/etc... It's very helpful when you're new! When I first came here I could barely win on 'Normal'... and the people helped me bigtime in getting better. ~:)
Just tried the Rebels & Ronin campaign in Sengoku Jidai for 15 minutes or so. Quite intresting too. But I'm not yet sure which campaign will be the next I play 'seriously'. ~:)

Those bugs are messed up...I definetely remember getting reinforcements all up the coast.
Awesome campaign, Drisos! ~ A pity you received no more reinforcements, but you did extremely well with what you had.
I think these two problems Drisos encountered are not bugs, developers put these on purpose.
* Pay attention the names of the Daimyo's after Hojo: Their names are not "Hojo", they are some other generals taking the control of the Hojo Empire army, and establish the resistance against Mongol Horde. You see, its not "Sengoku Jidai" times, its united Japaneese soil.
* Mongols gets no more reinforcements, because Mongols are quite small tribe, and they never had numerous sources for men on their mainland anyway. On 1230's, there were only 4 million Mongolian people on earth, which invaded China have 100+ million population. So even with hundreds of thousands of Koku, you cant have more Mongol Horsemen. (But it would be nice to have "only Korean" reinforcements)
