Campagin Fog Of War

Hi all,

Currently playing a Macedonian campaign on BI 1.1 and loving it!

Anyhow been reading some threads on BI naval invasions and its got me excited about future invasions from the AI on my campaign (currently around 250 BC). However it seems from all the screen shots of the campaign map that have been posted in that all have had there campaign fog of war removed to allow full view of the world map.

Is this current/frequent practice among EB players here?

If so do peeps recommend it? It would cancel out the use or need for spies and the diplomatic effort to gain map information....

Or is it something you can switch on and off when you feel like just having a noisy at how the AI is doing?

Open your console while playing a game with the "~" button right under Esc. Type "Toggle_fow" without the quotes.

Type that again to disable it.

This lets you turn Fog of War on and off. Usually, a common practice here is to turn off FoW every 5 years to check up on other kingdoms, and then turn it back on.

Yeah, naval invasions is a ery nice BI feature, though sometimes it gets annoying. You see, most of the times (in the beggining, that is), they send 2-3 units over to a hostile territory and incite unneeded wars. This can, of course, be fixed with FD:yes: As for turning off fow to take the screenshots, isn't that natural? I mean, the reason of taking the pic is to show AI expansion, right?

I certainly don't think it's a current practise, though I assume it must be a frequent one. I, for one, play with fow off all the time, because I'm a relatively new BI user, as well as a VC one, so I want to see every AI move. Also, I like to interfere with other factions, preventin me from growing too strong. This can be done either with FD, or regular diplomact and some show of power from your armies. Divide and conquer, as they say!

I do recommend it, if you are curious about AI expansion. You can do ths every 10 or so years. but it certainly doesn't cancel out the usage of spies and diplomats. I use them quite excessivey, though I have fow turned off all the time.

I may just toggle this fog of war off for a few turns to see how the rest of Europe is doing...

Just love seeing other peeps campaigns and seeing the huge ancient superpowers grow. Seeing how big they get fighting them for the required victory condition territory will be fun :2thumbsup:

I have toggled_fow all the time. I don't like the RTW FOW system where, for example, I playing KH won't know of the fact that the Romans had burned down Syracusae or Antiochia had been fallen to the Armenians or an Epeirote army had been crushed near Pella without having dozends of spies running around on the map. Toggling FOW isn't perfect either because there are other things of which my faction shouldn't have notice of, but that's the all-or-nothing of RTW.

Lately, I've been losing interest in playing EB like this. I know, crazy right? It seems to get too easy too fast. The fact that I played with 'fow' off at all times was partly to blame since I always knew when an enemy army was close enough to attack me and I could always respond accordingly. Part of real war is never knowing who might hit you or when unless you are well prepared for it. If you want a more... satisfying... campaign, I would recommend playing with 'fow' on at all times and I mean never turn it off. In order for you to know what's going on with the rest of the world you will, quite literally, need an army of spies and diplomats at your disposal. There is alot more micro-managing going on if you play like this but it makes for a more challenging campaign. It's also more realistic since I doubt Lusotannan ever had trade agreements with Saka Rauka or that Sab'yn ever knew what was going on in the British Isles from 272 BC to 172 BC. It definitely wasn't uncommon to feel impassively secluded from the rest of the world during these times. In my opinion, if you want an awesome, more satisfying, and far more challenging EB campaign, just remember less is more and ignorance is bliss.



P.S. Of course, you could always pretend that your faction possessed the technology to build spy satellites 2200 years before they were invented. How else could you know where everyone else is at all times?
