More often that not, the game will crash out to windows when I hit Esc to save the game, or load another. I think it may be a problem with the graphics. It would be handier if I could hit, say, F8, to save the game, without having to exit the game. Is there such a key?

Update to the latest video and sound drivers.
Turn off Sound Hardware Acceleration.

Ctrl + S for quick save (the file will be listed on top of the save game list).

Ctrl + L for quick load (reload the quick save).

Before you do Esc save, quick save first so if your PC crashes, you won't lose anything.

I'm not really sure that Esc save will help clear up some memory, but I still Esc save once in a while.
