Anyone for Diplomacy?
http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/reg...s/colordip.gif
I don't know how many of you - if any - are familiar with Dip. but its' an excellent game and I'd be happy to GM a game if anyone is interested.
Please post below if you'd like to play. If you have no Dip experience then you will DEFINITELY need to read up on the rules
BEWARE!
Diplomacy games are notoriously long-winded and often take several months to complete. While I am happy to GM for n00bs, there is nothing more frustrating than people who decide to drop out during a game - it is very difficult to find willing replacements and can really ruin the dynamics of what is a delicately balanced game system to begin with :laugh4:. Therefore, please only sign up if you are committed to participating no matter what; and you are prepared to acquaint yourselves with the rules.
All that aside - if you haven't played Dip before, I can only say that it is very different to most other games you will be used to, and it is TEH BESTEST FUN.:2thumbsup:

We need 7 players to sign up. feel free to ask questions about how the game works once you've had a look at those links. B

I guess this thread can be binned if we don't get 7 sign-ups - as per normal mafia set up. No worries - there are plenty of places to play Dip online. :)
and if we use phpdip - then I can play too! yay!

Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
Never played it, but I think I might take a chance (though I must know the time deadlines and such) since on many weekends I will not be able to post since, I study away from home and on the weekends I have no chance of going to a computer.
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
i'll be preety deaicated for the foreseeable future but i've never played before, i'll read rules when i have more time
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
You can use this. We used that for quite a few games a few months back.
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
Hi Jolt & Ares - thanks for showing interest.
No problem about the weekend thing. Typically, Dip games can run as slowly as one 'turn' a week, as there is plenty of private diplomacy to be conducted via PM/email between players.
Each game year is split into 5 separate phases:
Spring > Move Orders
Summer > Retreats (if necessary)
Fall > Move Orders
Autumn > Retreats (if necessary)
Winter > Adjustments
Normally online games take two weeks to complete this cycle of phases.
Tues. - Spring Orders
24 hours later Summer Retreat orders.
the following Tues - Fall orders
24 hours later - Autumn retreat and then another 24 hours until Winter adjustments are due.
Games can run quicker - sometimes players can become bored with the slow pace initially - but sooner or later you really need that time to talk to everyone!
Anyway - as i said in the first post - it's a great game, but really not for everyone. Have a good look at the rules before signing up.

Hi shlin, we haven't met, but i just read atpg's Golden rule thread today :laugh4: so i feel like i know you a bit already :beam:
I haven't seen that php app before - I might give that a whirl myself. I usually use realpolitik
http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/
to adjudicate games. It is also an invaluable tool as a player, so you can play out moves ahead and practice potentially strategies.

Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
This looks really cool, boudica, and it's certainly a game I'd be interested in. However, I cannot be sure that I will have the time to dedicate to it, as I am often randomly afflicted with bouts of real life from time to time. :clown: I will therefore have to regretfully decline my full joining of the game.
So, I will say this: you can put me down as an "understudy" of sorts- if you can't get a seventh player, or someone drops out midway through the game, I will be happy to fill that spot for you. Until then, however, I will yield to anyone who has the time to pay full attention to the game.

Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
I kinda get it but im still confused. Is this like risk?
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
Thanks for the offer of support Chaotix. And Beefy: Initially it does kind of look like Risk... but the basic premise is very different. There is no element of chance involved when resolving conflict.
Opposing armies cancel out each others strengths and because units are so limited (only Russia begins with 4 - rather than 3 units on the map) it is essential for players to cooperate with each other to achieve their objectives.
Most games do not end in solo wins. Stalemate lines exist on the board which often make it possible for determined - and united - opposition to prevent victory - so many games end as a partial victory for an alliance.

Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
In then:2thumbsup:. Looks promising
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
I'd love to play again, especially if we use phpdiplomacy.
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
I would play if there are replacement people. Otherwise I can't promise I'll stay active for months in a row.
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
I'm willing to be a replacement or temporary sub.
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
No worries Jolt. To be honest, I find myself signed up for quite enough mafia games atm :laugh4: - not to mention various other lives outside of 'the real' - so I'm in no hurry to start up a game of Dip. Thanks to shlin for the link to that php site though. I'll definitely be up for playing in a game at some point. If anyone sets up a game count me in and I guess if we get 7 definites on this thread then I'll set up a private game for us.:2thumbsup:

Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
looks a tad like lux deluxe, still a tad confused, but I'm definitely IN
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
a found a diplomacy game demo, if it works ill tell u and boudica could perhaps put it in the OP, nothing like understanding a game more than playing it before starting, i think....
edit: it doesn't seem to work :(
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
Total innage, I would prefer to use phpdiplomacy though, as I am most familiar with it.
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
I like what I see, love to play as Imperial Germany or Russia though :2thumbsup:
Let me finish reading up on it a bit, and then I am totally in. Wish someone had suggested this sooner, this should be fun! And don;t worry about activity for me - I am omnipresent on these boards:wink:
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
If the turn times are usually a few days or over i can pretty much guarentee i will be active...
IN!
im pretty sure i should be here for months or however long the game takes, short of my internet dying or the olsen twins wanting me in bed with tem 24 hours a day...
Never done this type of game before, but i can usually pick things up fairly easily, if i do struggle ill just over compensate with enthusism
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
if we get to reserve countries id choose Italy please :beam:
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
In a GM controlled game you would usually post order of preferences for which power you play, but on phpdip it picks randomly.
-
Re: Anyone for Diplomacy?
1. France
2. England
3. Russia
4. Germany
5. Turkey
6. Austria
7. Italy
In, since apprently there are a couple of people willing to replace me.
