Now, I do understand why the word nigger should not be used, however, I dont think anyone can accuse me of being intolerant towards black people in the above example...

Words in itself are not hateful or diminishing, it's the context where the words are used that makes them what they are, no?

I really did not see a reason for this official warning. Some mod/admin care to elaborate?

so, an argument like "I have never understood people screaming sieg heil" would get an infraction, as the term "sieg heil " would be against the rules...

Again, isn't the context the whole point, not the actual word?

Context may be more applicable to borderline and words with different nuances in meaning, but for such particular words which are known to be offensive to groups of people, this does not apply.

You could have made the point using "insert slur/expletive here" or somesuch rather than use the offensive word.

Changing every post you made on the ORG to "Too much censorship on these boards" does not exactly help your cause.

I do not believe that "sieg heil" would result in an infraction, as I cannot imagine it being used in a context in which those words themselves would be offensive. I can imagine a post where they are used and the entire content of the post is offense and worthy of an infraction, but that would be due to the whole post, not those specific words.

Context is only one factor. The Org Rules forbid the use of words that are generally considered offensive. This includes all cursing and racial epithets. This is because those words are not generally necessary for any post and serve only to elevate the level of hostility amongst the patrons of the forum. Suppressing them is a minor cost to keep the Org a relatively peaceful place.

If you are in doubt as to whether a specific word or phrase will violate the Rules, PM the Moderator who is in charge of the forum you want to post it in. The Moderator will let you know whether it is acceptable to use that word or phrase. If you feel like context matters, then explain it in your PM and it will be taken into consideration.

nvm, too much censorship on these boards, so I'm out.

You can't use a racist slur and not expect to have some sort of punishment.

I can understand what you are trying to say, but you have to remember that words of that nature have attached to them some very powerful emotions. They invoke images and memories of oppression and even if not directed at someone could potentially start a flame war over their casual usage. IMHO the infraction justified, we normally have a very low tolerance for slurs of any kind.

If you truly wish to leave the forums over this infraction then that is entirely up to you and we cannot stop you or force you to read the boards. I wish you all the best in your search for a new abode online, and hope you have fun.

There is hardly too much censorship on this fourm, IMO it is quite leniant.

Well, it's not just one thread.

1. 3 weeks ago I got a warning for using the acronym "FFS"...

2. a couple of days ago a mod contacted me about the thread "casual sex", and eventough I had not broken any forum rules in the thread I was told to "keep it down". I replied to this mod, 3 times, but he did not bother writing back.

3. I get a warning for using a "bad" word in a "good" context. I have already explaiend my view of that though, but I will again say that it is stupid to ban words, not contexts.



These 3 factors together, no. 2 and 3 in particular, makes me rather sure there are others boards more suited to my personality and writing style.

Don't get me wrong through, there are some very good mods around (like Lemur), whenever he has PMed me during the years I must say I've found him to be both right and to the point.

But there are other mods I am less impressed with. Specially in the WAY they deal with things. I don't mind being told to change something if it's done in a friendly or reasoning way. It's when I start to get ordered around that I feel it's time to leave.

If you have an issue with one certain moderator, I think it's best if you try to sort it out with that moderator through pm.

In case that doesn't work out, you can always appeal against the infraction/explain your concerns by pm'ing TosaInu.

I'd suggest you try out those possibilities before making drastic decisions.

But of course, it's your call and if you feel that leaving is the only available option, then so be it.

Not that i'm trying to defend anyone here, but surely the legendary Bartix thread violates the forum rules, as it is just 6 pages of trolls trolling trolls for trolling the mentally defective? Highly entertaining trolls, but trolls nonetheless. Trolls who targeted someone who was (at the time anyway) quite clearly of a mental status whereby the replies served only to further aggravate them.

Once again, not defending anyone here, i can completely understand that people may be offended by that word, but at the same, you've got Bartix stickied for everyone to read for 3 years in the EB subforum...

It is true he responded with 3 PM's - the first 10 minutes after my PM, the second 4 minutes later, the third 6 minutes after that (#2 and #3 listed as p.s.'s, advising me of the legal age of consent in Austria), and I took his questions as being rhetorical, that is, expressions of his opinion, not actual inquiries - so I did not respond. Particularly, as it seemed he had honoured my request to "tone it down" in his subsequent posts. 'Done deal', I thought; a word-to-the-wise given and received.

Separately, the first infraction Kadagar_AV cites was for two instances of f-bomb releases, not one.

In closing, I note that Kadagar_AV has edited most content he previously provided in the backroom for the past couple of weeks, substituting the sentence " too much censorship on these boards"; in some cases, that original content has been restored, so that the threads make sense to the reader, and out of respect for the other posters/contributors to the threads - that their contributions also still make sense.

I usually try to stay out of member/mod fights. I appreciate the .org precisely for its well moderated forums. It makes for the difference between YouTubesque exchanges of obscenities and insults and this pleasant place. It is a lot of hard work, done by volunteers who have to balance rules, the flow of conversation, and dozens of pompous egos.

Maybe the mods, in this case or others, made a regretable decision, maybe not. Either way, must there be too much drama over it?

A few warnings won't hurt you, many newcomers to the backroom get a couple before they figure out the boundaries. A few of the more unsavory amongst us have been getting them for years, and still manage to stick around - with brief periods of staff enforced R&R, of course. ~;)

Although I must say that if the current moderation seems that outrageously unfair, this may not be the place for you. Kukri and BQ have been much more even handed than previous mods - despite my own thread in this subforum. :laugh4:

Anyway, good luck to you... and nice touch changing every post you ever made in the backroom. It had to take quite a bit of time. Now that's drama, and I love it! :drama1:

I second that. I got my first ever infraction because I quoted from the Bartix thread. I presumed since it was a non-deleted post it would be OK, especially since I blanked out all letters except the first in each swear word.

Pity the thread got derailed so, made a nice break from the usual abortion, election, guns, politics that makes the regular cycle.
