Something wrong or just extremely Bad Luck ??

I started a new game with the Gold Land to Conquer mod yesterday and encounter a very weird event which i want to share.

I was using my faction heir to fight a group of rebel peasants. My heir have the traits which give him Extra +2 hitpoints.

I organize a good position charge head onto the a group of stationary peasants. While my cavalry hit, 90% of them was killed instantly, HOWEVER, my heir was also killed instantly !!??

I was so shock how on earth can a group of stationary peasant kill my "4 hit points" faction heir in one go ?? Does anyone know how can that happened? [something relate to charging mechanic perhaps] Or i was simply extremely bad luck?? [but hey, how can a peasant "luckily" kill a 4 hit point general in one go??] :inquisitive:

I don't know about peasants in LTC, but generally there is a chance a horse unit dies if impacting the enemy on a charge. Same with fresh bodyguards dying on impact charge.

So do you mean horse unit will have certain chance to kill itself during the charge impact, regardless of unit strength, hit points etc?? [ like hitting onto stakes?? ]

If so perhaps the best way to keep the king or heir safe is not committing in any combat but routers! :laugh4:

Pretty much.
Though routers aren't that harmless either. At times they do hit back (even when not in fight to death mode) but then hitpoints apply.

yep, its quite common for cav to lose one or two men when chasing routers, or for the heavy cav to sustain a loss or two when riding down inferior infantry, and whats wrong with that? no unit shouls be able to take on another with total impunity, even the lowliset peasant may avoid being ridden down and manage to put a stick between the horses legs, toppling a hapless king to a har dlanding and broken neck.

I agree its as it should be. War is a dangerous thing. A poorly weilded pitch fork is still pointy! A stray arrow etc should have a small chance of turning a battle

Yea, actually i agree with that which bring extra realism to the game. :yes:

I tried to replay the battle with my heir charge down the peasants and in 10 battles my cavalry didnt lost a single man. All i can bemoan will be bad luck during the battle i describe before. :shame:

Indeed luck should be an important element. It's the price of risking your general in charges rather than hiding him safely at the back I'm afraid. After all, the battle of Hastings pretty much swung on a lucky arrow killing the general at a crucial moment.

Personally I think it's a little odd that generals get extra hitpoints at all, I think it makes generals a little overpowered as combat units; committing your general to the fight should be an act of desperation.

I can't remember losing a general upon impact, but there's a whole lot of things I have forgotten and more I wish that I had. I'd guess that it is only a 1 percent chance, if that. Does the game have any probabilities at less than 1 percent?

Ive lost my general on impact, there was only 1 unit of merc spears left and I figured that since the rest of the army routed hed be ok.. he wasnt.

Had you already had your general fighting in that battle? If so, maybe he only had one hitpoint left.

I believe he was most likely engaged in the battle at some point pre-charge. Will this actually remove a hp from the stats? Even if your officer hasnt had a loss to his unit yet? I usually save my officer unless absolutely necessary or for routers etc. It does make sense I guess, I do remember the other TW titles and youd lose soldiers occasionally as they chased routers down, cant always prevent courage from occurring at the unit level.


Its a different bone to pick, but Its much better system to have your officer regenerate his bodyguard after a battle. In MTW1 Id sometimes have to save old bodyguard units just so that my generals wouldnt degenerate down to 1 knight on a horse. It was time consuming, not always possible and occasionally cost me a battle or 2 since it became a nuisance once the bodyguard was under 10 men and to precious to chance a loss of even a single knight.

i'd say something of both. To lose 90% of the general unit + general himself on a charge on peasants just due to dumb luck seems unlikely, at least 4 me. if it happened to me, :shocked2:i'd think the game loaded a battle with a unit of "Super Peasants," bricked-bodied or even worse the game placed an invisble row of stakes just by the side the peasants were standing (the latter is highly unlikely but the thought of it just made me LOL quite a bit.)
It being a mod, makes it far more likely, me thinks. The 'extremely bad' part about it is it happened to you, and your heir... Anyway, having the save file 'tleast made it managable. Cheers!:medievalcheers:
