WilliamWallace.zip
William Wallace
When playing as the rebels (.conan.) Play them in the high or late period. Make a small rebel army with 1 unit of archers, 2 units of highland clansmen, and 1 unit of mounted sergeants (with golden armour, and weapon upgrades). Wait until the year 1287. and then make a unit of Chivalric men at arms. The leader of this unit will be "William Walays" which is of course with medieval spelling "William Wallace". Not only will he be a good general (6 stars) but he will have the vice "fine leader". You can also add more command by making him king of Scotland.
Thanks Bob MC

The Unofficial Newby’s Guide to Using the Medmod IV
by Wes Whitaker
As a unofficial Guide to Playing the Medieval Mod IV, I would recommend that you familiarize yourself with the readme and spreadsheet as much as possible, then pick a faction that you are very, or most, familiar with to play as.
Go back over the charts and readme for this one faction to pick up all you can, then just take things as they come. Printing out the units’ page of the spreadsheet is really essential for this. If you run into something you don't understand, you should almost always be able to find the answer somewhere in those documents- the comments in the spreadsheet can be very informative regarding odd details. Hit either the Windows or Escape keys to minimize the game if you need to look up something without having to stop the game. Then, you can read up on other factions as you encounter them in battle. There are really only a half dozen or so units who have had their stats altered to the point that their role in the game has changed, and most all of these are non-Catholic units.
Yes, you will be learning the game anew to some extent, but why is that a *bad* thing, especially if most all the new stuff should turn out to be pleasant changes? For me, one of the attractions of games is getting to learn new things and new ways of doing things. And my goal with the Medmod is to polish and perfect what is already a great game, not to turn it into some unfamiliar. So, while the readme and charts may make it seem that the game has been radically changed, they are really a small percentage of the entire game. Most of the changes are subtle, and when you play it I feel confident that you will adjust to the changes comfortably and rapidly, and come to enjoy the game even more than before, as have so many others before you. And as has been pointed out, some of the changes might not seem needed at first, but once you observe the flow of a game with them, their value becomes apparent. Trust me. ;)

Fays MTW Info Pack.zip
Welcome to Mike Fay's (mainly economic) Info for Medieval Total War (FaysMTW_Pack.zip)
First release, dated 6 September 2004
Very minor change 22 October 2004 to add TWC as upload site
I'm RedKnight on the forums (fora?) of TotalWar.org (.Org) and TWCenter.net (TWC), and will keep the TWC library and .Org's 3dDownloads updated with the latest version of this info pack. For what it's worth, I personally find the .Org better for its message forums, and TWC better for it's very flexible library - which even includes a place to have a message thread for each file. If you have questions on this material, ask it at TWC - it will notify me by email. But be warned - at this time (10/22/04), I'm playing RTW and probably not looking back. :)
This info is current as of MTW/VI version 2.01 but focuses on the MTW (European) arena, not the VI (Viking) arena. It only applies to MTW, not VI. However, some concepts (such as tax collector viability) are generally applicable.
Anybody is welcome to rip my info, but be nice enough to give me credit. Much of it is original, by me. And some of the rest, folks knew how it worked, but I put it into readily usable form. Apologies if you've already done this and I missed it! (And within three days, all this stuff will be on the net without attribution, lol.)
Many of these files are Excel (2000) format. There's a free viewer at Microsoft. Also you can check here, and there's even the freeware OpenOffice that says it allows reading and writing of all major productivity suites - but I've never used it. Others have recommended it to me (but I don't need it, since I have Office already).
New version
This info is current as of MTW/VI version 2.01 but focuses on the MTW (European) arena, not the VI (Viking) arena.

regowner_table_formatted_VikingHorde.zip
This is a formatted version of the regowner table created by Viking Horde to make modding the Homeland GA's easier.
Simply rename the original in the medieval directory and copy this one into that directory.
The GA's are organised by province in this table in the original table it is one continuous list - quite confusing,
Viking Horde is planning on writing a guide on how to mod the GA's, (real life permitting - it is an awesome undertaking)

Hotkeys.zip
Hotkeys for Medieval Totalwar
I created this summary of the hotkeys used in Total Medieval War for the players that prefer (as me) to use the keyboard rather than to click on the orders buttons. I used the information in the manual, the game and in the frogbeastegg’s beginner’s guide (Thanks), and I put them to this place.

guide_and_files_forbetaHTW_v2.1.zip
Guide to make the HTW beta workable
First of all you need the beta of HTW installed, then follow this guide:
Campaignmap:
Convert the two jpgs into "tgas" (which you will find in this zip).
You could use "Irfan View" an picture viewer to convert them in the tga format (you find it with google).
When you have converted it into tga´s (both: MapTex.jpg and MapTex2.jpg converted to
"MapTex.tga" and "MapTex2.tga")
then put them into your "textures\campmap\Hellenic" folder.
Portraits:
To make the mod runable go into your "campmap\Portraits" and rename the vikings folder there to "Hellenic".
Then: Put the "Northtribs" folder from the zip into the campmap\Portraits\Hellenic folder.
That gives you most viking portraits in the mod:
If you want to have ancient portraits you have to put them manualy in the Hellenic folder (read the
readmes of the portraits, which you can download in the org too).
Now the beta should work.
But remember: Many things grafik will be not in this beta: They will be in the release
version.

printable unit guide.zip
Printable unit guide (STW, STW WE, MTW and MTW VI) in Word by frogbeastegg.
The Complete Total War Unit Guide by Frogbeastegg
This guide is the work of Frogbeastegg, unless otherwise indicated. If you want a copy of this guide on your website please ask and I will be more than happy to agree. This guide took me months, don’t steal it.
This printable guide is up to date and correct as of 12th January 2004, for recent additions check the on-line guide at: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=31444
Confused by cavalry? Annoyed by archers? Pounded by Polearms? Then this is the guide for you! This guide contains an in-depth analysis of every single unit and unit class to appear in the Total War series. It tells you what the units do, what they don’t do and explains the differences between units of the same class. You will also find the most important unit stats in here. This guide is written for single player but it should hold up well in multiplayer, just remember that Total War changes to a whole new game when your up against another human. This guide also assumes a basic knowledge of the principles of battle, you should know how to manoeuvre behind your opponent, ensure your troops have the best position etc. If you are a complete beginner or don’t know the basics of the battlefield take a look at the Beginner’s Guide to Medieval: Total War at:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=31444
NB: All the screenshots in this guide have been enhanced with PaintShop Pro in an effort to make them clearer. Sadly some picture quality has been lost in the making of this document, if you want to see better quality images you will have to hit the net versions of this guide. Also note that the pictures in the chapter headings are not intended to demonstrate good deployment of units, they are intended to break up the 105 page long text and look good!
I should probably add that I chose the factions for the screenshots based on colour contrasts to make the two sides as clear as possible. No bias is intended.

printable beginners guide.zip
printable beginners guide by frogbeastegg with tips for playing MTW, STW and any TW game in general.
This document is entirely the work of frogbeastegg unless otherwise indicated. You may do what you wish with this document as long as you do not make money from it or claim it as your own work. I did this for free and I worked hard. Don’t steal my stuff.
This printer friendly version of my guide is the September 10th 2003 version; there may be a more up to date version on www.totalwar.org forums so check there for updates. This version of the guide was made for Microsoft Word 2000; if you view it with something else it may lose its formatting.

JJ MTW unit ranking
The table below attempts to rank MTW units according to their shear power and their up-keep cost, which, IMHO, is far more important than the purchase cost (in any case a buy efficiency is also given).
All is base on "tootee_corrected_mtw_stats_v11" and on "tootee_ProjectileStats_v11"
