What are the requirements for being able to view the backroom? I always assumed it was a moderator only type of thing until I say a post saying it was for discussing politics/religion and such. Whenever I try and view it it just says "private" and I'm unable to see or do anything their.
Anyone can view the backroom, but its debates and heated discussions may not be to the liking of some people.
IIRC, you can just go to User CP and there is a place somewhere that allow you to show the backroom

EDIT: Hmmm... after dinking around with my User CP, I now cannot even see the tavern as an option when I'm in the main forum.
EDIT2: Its all good now. Sent a request to be able to view the backroom.
Kind of Like the front room, except on steroids, crack, and every other drug imaginable. It also contains such fun topics as WAR, ABORTION, CHEESESTEAKS, and MORE!!!!!!!

I suggest that if you enter the backroom to just take your drink and join a few of us in the corner to watch the brawl in the middle. If the fight looks unfair then join in, otherwise just sit back, enjoy your drink, and chuckle to yourself while watching the hotheads.
