Would I be correct in assuming that once Massilia falls to a faction, its specific type-hoplites will no longer be available "out in the countryside" for recruitment as mercenaries? Or, is it a case this happens only when the town falls to "YOUR" faction? I.E., the controlling faction can't recruit them any longer as mercenaries???

I ask because as the Romani, on the march around the Tyrennian Sea to Massilia, I recruited two such units, but once the town fell to me, they no longer appear out there for recruitment....

Mercenaries take a while to respawn after you've recruited them. Check the recruitment viewer to see if the Romani can recruit them as a normal unit.

Also regarding Massiliot Hoplites, their unit card shows them using a spear(doru I believe) while when I used them in battle they fought with a sword.

They share a model with the Hypaspistai and the Baktrian/Indo-Greek elite types, and use longsword as the primary weapon. I understand having OH spear as the primary causes weapon-swap issues, so it's in the secondary slot.

FootUnderstand. I was just able to recruit a third, so I guess "they" (whomever "they" is, since I own their town!) "re-spawned" one finally. I guess you could say they are Massiliot emigrants who are/were disgruntled with my rule!?? :idea2: :laugh4:

I'm not trying to recruit a swarm of mercenaries, especially as generally, they cost twice what a comparable factional or factional/regional unit does to build, thus actually "wasting" money. But a few, to add "tone and color" to a bland Roman army, are nice... IYGMD!? :juggle2:

I would say that it is more like the Massiliotes only having a limited number of men who have the gear and the training to be Massiliote Hoplites. Some of these are away fighting as mercenaries, some are in your army already. Some will not fight for you- barbarian invader of a great Greek city! Some are the sons of previous hoplite soldiers, but they are not yet old enough to stand in the phalanx.

OK OK, the roleplaying aspect of this game can get a bit too much~D .

In gaming truth, the mercenaries occur in regional pools covering several provinces and take time to become available again once a unit has been hired. The more valuable the unit, the slower it regenerates. So a unit that it more or less levy spearmen will be available again a lot sooner then an elite cavalry unit, for example.
