thats what light cavalry is for, if they're too busy elsewhere, let them be. At least that bunch won't be fighting for a while, and wud be tired when they come back.

My mistake is that I sometimes am bored of micro-managing my battles (playing as Makedonia),so I mostly end up with many unecessary casualties. It can even up with me abandoning campaigns, due to the fact that shipping troops over to Hellas and back aain costs too much precious money and time, the latter being the most important factor IMO, especially if you take your enemy in surprise.

My biggest mistake is forgetting that elite troops are still killable, if your super powerful troops on the flank route you take a damn lot of casualties.

Well when my kingdom transfer to an empire. I very often forgett to dispand mercs and even forgett to move armies some times. Especially Invading a large kingdom when I have to have reinforcment. Annother misstake I do too often is to engage al my units. And when one or two of them have trouble. I have no left to help them.

Especially with factions that can retrain obsolete troops with reforms, I get all stingy and just keep retraining the obsolete troops so I don't have to spend money on new, expensive elite units.
I hate spending money.

in great battles i overload my RAM!!!
by scolling near around, using pause to look at situations and so on...
this is AARRRRGGGHHH!!! especially when the battle is "chuck norris"ed and i hunt the remains :shame:

My worst mistakes must be to rely on merceneries as I am mad about blitzing...
so they leave no money for improving my cities....
and I think to use heavy cavalry too much also they are perfect but tires very quickly and I still chase light cavalry with them :shame:

I often forget to do something with young and perspective generals and notice them only after notification about some nasty vice. The larger my kingdom is, the more often it happens.

most common one is unavoidable:
attacking a celtic town (eleutheroi in particular). their naked stoners are heck. luckily i've invented new tactics, so i can lower casualties from an average of 24% to an average of 7%...
@Andronikos: If I may: you can use the one that lists you're cities, and the family tree, in combinaton. that way, you can spread them out, and give them jobs. works perfectly in AS and romani campaigns; everybody had something to do, and every city got governed. just me :2cents:

Sometimes I put my army to wrong locations on battlefield and get sandwitched between the enemy and its reinforcements. It's only avoidable if I keep everyone in the center, which is usually not a good position.
It sucks when you can have to guess where enemy reinforcements will come from.. :furious3:

Usually you can tell where reinforcements come from in the campaign map.
my most common mistake is that I over-focus on one faction that I leave other areas open for attack by surrounding factions.

Usually I make only one army that goes around attacking enemy settlements and then leaving small garrisons behind. It works pretty well, until I realize that its time to retrain, which means that I have to march all the way back home because I can't reinforce them from my new settlements (as Makedonia my basic line infantry unit is Pezhetaroi, and I only have 2 cities built up enough to retrain them). Invariably the enemy attacks while my army is away, and then it costs me a lot of money in mercenaries to defend what I took. It causes me a lot of problems, and even though I know that I do it, I can never seem to correct it.

I'll often forget to build something in one town and then only realize decades later that the town hasn't been doing anything. Not a big error, but probably my most common.

I LOVE cavalry. The heavier the better. If at all possible I will try to have at least 2 units of cavalry in any army I have. the successful charge into the rear of an engaged enemy is just too devastating not to attempt it whenever I can. My most common mistakes usually involve the use of the cavalry though.
I usually either:
commit to charge too soon
stay too long in melee after a charge
don't give the cavalry enough time to lower lances before charge
Plenty of my battles are won or lost based on the cavalry charge.

When I got a bit of cash in my pocket, I start building up armies just because I like building up armies. Then they usually just stand around and fight rebels or something likely because it would take ages to march them to the enemy so when I have finished raising such an army I have to disband it so I don't go into debt.
I just like raising armies with all those bright and shiny soldiers in their cool uniforms and on their horsies. At least that way I never get so filthily rich that the campaign begins to bore me because of an infinite treasury.

i tend to 'cheat' in river battles by making a half circle around the bridge head with my phalangitai...you know what happens... my general bodyguard unit once got 1500+ kills (half their army) simply by chasing after the whole routing lot back across the bridge....

my favorite battle ever in EB was when i was way far into a Seleukid campaign, and had an army of their elite spearmen, supported by cretan archers and cataphract elephants. i was fighting a 4000 man army of epirotes, and it was at a river crossing. i made one half circle of elite spearmen at the top ford, and a second one at the bottom ford, but left a big gap for my elephants to charge once they got packed up. it was pure, undiluted slaughter. so fun.

My biggest and most often mistake has to be assuming that my enemies will meet my
army in regular battle with no complaints. My army usually consists of several elites and often outnumbers my opponents therefore my enemies never engage me head on and just send their whole army into a forest or up a mountain where my phalanxes will never get them
Battles last forever and just become a pain
My phalanxes never get a chance to fight :shame:
Most of my kills come from archers (as Makedonia THATS saying something)

Happens in just about any campaign I play:
I take too much time consolidating freshly conquered territories and give victory conditions little or no priority so once I do advance toward the "required" cities, many of them have been turned into huge cities by the AI faction holding them, thus giving me an eternal culture penalty.
In my last KH campaign, I first took the Balkan peninsule - so far so good, wiped out Makedonia and Epeiros (in EB1.0 it was possible to push them into Italy by quickly taking Ambrakia and Epidamnos right after terminating the Makedonians in Pella and then declaring a ceasefire/trade rights because they still had their MIC in Taras, so they served well in preparing greek culture cities in the west while I got busy in the east driving AS, Pontos and Ptolemaioi out of Mikra Asia but now Epeiros gets driven out of Italy in the first few rounds of any game and expands to the north where the cities are of little or no use to KH because you don't get proper units out of them and they offer little or no trade... Saw a full stack of Epeiros sitting around in Vindobona recently.
Also, expansion into not required areas tends to overstretch supply lines and build up impossible army upkeep because at some point for every army on the front one or two travelling armies are needed so I can cycle through -army fighting, -army on the way home to be retrained, and -army on the way to the front to relieve the current fighting army.
The only way to speed up the process is sea superiority - and that costs even more... Getting MICs of sufficient level to retrain near the front (playing KH expanded to the east) takes years even when swimming in cash as I usually need at least lvl 3 armies to survive against factions like AS or Sauromatae... So it's getting the conquered city out of rebellion-mode with temples, sewers, etc, plus 27 turns. (lvl 2 government(6) plus 3+6+12 for barracks iirc)
But somehow I always keep doing just that, overstretching supply lines and then recruiting large numbers of mercenaries to hold the line. Good for the generals though - if I manage to avoid having them turn into warmongers (anyone know what precisely triggers that trait? In more detail than "attacking a lot", I mean?) they turn out to have masses of influence and pick up admin very fast once I put them in a city with an academy. Or they turn into decadent heroes.
Oh and I always try to get my fresh FM blooded before I send them to the agoge - so I often end up getting to Sparte just about one season too late.

I tend to have a problem of overcommitting to a weak spot in an enemy's line, allowing the strong spots in their line to push through my thin spots and do a lot of damage. I don't do this everytime, and I find the best way to avoid it is to focus on one side of their line or the other instead of going for weak spots in the middle.

Yep, same here. Although I don't tend to make that as a mistake, it's more like I lose track of all the troops on the battlefield, they chase by default and by the time I notice them, they've already gone too far. -M

Lol I just did that costed me a whole high quality Roman army in a very important palce in a very important battle against Epirus.
The battle was alomost over, they were all on the run chased by my men and then...dataaa they turned back and sluaghtered my spreaded men.
