(Possibly stupid noob) question about units
So I just started recently to play Rome Total War, but besides just playing the tutorial, I've played the game only using EB. It's an awesome mod by the way, and my thanks to everyone who was responsible for its creation. However, I have a question, and I hope it isn't too stupid. In original RTW, the Romans have archers, ballistas, and onagers, but in EB, I can't seem to find out how to recruit these units. Are they not in EB for some reason, do I need to get one of the reforms to access them, or have I not constructed a certain building? Those units seem like they'd be a real help in battle, yet I can't seem to get them. :help:
Sorry if this is a really dumb question or a subject that's been discussed a million times before I got here. :embarassed:
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
Welcome to the forums!
You are Roman, so you are supposed to fight with Roman units (and possibly some foreign auxilliaries). That means you will not get Roman archers, but will have to do with the Celtic or Greek ones. The exclusion of Roman archers is based on historical reasons.
To get Greek archers for instance you need to build up the foreign MIC in greek cities. Taras is a Greek city, for example. Or you can hire mercenary archers.
More often than not the Roman Accensi (slingers) will do. Celtic slingers (Iosatae) are most excellent, and can be recruited in Celtic areas with a lvl 3 foreign MIC.
As for siege equipment, you will get those in a few cities once you have hit the Marian reforms, if I am not mistaken.
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
Since I'm too lazy to start my own thread for this and the subject is similar, could anyone help me too? The elite Getai heavy infantry Agema Whatevera that is in a loading screen and was also on the site. How do you get those in 1.0? All my main cities are maxed out and I can't recruit them.
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
You update to 1.1. In other words, they're not in 1.0.
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
Weheheeeeeeeeeee! :furious3: Then why did they make that fancy artwork? How could they even make a Getai army without Doru and Sica wielding troops? Don't they know that's all that Getais ever used? That's what we are taught in school at least. Had a big argument with a professor over this. He wouldn't wanna admit that the falx was used by professional troops. We ended up having a big argument there and he gave me a 1, that's like a J if such a thing was possible in US. Then I told him that my conclusion from that lesson is that the Getai were all using big clubs in battle, like the baseball bat that I have home and with which I will crush his skull. :laugh4: You know what happened a month later right?
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
Why? Because we couldn't get anyone to model it until 1.1.
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
That's too bad. I'm already deep into my Getai campaign, crushing those pesky romans, so I can't upgrade right now. I will probably never see that unit as I won't play the same faction again... I will probably play with the Macedonians in 1.1 and I think that's it with this game for me. Rome has such a bad effect on my sex life. Thanks EB team for making me go a whole month without sex!
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
You can build "Roman" archers but not until you get Imperial or Augustan reforms. Those can take place around 125 bc and require other factors as well. Note that they are "Eastern auxiliary archers" and can only be built in areas east of Greece. As for artillery, you can build those after the Marian reforms (175 bc).
Until then, I would suggest making a B-line to Mikra scythia, conquer it and set up a level 4 government. This will enable you to build Skuda Fistaeg Fat Aexsdzhytae, which are possibly some of the best if not the best foot archers in the game.
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
Ah ok thanks for the help guys

Nah. They're not half bad, but a bit cost-ineffective due to the price hike on nomad infantry; and the Saka ones have nastier bows, while the likes of the Cretans, Syrians and those armoured Persian ones are at least as good with the bow and a lot more resilient in a missile fight.

True but the Skuda have almost twice the ammo of the Cretans and 10 more than the Syrians and Persians. Couple that with their longer range and stronger bows than everyone except the Saka and you have a nasty ranged unit. Besides they are fairly easy to get for the Romanii compared to Syrian and Persian at least.

Ah, the classic ignorant professor thing. And it would be an I if it could exist.
The artwork was development artwork back then. Give the team a brake ~D
PS: Deci i-ai crăpat capu :viking: sau ţi-a pus un 0 pe lângă 1? ~D

Errr... no. I should know that well enough. Have you taken a look at their stats as of late, ie. 1.1 ?

Yeah. I'm glad they put it in 1.1 at least. Maybe I'm gonna fight against them in a future campaign...
Nu, am fost exmatriculat.
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
well they really are kick asses in 1.1
La bun chiar te-o exmatriculat?:laugh4:
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
so i don't now if this is the place but i will try to instal1,1 today can somebody say me witch faction is best to begin with
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
It's not really the place to ask, but if you want an easy first campaign, try Romani, Qarthadastim, Sauromatae, Sweboz. If you want a harder campaign, try a faction in a civil war (Aedui-Arverni, Makedonia-KH-Epeiros) or an emerging faction (Casse, Getai - this one is easier due to large starting army, Baktria, Parthia)
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
Slingers are better than archers anyway.

No they aren't. But then again, my tactics require archers.

The Effective Against Armour trait trumps archer's additional range by a long shot (no pun intended). Most archer units are worthless.
Re: (Possibly stupid noob) question about units
I play with the Getai that have good factional and close-by regional archers and HAs, supplemented by good anti-armor infantry.
