Sustained peace possible through economics?

So I am currently playing a Romani campaign on VH/H with a modified money script, all the computer factions get 40,000 a turn every time they drop below 300,000. This has been really successful in getting the Aedui, Arverni, and Sweboz to expand (along with most of the other factions). The body of Europe has basically been conquered by the year 240 BC. I've taken Massalia, Tolosa, and Burdigalia (sp?) along the Mediterranean coast. I am at peace with the Arverni and have been since the beginning of the game, allied with the Sweboz, but at an endless war with the Aedui.

I'm thinking that to simulate an era of peace, maybe 20 years or so, I am going to basically make those three factions go broke by changing the money script for them in order to achieve this. I am hoping that it has the desired result ala they have no money then they have no soldiers. I will be sure to reset the money script before I attack again of course! I am interested if anyone has any other tricks/changes they have made in order to try and role play/simulate an era of peace.

Conquer the bastards and install type-4 allied governments with a client ruler. This represents conquering an area yet leaving it to run its own affairs and pay tribute and supply soldiers when asked, in return for their freedom, and of course they can't attack you because you're controlling them.

How's that for roleplayed peace? :beam:

Yes yes... conquer the bastards. Peace is for p.... um... yea... conquer the bastards.:yes:

I install lvl IV govs in all conquests for 1 generation before evaluating the city on a case by case roleplay basis for whether or not it upgrades and to what level... screw peace.:whip:

It's almost impossible to get peace when you want it in a Total War game. Depriving a faction of money will just make them throw a couple levies at you every turn instead of a whole stack.

When I roleplay peace, I'll just auto_win battles against the faction I'm "at peace" with using a faction of local easily retrained units. I'll also often use the move_character cheat to move armies away from my borders every turn, making them remarch the same march.

There really isn't any way of getting gaurenteed peace unless you live on an island in RTW.

And even then you can't be 100% sure that you will have a long peace. Especially when you use BI exe.

Cutting their money has definitely cut down on the number of armies I am seeing along my borders. Since I have my entire border secured with forts in narrow passes I've been able to just force diplomacy them to a ceasefire before they take my forts the last couple of turns. Granted they haven't been attacking me every turn since I cut off their money supply.

There's an interesting idea - create an island empire with the Balearics, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Crete, Rhodes and Cyprus. Actually, maybe not Sicily as you've got the land bridge to the Italian mainland. Could you afford a navy to keep your islands safe? Can you develop your economy enough to sail over to Britain? I suppose you'd want to be at peace with as many people as possible to have trading rights.

The land bridge between Sicily and Italy can easily be blocked by just placing a unit on the coast. The computer cannot attack you because they cannot reach the slot right next to your unit to attack it. If the computer couldn't actually attack you they may not break the peace I suppose.

move their army to british islands or ireland will help you a lot when maintaining peace.....:laugh4:

but for the sake of roleplaying, I got 3 full stack of phalavan army goes on vacation in Ireland on my Baktrian campaign..... That creates long, sustainable peace:laugh4:

I hadn't thought about that, but would be pretty hard in doing that for 3 factions when each has 4-8 full stacks prowling around.

I do not see the difficulty of maintaining peace; I had once secured a 12 year peace as a lkhmid in IBFD IJ 2, inspite of being surrounded by enemies (sassanids and romans). all you have to do is take advantage of their aggresiveness: gie them tribute, keep neutral, and ask them to attack each other. it worked for me. I broke the peace BTW.:laugh4:

Actually, they can attack you. What you are describing would work in M2TW, but "landbridges" that were worked into RTW work just like two tiles of adjacent land.

You can however move ships to block that landbridge between Sicily and Italy.

I my Romani campaign only Epeiros, Carthage, Sweboz and Makedon have been agressive.

The other faction are pacifists so far.

Bordering with and at peace with:

Aedui Empire (pretty much all of Gaul): for 80 years
Arverni, 1 province : for 50-40 years
Lusotann, half of Iberia : for 50-40 years
Getai, 4 provinces : for 40-30 years
KH, 1 province : for 10 years

Actually, you can't do that either. The tiles are diagonally touching, meaning there is actually no sea between them.
