Noob Question about 3D Max 9

Okay, I'm now the new owner of 3D Max, and, well, I've lost my model. I'm currrently making a sword, just for my first dedcent model, and well, I've lost it on the top right view. is ther any way I can snap this to default.

Also, I'm having problems with the sword point. Whenever I move the vertex where I want it to on one axis, All other axi go completely out the window. All I need to do is move the vertex in the x and y axes, but the z axis always wants toget involved as well, so my sword en's up looking like the bastard lovechild of Michael Winner and Sarah Jessica Parker (ie, Ugly.) Errr, help?
