Only seen one in 49 years. How's that?
I had to use Wikipedia to find out what it is, so yeah, only once also

Here over the sea(Norway), I've heard some tall tales about glasses flying around, but never seen any of it...
Except in demonstrations of course, where the police routinely gets bombarded with bottles and bricks.
Over here, it's a surface treatment for surfboards.
Heh. Tried out the sport when I first arrived here ('88). Got the hang of the technique, but quickly discovered I didn't have the natural talent other guys did for maintaining balance and orientation on a constantly shifting 'surface'. A strong swimmer, I nevertheless don't read waves well enough to excel.
So, I just quietly admire the fellas who do, and follow the progress of board design, as an amatuer.
On beer-glass "glassing": saw it happen once in a German gasthaus; nasty business.
Why would you need to be a good swimmer to play cricket? Admittedly, the surface does shift a bit, especially in very dry summers, and balance is always useful, but the only orientation you need is to face the ball at all times. Also, fibreglassing the board (or bat as we call it) is only legal if one is repairing it, or holding it together - using a fibreglass veneer to add additional oomph is illegal.
Also, be careful when facing fast bowlers, so you don't get wiped out or raked over by snappers. Although if you last long enough, you might get a touch of the noodles.
It happened up in my town last weekend i think, I hear about the odd incident of it happening now and again, think its just a handy weapon for violent drunks...
I've worked in the pub trade for more or less twelve years and have yet to witness a glassing, thank goodness. I have seen the resultant scars on just a single individual. I guess it depends on which area and which pub you frequent.
Never seen it, I think it's acutally more prevelant when chavs go on holiday; and you usually use a bottle. I did hear a story about a guy who bought to WKD's in Thailand, smashed them on the bartop and proceeded to batter two guys giving him lip.
Rofl.
When you're whacking the ball, don't the fins of the bat ('board' as we call it) get in the way of a good, strong swing?
Speaking of additional "oomph", some local fellas here are trying out going the other way: lighter, but strong materials like carbon-fibre and even (gasp!) cardboard.
they have a name for that? i've never seen it beyond shows and movies but i always thought the official terminology was "breaking a glass and stabbing a guy in the face with it." hmm
That's how Hollywood shows it. The incident I saw in Göppingen involved one of these

half-litre Weizen glasses, picked up palm-on-bottom by the assailant, the glass mouth smashed into the vic's face and forcefully twisted.
