Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
I'm currently playing a Sweboz campaign, and I gotta say, so far I'm really loving it. Normally I don't like woods battles, so I was wary of playing any of te barbarian factions, but it really hasn't been that bad. I'm really loving the different playstyle of well supplied, foraging, raiding parties. And the "Outlaw" or Wolves" shock infantry that can sometimes be found as mercenaries are one of my new favorite units. I still haven't gotten a Triumph yet, but my Generals are for the most part progessing nicely.
I was just wondering, which barbarian faction do you like best, and why? Casse? Sweboz? Aedui? Arverni? Other?
Thanks :)

„Dear sir, as a representative of the United Council of Tarabostes in Getia, I have to inform you that we are not in any way to be considered barbarians, outside of the Greek understanding of this word. Thank you for your understanding.
Signed Ayce,
Vice-mato of the Akidava territory,
Spokesman of the UCTG.”
And yes, the Getai rule. ~D

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
I gotta go with Getai, as well. They have a wonderful roster with some cool units. Plus, as a horsearcher guy, I love the fact that they get access to native horse archers, as well as Scythian horsearchers. They have a great starting position, as well.

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
IF the Lusos are to be considered ''Barbarians'' in that question,
LUSOTANNAN FTW!
But if they aren't included
Sweboz ALL the way

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
Well, I finally got a level 5 barracks up in my Sweboz capitol, and I must say I'm a little disappointed in unit variety. While it's entirely possible to win battles with the units available, they don't have very much variety at all, or so it seems. I will soon start going for level 5 MICs and hopefully they will add some flavor to the unit selection. A brief look at recruitment viewer seems to show both Cassee and Aedui having far more types of units. I may try one of them if I finish or shelve this Sweboz campaign.

I may be wrong but IIRC doesn't the germanic unit variety mostly come from other other german settlements around the place?

That's correct. Nearly every homeland province has its unique units. That makes the early Germanic army much more "colorfull" (and better!) than the early Celtic armies. The difference is that the Sweboz do not develop so much throughout the game, what makes the Aedui and Arverni much more powerfull in the later game.

Also keep in mind that the swêboz needs a reform before you are able to build their late units, ie. heavy infantry and cavalry thegns, so wait for it before building the last MIC unless you want the speutogardoz which are the only unit of the three which becomes available from that level MIC before the reforms happen.
EDIT: Oh and sorry it seems I cannot make a post without editing it but there was a topic here and on that I enjoy the swêboz very much each time I play with them; the atmosphere is rich and befitting of the faction, at least I buy it, and it is one of the few factions with which I am actually fond of fighting in the woods; the great forests of germania are beautiful in EB ( any remember those magic-kingdom giant trees from vanilla rome ? ), and the array of units to amass through a gathering of the tribes, as described in above posts and the possibility for semi-historical migration/conquest with the fairly detailed theories which exist on germanic expansion of that time holds in it a great level of immersion for me. But I may have a geographical/national inclination to the faction.

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
I have been recruiting solely from my capitol. I'll try upgrading the barracks in other settlements now, thanks. I do have another question though.
The level 5 barracks description says it allows training of germanic heavy infantry and germanic heavy cavalry, but they do not show up in the recruitment panel. Anyone have any ideas why?
Thanks again.
edit: i bet it's because I haven't gone through the reform, nevermind. sorry.

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
Either the Auedi on the days that I feel like I want to slaughter thy neighbors immediately, or the Sweboz where you of coarse have lots of flexibility when it comes to fighting with other factions, although whenever I play the Sweboz my armies tend to become Belage Spearmen backed up by Kludacorii and Germanic Generals.

I've been doing pretty good with 4-5 units of Celtic Archers (even though they are pretty terrible, they are still archers) 2-3 FMs, 4-5 Club Infantry that I use to flank and attack with javelins, and the line being germanic spearmen, soon to be replaced with pikemen, but then again, I haven't hit the reform yet, and most of my cities have very low level barracks so v0v

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
the casse are the best IMHO. their only downfall is the lack of heavy cavalry. but mercs can fill that up.
When i play as the casse i migrate to Northern Ireland, and expand from there, making raids on the east coast of Britain and northern coast of Gaul. The Goillic swordsmen are amazing, and so are the axemen from wales. Plus the naked spearmen of doom are excellent for holding down a flank, or spearheading an assault. the Roman checkerboard formation works so well with the Casse, its ridiculous. but you can really just line up and charge with em if you want to. I havent gotten very far with them though, so i dont know what kinds of cavalry they have access to. (ive always fancied taking the Casse through the deserts of arabia to see just how well they'd stack up against more disciplined adversaries.
in any case, if you need someone to take walls theres no better than welsh axemen.
ive currently got my hands full with a Spartan campaign. then ill be able to get a wicked AAR for my "Rise of the Gaels" campaign

