I was wondering if you guys were ever going to make these guys a merc unit because I can see at least it was planned in the D_M file.

Ah no. This is what is AFAIK called the Merc Trick. Basically put: if two units would ever need to use the same model, or if you happen to run out of skins you can still assign to the unit in the dmb (is there such a limit, actually?)... you can always make use of the merc entry.
Merc units can be recruited just like ordinary units, provided you set up recruitment code for them; but the big difference with other units is that the UI always goes into the merc folder (a nice way to keep the amount of UI you'd need to make down, if you use one skin for many factions for instance...) and that you can now basically serve many factions with just one skin.
