There is a Mod called Gathering Storm that has been in the works for over a year. It is set around the same time as Rome TW: Barbarian Invasion. So its sort of like the dark ages, but just before the fall of Rome.

It doesnt seem like there has been a lot of progress in acouple months.
There is also a mod called Peninsula Italica of early Roma and Europa Barbarorum II.
