Ondekoza ! Hai Hai !
It's "what the daisy is that music?" time of the month again and hereby I shall introduce you to Ondekoza.
Founded in 1969 by Den Tagayasu, Za Ondekoza (the demon drums group) is the banner carrier of my recent discovery.
They are a taiko band, Japanese drumming that is. Their shows are epic, as much as I see from online videos, with their sound composed of taiko, spiced with flute and chants. Not to be missed once they are around.
I started with their self-titled album, Ondekoza, released in 1997. Absolutely what I want. For an ear that listens to Kenji Kawai's pieces on Ghost in the Shell soundtracks over and over (best example here), Ondekoza is the music.
Here are some:
Yatai-Bayashi
Futozao
Monochrome II
Rythm.

Re: Ondekoza ! Hai Hai !
"Ondekoza" means "Demon Drummers". They were formed in 1969 to keep alive musical traditions of Japan. They are extremely serious and uncompromising about what they do. In the early '80s, some members split off to form Kodo, due to differing goals. Ondekoza moved from their original location (Sado Island) to reform in Kansai, while Kodo stayed in Sado. Both groups still perform some of the same pieces, including "Monochrome" and "Yatai-Bayashi".
In the 1975, Ondekoza became famous for running the entire Boston Marathon, then playing taiko onstage immediately afterwards.

On a local note: Shidara, a Japanese Taiko group, will be in my town this Sunday. I'm going, and will report back.

Re: Ondekoza ! Hai Hai !
Kukri,
I almost went to see Shidara. If I had read your post before the show, I would have suggested we meet there. Shidara gave me lessons in taiko.
I will be at the Renaissance Faire at Felicita Park today and next Sunday playing drums for belly dancers. If you go, drop by and say hi.

And how was the show then ?
