What does the shield bug workaround do, exactly?

How exactly did The_Boz achieve a supposedly balanced workaround to the shield bug? What did he do?

The shield value was removed and divided between armor and defense instead.

Since 1.2 its been officially fixed though, so no need for that.

I know, I was just wondering how the_Boz did it... :)

What mod did The_Boz do it in? Take the EDU of his and compare it to the EDU in 1.2 vanilla and you will have your answer.
