Dismounted Faction Knights
This little bit has been bugging me to no end, why is it that the dismounted Faction specific Knights (English, Chivalric, Imperial, ect.) do so much more poorly than the dismounted Feudal Knights in hand to hand? It seems that their initial charge will do some damage, but once they get bogged down into mele combat with any unit of decent strength, they start to die like flies.
What am I missing here?
Re: Dismounted Faction Knights
Each is different.
Chilvaric Knights should be the same but better
English Knights are two handed, so they are bugged (attack animations)
Imperial Knights are Amour Piercing, so more effective against other Knights.
Hope that helps
Re: Dismounted Faction Knights
Indeed, thank you. My experience was mostly with English knights, which seemed to get absolutely trashed by even crappy spear militia units. I suppose my prejudice against them carried over to other factions.
Re: Dismounted Faction Knights
Yes, unfortunately the 2h weapon animation is a little buggy. Sometimes in vanilla you get it to work right and you are treated to your units massacring whatever they were sent against! But other times.. not so much.
Imperial Knights are a lot of fun too, as pever said they have maces and are good to take down other knights. It can really make taking out France/England toward the high/late game a lot easier. ~D
Re: Dismounted Faction Knights
Their morale of 5 and lower attack/defense stats don't exactly help with that though

Well, I also like the sound of Imperial Knights. I mean, come on! :idea2:
But in all seriousness, I haven't played HRE in forever. Perhaps I am confusing them with their feudal brethren in their effectiveness. Ah well.
Re: Dismounted Faction Knights
Are the 2h'ers still bugged in retrofit? And are any better at other units besides infantry?
What about the armoured swordsmen. Is it only the English who get em? And how do they compare the list above?
Re: Dismounted Faction Knights
AS are almost identical to DFKs with slightly better stats and 1 more armor upgrade (and cheaper too i believe) Only england gets them
Re: Dismounted Faction Knights
Armored swordsmen are pretty much noble swordsmen or dismounted polish knights or dismounted chivalric knights. Cost differs but stats are the same.
Re: Dismounted Faction Knights
Well for the 2handers there are:
- Dismounted English Knights
- Dismounted Noble Knights (France)
- Dismounted Portuguese Knights
And for the swords there are:
- Dis Feudal Knights
- Dis Chivalric Knights (two versions, Hungarian ones have less shield than Spanish/French)
- Dis Imperial Knights (less good overall but specialise against enemy armour)
- Armoured Swordsmen (cheap Chivalric Knights for England)
- Noble Swordsmen (Scots equivalent of Chivalric Knights)
- Dis Polish Knights (Polish equivalent of Chivalric Knights)
Then there's other units such as Dismounted Men at Arms, Huscarls etc which can match other foot knights and fill in for Catholic factions that lack knights later on in the game.
The 2-handers are like cavalry, you must use their charge properly. If they do the animation where they run and hold the polearm in a ready-to-swing position, then you can just sit back and watch the massacre. They will annihilate the entire enemy front line like a cavalry charge. Same for 2-handed axe and sword units, not just the polearms. If, however, they walk or even just run into the enemy, your men will get butchered pretty quickly, since like cavalry they will get slaughtered when bogged down.
So think of 2-handers are extra-tough cavalry without the mobility. Then you will see just how deadly they really are...
Re: Dismounted Faction Knights
i am not a fan of 2h infantry because i can never get their charge to work properly. I use the same approach as cavalry charging (wait for spears to tie down enemy, swing around the flank, line up, single click) and I'm pretty good with cavalry. However with 2h almost every time the same thing happens.
My 2 handers are nice and formed, the front row of the 2handers charges in axes akimbo, but the other 2-3 lines don't move from their place. The front line which charged in then gets decimated since it's only 10-20 guys.
