Freedom? Is this the future of allowing the government to regualte everything? With nationalized healthcare and more and more government control on our personal lives, what will the government measure next and decide to "reeducate" on? I'm sure there are going to be plenty here that will say this is a great idea, but can you not see the direction this can go?:wall:
Re: Does anyone find this scary?
The people running sumo schools are going to be very upset.
Re: Does anyone find this scary?
Hmm. I'm going to give this a year and a half max before this thing gets erased from the legislative books. Ridiculous law, on top of the fact that it isn't likely to work. Come on Japan, you going to have ANOTHER PM resign in only the span of 3 years?

I never saw a fat soldier in STW.

Article: "and having a weight-related ailment will be given dieting guidance if after three months they do not lose weight. If necessary, those people will be steered toward further re-education after six more months."
It took em 60 years but looks like there starting to shake off that nasty western influence on personal identity :wiseguy:

Eh, I don't have a problem with the measuring and giving diet tips to people who have weight related ailments.

That's just scare mongering by the newspaper. They probably hand them a sheet of diet information and tell them to read it.
The monetary penalties are a different matter...I guess it would depend on how severe they were.

Well okay, there isnt a direct quote but the Times story cites "Under a national law" (in reference to the the reeducation bit). I'll concede on it, there isnt a direct quote from a Japanese official or a law that has that language so you are most likely correct.
The money thing is troubling as well, but reeducation used in reference to a national law raised my brow.

I just want to know what Devastatin' Dave was doing reading the NY Times. After all, I hear they hate freedom ...

Even if the payment should be symbolic, it's still nasty. If you're a few centimeters to thick, it's none of the goverment's buisness.
Re: Does anyone find this scary?
Local companies and governments will relay costs onto the consumer and taxpayer, respectively.

You people sure do like your Doritos stashes. Don't you?
Re: Does anyone find this scary?
You can take my doritos from my cold, dead, orange hands.

Re: Does anyone find this scary?
Maybe they could work out a "Cap and Trade" deal with another socialized medicine country, so that 44-inch waistline Hans of Berlin, for example, could team with 22-inch waistline Abdul of Darfur?

Odd. Didn't think Japan had a weight problem?