What I do is get as much of the Amber Rout as possible going down to Carrodonum, and them I get a German army reinforced by tecitos to seize Vindellaclepidos (Which can train Kluddacorri and later Lucepos) and after Vindellaclepidos is secure I get as many tecitos and sundry German units together and plough into Belagia, which can be a very tough fight if the Auedi are around. But after you take Bratosporios you need to ensure that it has a Heavenly Pillar to Tiwaz or the Celtic equivalent Lugh if the Auedi built it, then when you have your Heavenly Pillars of Tiwaz you can proceed to train 4 expiriance (1 silver chevron) troops which are true killers, and allot better than what the Germans have. Oh and don't use Celtic or German archers, they're useless, use Celtic slingers trained at places that have the Heavenly Pillars of Tiwaz and a field of games, you can get Celtic Slingers who do 6 missile damage outright plus the armor piercing value, in short they are rock slinging wonders when trained in the right spots.
As for German reforms I have won all both of my German games before they came so I don't know later Germanic units perform in combat.

I know I am not the only EB member responsible for the great stuff in EB concerning the Sweboz and Germanic tribes, but it is really awesome to see such nice comments made by you guys- knowing that our work is appreciated goes a long way ~:thumb:

I can't really say enough how much I have been enjoying this mod. I liked vanilla RTW, but this is better in every way. Again, thank you. :beam:

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
Have to say I love the Getai unit selection, but the Sweboz would probably be my favourite barbarian faction. They are the only one with whom I have actually finished a campaign.
-
Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
Another Casse fan here, mostly because of my obsession with ancient Britain. I also enjoy the fact that you can largely take your time with expansion, due to their island start, and I like watching the other factions develop without my proximity influencing them. Not to mention they get the Kluddargos (which can all but destroy planets), Calawre, (one of my favorite units in EB, appearance-wise), and those chariots and their godly aptitude at causing mass routs.

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
Getai or one of the Gauls.
Getai get the nasty ass, phalanx eating Drapani & Rhomphiaphori, get to dabble in horse archery and even have some good heavy spears. Also get the good Thracian units.
Arverni & Aedui get lots of guys with big awesome swords that you can just throw around.

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
My choice has to be: Sweeboz
I just finished (last night) 1.1 with BI campaign, and have to admit it was a great one. I didn't make it to BC to see the reforms (finished it in BC), but to be honest i didn't really need them. I play on VH/H with huge units option. Sweeboz have a good if pricey unit roster (swords men and light cav.) and that made for a good balanced play (money was always an issue until the last phase of the campaign). Once i took over Alpine region i have to admit it made no sense in recruiting Sweeboz units, because native ones offer a great deal for the money (alpine swords, phalanx, slinger and Gallic light cav.). I never used naked Celts opting to have one or two units of similar German unit.
I have played Getai with 0.8 version and found them a very powerful and easy faction. Finished that campaign in no time at all. So they have to be my second choice.
Maybe in the future i will try one of the Celtic factions, but for some reason they don't appeal to me as much as their Eastern neighbors do.
Just started up Bactria campaign, want to visit India, plus i think that subliminal advertising finally won me over (you know the one, Catapharact duel picture during load screen time).

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
Off-topic:
( Noting a few active swêboz campaigns here, and a few who have experience with such I would like to seize the moment and kindly ask if any of you have had the same issues I had with the swêboz reforms, here is a link to the original thread:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showt...=sweboz+reform
Sorry for the resurrection, but I am quite curious as to whether any of these triggers are broken.
I can upload a saved game if any would be interested. )
Blitzkrieg, I actually withheld much praise I must admit, I thought you team-members were growing tired of it and if going to hard at it I wouldn´t like to be confused for one of those fish who doesn´t know it is swimming in water ( to use a metaphor posted by cmaq in reference to nationalistic preferences ), but on that notion I have to thank you for the exciting use of proto-germanic, which I reckon you had a lot to do with, and in which, to my surprise, much is instantly recognizable when compared to even contemporary danish. I´m studying to be a historian ( a mere student, have a lot of years to go ) and cannot deny that the nordic languages of old ( and all languages, to be fair ) holds my interest although I have rarely ventured further back than what we call germanic iron-age ( especially though the 18th century where scandinavian languages changed rapidly into their modern form which of course are not the least more static ); with the exception of having touched briefly upon how deity names have evolved from the germanic bronze-age. Again thank you for this insight into an early setting until my studies leave me time to pursue the same.

Re: Favorite "Barbarian" Faction?
Never tried Sweboz yet, but so far my favourite barbarians are the Lusotannans, they have a lot of character and I just love their style of fighting. I guess cos I thought that throwing javelins as a a main weapon was pretty useless, based on my previous experience in the Greek world, but I soon changed my mind with the Lusos! Plus your entire army, including the heavy infantry can hide in most terrain, even long grass, so you can literally ambush entire armies on the open plain. It's great!
The only downside is the usual barbarian problem with cultural public order in captured large and huge cities and the fact you cant build "proper" roads so it takes forever for your factional troops to get anywhere. ie, its over a year from one end of Iberia to the other.
Maybe I'll try the Sweboz next as I havent spent much time in that part of the map yet.
