Confused MTW Modding Dinosaur

:help: I am very confused. I did some basic modding of MTW on my old computer with XP. I just got a new computer with Vista (ughh .... pulling of hair) and MTW II, now that I have the hardware to run it.

I wanted to make some basic mods, just change the number of turns and add some units from faction A to faction B. Basically, I want the game to run a little longer and therefore I need more factions to have pikes/muskets.

I am completely lost. Back in the MTW days, I just popped a text file open and it was all good. Now I have no idea how the unpacker works, how to make a .bat, and I'm turning into a dinosaur.

Any tutorials on how to do just really basic stuff, like add musketeers and pikes to the English faction and make the game longer?
