Welcome all Senators! Let this be our unique area of informal talk. We can discuss anything we wish, who to vote for, where to go next, etc.

For our first moves I propose a three pronged attack of greece and discuss who shall get what provinces in a friendly debate.

Now remember, this first year or two will be different from the true game. For example, you can purchase units or buildings on private funds, but after we have quaestors and aediles you must ask them to ask the senate, which we can all vote on.

Also, please list the names of who is for, and who is against the proposed mandates/orders. The Senate will judge its members, so it must know who is voting for what.

Sounds good to me. Better to discuss it before sending it to the Senators to vote..

I don't think focusing on Greece so early will benifit us. I think we should send what little forces we have to secure Northern Italia. Flavius Julius and his Son Quintus should be up to the task.

As for the Brutii, I do not know many of their family, nor do I you, Scipii.

As for the Maxentius, we will gladly send our sons Servius and Marcus to aid in the assault in the North.

Personally I'd rather see each faction expanding in their "normal" direction. Otherwise we're going to end up with a huge mishmash if all three factions split territories in each region Rome conquers.

Exactly my thinking: Julii north, Brutii East, Scipii south. But, let us not forget that able generals will be needed to defeat certain foe, and we are all roman. I say that to avoid confusion, we may exchange territories to maintain constant borders...though that leaves little for my family.

Good point, but it is up to the Senate on where we go...

There are many free peoples near us who do not answer to any King or Ruler, perhaps it would be better to bring them into the Empire before we strike against our true rivals?

Ah yes, but remember we are no Empire. We are a Republic. And I agree with you. We should assault the people on the island of Syracuse to the south...it is the jewel of the mediteranean and would provide us with much currency. This may lead to war with the Carthaginians, though.

As for the North, we should advance on the city of Genua, but this too would put us at confrontation with Gaul.

As for the east, I think we should allow the Greeks and Macedonians to wither themselves down, then send a legion or two to wipe them out. At the moment though, they may be too powerful and rich for a war.

As i stated, we should focus on Syracuse, and possibly war with the Punics.

For the moment.

Ha i should propose a mandate to slay those who speak out against the Republic! We will not be dictated by Kings, our forefathers fought much to hard to free us.

I see that our legions need to be commanded by noble-men or generals at the very least, but in these early days, what constitutes a legion? Each of our familys have only around 500 men-at-arms presently, and that number is not worthy of the name legion, is it? However, how much would be worthy?

We should develop a standard for the military i agree. Organization will help us in battles and economy.

I suggest 1 unit of velites, 5 units of hastati minimum.

For a full legion, when possible, i suggest 5 hastati, 5 principes, and 4 triarii. Also, i suggest 1 unit of velites.

I dont think cavalry is important at the moment, and our cavalry men do not match against the hordes of the north or the other factions. We should invest our money in our superb infantrymen.

Is that a mandate?

Its not in the Senate thread..so no not yet but it can be proposed.

Only a fool would forget to support our infantry with cavalry (ooc: don't forget in RTW cavalry, even equites, slaughter the foot infantry of Carthage and Gaul so easily).

TruePraetorian

Im not ruling out cavalry, just stating that infantry should be the backbone of the army. Our cavalry is inferior to opposing cavalry, and that money can be used to fund for hastati and even principes.
